Enjoy Close Access To The Herring Lakes, Lake Michigan, and 4 Nature Preserves
Our modern, well equipped home, half-way between Frankfort and Arcadia, overlooks Herring Creek. The area around the cottage is landscaped with native plants, a vegetable garden is available for the harvest of produce in season, and there is a bee hive on the edge of the property. Acreage on both sides of the creek is joined by a graceful arched footbridge. Across the creek from the house is an open area with picnic table and fire pit. The creek joins Upper Herring Lake and Lower Herring Lake, then flows out of Lower Herring Lake into Lake Michigan. Both Herring Lakes are noted fishing lakes, and the outlet of the creek into Lake Michigan is stunningly beautiful. Within 2 miles of the house we are blessed with four Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy nature preserves; the Arcadia Dunes, Green Point, Fruit Haven, and Upper Herring Lake preserves. Both Arcadia Dunes and Green Point have extensive Lake Michigan shoreline, and all have wonderful hiking, biking, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing trails. The town of Frankfort, 5 miles away, is a lively tourist destination, and the southern boundary of Sleeping Bear Dunes is just 12 miles to the north. The highly rated "Arcadia Bluffs" golf course is about 7 miles to the south, and we are 15 miles from the Crystal Mountain Ski Resort and golf course.
A large deck on the upper level overlooks Herring Creek. The deck is furnished with table, chairs, umbrella, and gas grill. Also on the upper level are a dining area, well equipped kitchen (dishwasher, coffee grinder/maker, Cuisinart, etc.), two bedrooms each with a full-sized bed, and a bathroom with whirlpool bath. Downstairs are a bedroom (full-sized bed) opening onto a small deck overlooking the creek, a common area, a bathroom, and a sunroom in which a single bed can be placed. The Sunroom contains a flat panel TV with DVR, an interesting movie selection, and other options for playing video files (no TV reception). We now have high speed internet.
There are many wonderful summer activities available in the area. Proximity to Herring Creek, the two Herring Lakes, Lake Michigan, and the nature preserves open unlimited opportunities for canoeing and kayaking, boating, swimming, fishing, hiking, biking, birding, and observing nature. We actually most enjoy our “off-season” time. The house is well insulated, with a gas furnace and efficient wood-burning stove. The fall colors are spectacular, and from mid-September to late November there are salmon spawning in the creek right in front of the house. Winter brings lots of snow, which means lots of snowshoeing and cross-country skiing on our 10 acres, or in the nearby nature preserves and Lake Michigan beaches. On request snowshoes or cross-country skis may be made available to guests. In spring Steelhead and other fish species spawn in the creek and woodland wildflowers, morel mushrooms, and migrating birds appear along the many beautiful nature preserve trails.

About Norman Bell
My wife and I are now retired and splitting our time between Chicago and Creekside Cottage.
Norman Bell purchased this House in 2006
Why Norman Bell chose Frankfort
We first visited the Herring Lakes area around 1990. We rented a cottage on Lower Herring Lake, fell in love with the area in general, and determined, by canoe, that the spot where Herring Creek flows into Lake Michigan is one of the most beautiful on earth. From that moment we knew we would find ways to spend more time in the area. In 1995 we purchased land on Herring Creek upstream from Lower Herring Lake where our family spent camping vacations. In 2006 the house across the creek became available and we purchased it and built a bridge joining the two properties. Now we have a wonderful retreat in the heart of the area we love.
What makes this House unique
Location, location, location. Two beautiful inland lakes, the Great Sweetwater Sea, and four amazing nature preserves all within a few minutes drive. A little farther, but in easy reach, are the Arcadia Bluffs golf course, Sleeping Bear Dunes, Interlochen Art Center, Crystal Mountain Ski Resort, the wine country of Leelanau County, and the lively towns of Frankfort and Traverse City.

Beautiful wildflower setting
This was our first stay and we very much enjoyed it. The house was very clean and well stocked. The property is private and beautifully landscaped with wildflowers. The walkout basement was a cool respite on hot evenings. We explored several nearby hiking trails, the Betsie Valley Trail, Frankfort and Sleeping Bear Dunes. We had a great time in your home!
Great location, beautiful convenient house with all the facilities.
Great place to stay. We are looking forward to come back again.
Another Wonderful week at Creekside
This was our second visit to Creekside and we had a fabulous time. This lovely hide-a-way, is a joy to visit, especially if you love nature like we do. The bright airy interior with its natural wood floors is so comfortable. We loved the well furnished inside as much as the natural setting all around us.
Beautiful wild flowers surround the cottage and were in full bloom. July butterflies were abundant and we identified almost a dozen different species on and around the property. A white tailed deer came by most evenings and gave us a very close look. While wading the creek we saw signs of recent beaver activity in the Alder bushes along the banks as we explored the beautiful sandy creek.
We visited most of the nature areas and hiked most of the trails in the area and had no sign of ticks. Of course we did apply insect repellent with at least 35% DEET before venturing out.
This time we used the canoe on Lower Herring Lake. What a beautiful place with its clean clear waters.
We were sad our last night to have to leave as a cool breeze filled with the scent of sweet fern lulled us off to sleep at the end of another wonderful week at Creekside.
What a great rental cottage!
Our family of five plus beagle stayed a weak at Herring Creek and loved it. We enjoyed the view of the creek, the privacy, and all the wildlife that hung out with us from birds to deer. The biggest woodpecker I've ever seen made an appearance on a nearby tree as I loaded our van to leave.
The location of this cottage is outstanding. We traveled to Traverse City for the Cherry Festival air show, we enjoyed a day up at Sleeping Bear Dunes, we floated on the Platte River, we road our bikes on the Betsie Valley River Trail, and we visited each of the four nature preserves closeby. We took the beagle on daily morning walks to each of the places, and we especially enjoyed the nearly vacant beach at the end of the hike at Green Point Dunes. Our dog is not the most social, so having some open beach to play with her on was great.
The cottage is very comfortable with sleeping spaces for each of our three teenagers and a lovely room for my wife and I. The house is setup to maximize the airflow, and we loved the evening cool breezes. The deck and sun room views of the creek are stunning, and the firepit over the bridge was a popular site for us. The kitchen is especially well-stocked for about anything you could want to cook. Nearby Elberta, Frankfort, Beulah, and Benzonia all have their charms and wonderful ice cream opportunities!
We did learn to watch for ticks, that seem especially bad everywhere this year, and we noticed warning sings all around the nature preserves and Sleeping Bear Dunes. We pulled a few off, but no bites. All in all, our stay at Herring Creek was exactly what we had hoped for--camping in style and comfort, memorable experiences for our family, and proximity to some of Michigan's greatest treasures. Thanks Norm for use of your place, and for being so helpful and easy to work with. We'd come back in a heartbeat.
Perfect to golf Arcadia Bluffs
House was great. Cozy & Casual. Great view of Herring Creek. We played 3 days at Arcadia Bluffs which is 5 minutes away. Had a campfire. Next time we will make use of the numerous canoes and kayak!
This is our second year renting Creekside, and it was wonderful! Very tranquil, peaceful and relaxing. We love this property and I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for an escape from city life. The natural beauty and the sounds of nature are prevalent here. The views of trees from every window really let you escape it all and connect with nature. It really is perfect.
