Our modern, well equipped home, half-way between Frankfort and Arcadia, overlooks Herring Creek. The area around the cottage is landscaped with native plants, a vegetable garden is available for the harvest of produce in season, and there is a bee hive on the edge of the property. Acreage on both sides of the creek is joined by a graceful arched footbridge. Across the creek from the house is an open area with picnic table and fire pit. The creek joins Upper Herring Lake and Lower Herring Lake, then flows out of Lower Herring Lake into Lake Michigan. Both Herring Lakes are noted fishing lakes, and the outlet of the creek into Lake Michigan is stunningly beautiful. Within 2 miles of the house we are blessed with four Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy nature preserves; the Arcadia Dunes, Green Point, Fruit Haven, and Upper Herring Lake preserves. Both Arcadia Dunes and Green Point have extensive Lake Michigan shoreline, and all have wonderful hiking, biking, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing trails. The town of Frankfort, 5 miles away, is a lively tourist destination, and the southern boundary of Sleeping Bear Dunes is just 12 miles to the north. We are 15 miles from the Crystal Mountain Ski Resort.
A large deck on the upper level overlooks Herring Creek. The deck is furnished with table, chairs, umbrella, and gas grill. Also on the upper level are a dining area, well equipped kitchen (dishwasher, coffee grinder/maker, Cuisinart, etc.), two bedrooms each with a full-sized bed, and a bathroom with whirlpool bath. Downstairs are a bedroom (full-sized bed) opening onto a small deck overlooking the creek, a common area, a bathroom, and a sunroom in which a single bed can be placed. The Sunroom contains a flat panel TV with DVR, an interesting movie selection, and other options for playing video files (no TV reception). We now have high speed internet.
There are many wonderful summer activities available in the area. Proximity to Herring Creek, the two Herring Lakes, Lake Michigan, and the nature preserves open unlimited opportunities for canoeing and kayaking, boating, swimming, fishing, hiking, biking, birding, and observing nature. We actually most enjoy our “off-season” time. The house is well insulated, with a gas furnace and efficient wood-burning stove. The fall colors are spectacular, and from mid-September to late November there are salmon spawning in the creek right in front of the house. Winter brings lots of snow, which means lots of snowshoeing and cross-country skiing on our 7 acres, or in the nearby nature preserves and Lake Michigan beaches. On request snowshoes or cross-country skis may be made available to guests. In spring Steelhead and other fish species spawn in the creek and woodland wildflowers, morel mushrooms, and migrating birds appear along the many beautiful nature preserve trails.
My wife and I are now retired and splitting our time between Chicago and Creekside Cottage.
Norman Bell purchased this house in 2006
We first visited the Herring Lakes area around 1990. We rented a cottage on Lower Herring Lake, fell in love with the area in general, and determined, by canoe, that the spot where Herring Creek flows into Lake Michigan is one of the most beautiful on earth. From that moment we knew we would find ways to spend more time in the area. In 1995 we purchased land on Herring Creek upstream from Lower Herring Lake where our family spent camping vacations. In 2006 the house across the creek became available and we purchased it and built a bridge joining the two properties. Now we have a wonderful retreat in the heart of the area we love.
Location, location, location. Two beautiful inland lakes, the Great Sweetwater Sea, and four amazing nature preserves all within a few minutes drive. A little farther, but in easy reach, are Sleeping Bear Dunes, Interlochen Art Center, Crystal Mountain Ski Resort, the wine country of Leelanau County, and the lively towns of Frankfort and Traverse City.
This is our second year renting Creekside, and it was wonderful! Very tranquil, peaceful and relaxing. We love this property and I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for an escape from city life. The natural beauty and the sounds of nature are prevalent here. The views of trees from every window really let you escape it all and connect with nature. It really is perfect.
Wonderful getaway! Clean, spacious, and well kept home, close to Frankfort, and many beaches. I came with my son, daughter, son in law, and my two year old grandson . We had a great time playing in the creek, and walking nature trails everyday The kitchen is so well equipped with everything that we needed. The garden was awesome as well, with fresh tomatoes and Blackberries. We will be back! Thanks so much to the Bell family, for opening up their home!
Our family stayed at your beautiful property two weeks and throughly enjoyed our stay. The creek and bridge were a big hit with our children and your home is centrally located from all the exciting things to do in the area. I was impressed with how well stocked your kitchen and entire house was as well. Thank you for your hospitality and sharing your beautiful home!
We all had an exceptional time, we took advantage of all the amenities including the cooks kitchen, the delightful garden, books, movies, grill, campfire and beautiful grounds. Everything seems so fresh and well thought out in your design. We fished in lower Herring lake with our fishing boat and fished the stream. We went to Arcadia and went threw the museum and Truly enjoyed the town of Frankfort and the witnessed many sunsets at the beach there. We would definatley like to come back for another get-a-way. Thank you so much for your hospitable home.

The property is tucked away from the road so you are surrounded by trees, which the large windows of the house allow you to enjoy. Having the creek right next to the house, and the picturesque footbridge, made for a lovely setting. We had lots of fun splashing in the creek and paddling. Small kayaks are best, as the creek has logs and parts are very shallow. We watched muskrats on several occasions swimming across the creek carrying green plants. Also saw fish and deer. The deck overlooking the creek is a wonderful place to hang out and eat. We were not bothered there by bugs as expected. The house was very clean, well-maintained, and updated. Pretty wood trim and lots of light.
The house is very close to the public boat launch at Lower Herring, a beautiful sparkling lake easy to paddle across to get to the outlet. We went to the outlet multiple times to enjoy its immense beauty and the excellent location for kids to play. We were entertained there for hours in the sand and water. Some of us also enjoyed quiet walks with no one else around in the nearby land preserves.
The native plants around the house are pretty and alive with birds and pollinators. We were pleased to find a monarch caterpillar on a butterflyweed plant. It appears there is no turfgrass on the property requiring mowing, so the place has a natural feel. The owner was very responsive. We'd like to come back!
Creekside is a nature lovers dream with wonderful natural setting. Owners were very helpful and friendly. Cottage was thoughtfully laid out and appointed to fit our every need. We visited near-by nature areas and were amazed by the flora and fauna. Frankfort was a great place to visit as well. Can't wait to go back.
