Adorable cottage with beautiful private beach

  • 4 of 5

I hate to say anything negative about this place, so I will start with all the positives.

This absolutely adorable little cottage was the perfect size and location for our family of 5. The three boys, ages 7 and 4, loved the bedroom with bunkbeds and twin bed. They loved the board games, movies, hammock, fire out, kayak and beach toys that were provided. The beach was perfect, a short walk from the cottage and very private. We never saw another person on the beach, except Leah's father who came over to introduce himself and make sure everything was ok. Perfect and beautiful location away from it all but not far from town, Acadia and bar harbor.

The kids loved playing on the huge beach at low tide and watching the tide come in. We loved taking them out in the kayak and sitting on the beach watching them play. The path to the beach needs to be better marked as we followed the blue rocks down the gravel road but once we got to the neighbors house we didn't know where to go and ended up walking through thier yard.

Everything that we could have needed was provided, which leads into the negatives. There was too much stuff. All of the cabinets and drawers where full of stuff. Some of it was or would have been nice to have if you forgot something, but random things like half full bottles of shampoo or other people's leftover condiments in The fridge or food in The pantry was just gross to me. There was no place to put our clothes and things away, so we had to live out of our suitcases. This did not bother my husband but I like to unpack and make myself at home which I could not do. The necessities could easily be pared down and kept in 1 or 2 cabinets, freeing up space for guests to put thier things. There were also way to many nicknacks and other random things around the house.

The place definitely needed a deep cleaning, cobwebs everywhere, bathtub that needed a good scrubbing and some bleach, and a new shower curtain which doesn't come halfway into the bathtub. The water was gross, it smelled like rust which made the bathroom and kitchen always stinky and dishes and showers were not pleasant to do. I understand it is well water and I don't know if that can be fixed but it was not an enjoyable experience.

Overall the place was lovely. A great little cottage in a perfect location. If the owner could adress some of the issues that we found I would highly recommend it and we would return if we were ever in Maine again.

Amazing peaceful retreat

  • 5 of 5

My family stayed here for two weeks and we had a terrific time. The walks on the beach, cool ocean breeze and easy going friendly Mainers made us love this place. The owner and caretaker were the best we've worked with in 8 years of using homeaway!

We loved it!

  • 5 of 5

What a wonderful time we had at this sweet little cottage. My husband, 1 year old daughter and I enjoyed peaceful mornings looking at the water from the front window. We loved walking on the beach -- a short walk from the cabin -- and, though we could see folks were staying at the camps nearby, we never saw another soul on the sandy shore. Leah and her dad were very responsive and made sure we had a great stay. We made two day-trips to Acadia from here -- the drive felt a bit long, but wouldn't trade it for the world.

Nice spot!

  • 4 of 5

Really nice neighbors, great location with easy access to Castine, Blue Hill, and Bucksport. Best part was swimming at high tide each day from the beautiful beach that comes with this cottage. Very well stocked kitchen and just felt so comfortable as our home for 2 weeks this August. The only (!) negative was the water which was not potable as it contained iron. Other than that, this place is great and the price is right!!

Nice Cabin

  • 4 of 5

Overall the cabin was nice and it was a great location. However it should have been communicated on the add that linens were required and that there was no potable water at the cabin due too heavy iron in their water supply

Peaceful, private cottage with great views

  • 5 of 5

This is a special place. The views and sunsets at the beach were beautiful. The beach was a great place to stretch your legs and look at the interesting driftwood and wildlife. The cottage is pristine and has all amenities, especially for a cook. The yard is spacious and wide, with lovely old trees. This would be a great location to bring kids as there is a very kid-friendly bedroom, the beach and yard, and lots of games. Castine is an interesting town with lots of historic buildings and a great lighthouse with a walk out to the rocky cliff. It is close enough to Acadia for day trips and its own peninsula, Blue Hill, is lovely to explore. Leah was very responsive and easy to work with. We were very happy here.

The town of Castine, Maine is a short drive from the celebrated Penobscot Maritime Museum in Searsport and Acadia National Park in Bar Harbor (approximately 1 hour, 15 minutes away). Along the way there are endless opportunities to stop at antique and craft shops where artisans offer the best of Maine made products. Hollywood Slots in Bangor, ME is just under an hour drive.

Castine offers tennis courts as well as a 9-hole golf course available to visitors at the Castine Golf Club in the village center. On the town common, there is a weekly farmer's market, occasional band concerts and summertime church suppers and craft fairs. The Witherle Library, also on the common, prepares summer programs for children, and generously affords visitors the chance to borrow books and audio materials without charge. Castine is proud to be the home of Maine Maritime Academy. Don't forget to visit Dyce's Head Lighthouse and/or partake in sunset kayak tours offered in town.

Dining choices include The Pentagoet (known for skillfully prepared dinners as well as its sophisticated afternoon high teas). Live lobsters can be obtained dockside on the Castine waterfront at Dennett's Wharf for a home meal. The Breeze is a waterfront eatery with delicious lobster rolls and crab rolls.

Groceries, supplies, laundry facilities, etc. are easily accessible in Bucksport.
