The house was just as it was described and shown in pictures. Very quiet, cozy, and with plenty of space for a family. Everything was very clean and organized. Having a kitchen to use is always a huge plus as well. We would definitely look to stay here again on our next trip to Yosemite!

About Shanna Calmes

John and Wendy have explored, worked and lived in the Yosemite area since 1991. The peaceful beauty, accessibility to outdoor activities, and variety of local wildlife were a big part of our decision to settle in the Sierra foothills. We bought the Midpines property in 1992 and first built on property in 1997.

Our cousins and in-laws Jon and Shanna grew up in California. Both have memories of time spent with their respective families camping, rafting and enjoying Yosemite and the Sierra. They currently live in the Bay Area traveling to the Mariposa area several times a year to visit family, friends and the park.

Both couples have traveled using vacation rentals and know the value of a comfortable home to plan activities from. Together we would like to welcome you to our guest house. Mariposa County is great place to unwind, and the boundary to Yosemite National Park is 25 miles away. Shanna is available by phone or internet to book reservations and to answer questions. Wendy and John are located in the Mariposa area to assist you on-site, offer local recommendations or allow you to enjoy complete, uninterrupted privacy at Pine Hill Guest House.

Shanna Calmes purchased this cabin in 1992

Why Shanna Calmes chose Yosemite Area

The Pine Hill Guest House was constructed, by us, in 1999. The cabin is located on a knoll offering forested, mountain views in every direction. The outdoor living area has several seating areas to put your feet up, a BBQ to prepare meals and an outdoor dining area to enjoy complete privacy.

What makes this cabin unique

On the ground floor, the saltbox style cabin has two living areas. The first kitchen/dining/living area is a comfortable space to prepare meals, relax or watch TV. The other half of the downstairs is the recreation room with additional living space to unwind. The recreation room has a book exchange, ping-pong table, dart board, some board games and puzzles. The area also offers pantry storage for the kitchen, laundry facilities and room for outdoor gear. All bedding, linens & paper goods provided

Guestbook comments from the owner

This property was a real gem to find - and our experience was simply fantastic! Our little family couldn't have been happier with the remote location and privacy and serenity this little casita provided us. The simple accommodations were accurately described with two very good sized bedrooms upstairs and a simple bathroom that separates the two. Downstairs, the living room is the perfect size (a careful watch-out on the granite surface housing the stove, which managed to catch all of our toes!), with an adjoining small dining room cubby, complete with a large kitchenette that was perfectly outfitted with everything you would need (a great relief for us who often find that most accommodations don't have even the basic necessities). You'll find a folio that contains everything you need to explore the local area - from the parks and recreation to the nearby town of Mariposa. I'm sure the restaurant recommendations in Mariposa were great, but we loved the house so much, we couldn't be bothered to go into town. One quick hint: the little grocery/gas pump in Midpines is actually pretty good with very basic sundries and the best prices for gas (which you don't want to pay the hefty price that is charged in El Portal). Fantastic WiFi and we (OK, the kids) were surprised by the great selection of movies on Netflix. Cell coverage in these parts is horrendous - so unless you have Verizon, you won't need your cell (unless for photography). The entire abode is smartly outfitted with reminders of the rugged West and nearby Yosemite. All in all, the interior was perfect for our needs, smartly appointed with an impression of really good taste. But the real gem is what you'll find outside: a great working grill, which was perfect for all our BBQ and s'more making needs, well-manicured grounds and an absolutely amazing panoramic view of the Sierras. Due to its location atop the mount, you can see in every direction, but the fading amber to the sinking sun in the west is the real attraction. Relaxing here amidst the strategically located patio and lounge chairs with a nice warm glass of Cabernet was the absolute perfect ending to a day full of exploring Sequoias, hiking endless trails and reflecting upon the awe of the whole area that you are experiencing. This is one of those very few places I have visited in the world where I can definitely say, "I'll be back." Shanna, thank you so much for welcoming us to your house - it was a very easy, yet transformational experience.

Very nice house

  • 5 of 5

The house was very clean and comfortable with beautiful views. It's situated on a mountaintop and very quiet. Everything was as advertised with nice touches like whole bean coffee available to grind. The trip to Yosemite Valley each day took about one hour. We would definitely return.

Great location out in the middle of the forest!

  • 5 of 5

This is a great property if you want to get the "cabin" feel. The property is in the middle of nowhere and it feels like there are no other cabins around. Everything worked great and the house was very clean. I will definitely use this cabin again for my next trip to Yosemite.
