This small cottage is old and rustic but has everything you will need as a base of operations in the Western UP. We used this as a place to sleep and eat breakfast before heading out the door to go fish in the numerous nearby lakes and hike in the Porkies. There was very minimal room to move around in the cottage with my family of four but for the money, it was completely acceptable. If we needed anything at all, the owners were easy to reach and helpful. I would think this would be a great place to stay in the winter with all of the local snowmobiling trails.
We liked the cabin and the community. People were very friendly and helpful in town, at the local store, restaurant and the library. We would recommend this property and area. We enjoyed biking and hiking.
Be forewarned, there is pond in the backyard and the mosquitoes were really bad when we were there in mid-August.
The cabin could use a better (firmer mattress) and bigger bed for two people sleeping together. I can't imagine four people sharing the cabin. It would be too small.
The cabin could also use a fire extinguisher and a colander for cooking and a few fewer knick knacks. TV/DVD etc was hard to figure out.
This cabin has got a great location. Easy drive to all the waterfalls along Black River Drive, the Porcupine Mountains, Lake of the Clouds, and Lake Superior. It's even walking distance to a restaurant/bar! The cabin itself has got everything one needs for a comfortable stay. Cell phone coverage might be a bit sketchy (all over the UP) so don't rely on a phone for Internet access. Bring a road map and, if you're visiting the area in June-July, mosquito repellent. Enjoy!
We had a great time at the cabin. The interior is lovely and provided everything we needed. It was a great basecamp from where we went hiking the porcies, silvania and on the NCT. The owner was very helpful and gave us lots of great tips. We had an amazing time at UP.
It is fully furnished and than some. The rural cabin has "your home" cabin kind of feel.
It was a perfect location to participate in the town 4th of July events. The sound of the birds each morning was a delight.
This cabin is only "rustic" in the sense it isn't a penthouse apartment. Full, functional kitchen, hot water, good water pressure and a comfortable bed. My fiancé and I stayed here because we got rained out of our camping plans, and it was so nice to come back to a warm, dry place after hiking the trails in Bessemer.
The cabin is by a pond and the fire pit is located right on the edge of it, so bring lots of bug spray if you plan on roasting any marshmallows. Also, if it happens to be raining a lot (as it was when we were there) the ground can get pretty soggy, so bring an extra pair of socks.
Ideally located near several small trails and a short drive from the Black River Harbor Recreation Area. Breakfast at Mike's in Ironwood a must on your way out of town. Gerald was prompt in returning our calls the few times we needed anything, and was always very accommodating.
