this spacious old house on the edge of the village combines charm, comfort and character. The private, flowered garden gives into a vast park overlooking the surrounding countryside.A big library/playroom next to the sitting-room also includes a bed(1m20)and can be used as a fourth bedroom. At the bottom of the garden a large,securely-fenced,sun-drenched salt water swimming pool screened in greenery and flowering shrubs encourages "farniente".The town of Périgueux, only 12 kms away, provides useful or pleasant facilities as required and, indeed!the whole region is renowned as a tourist and gastronomical center.

A Gem in the Dordogne!
From the minute we arrived, we knew we were going to enjoy our stay. We travelled as a family of four (2 adults + 2 children) but we could have easily fitted another two children. Anne, the French owner (who lives next door) met us warmly and showed us around the property. It was lovely and cool, despite the blazing French sun, due to the thick walls. The rooms are all of a good size, with shutters at the front of the house to keep the house cool. There is a shower room, with separate toilet and a separate bathroom with bath and shower attachment (no shower curtain so needs to be used as a bath), there is a medium-sized kitchen plus sitting and games room, plus a lovely little balcony area. Outside, there are plenty of places to sit, including an umbrellaed table and charis - the grounds are extensive, with peach, apple, pear and plum trees - truly beautiful! The swimming pool is amazing - could hardly get my children out of it - it is salt-water, which we were a little unsure about before we arrived, however, it is absolutely lovely to swim in and we found far better than chlorine. There is also a swing for the children to use. For provisions, we used the nearby Auchen shopping centre, approx' 10 mins drive which is very well-stocked, although quite pricey we found. We also shopped at the market in Pergiueux (Wed morning) and visited Brantome Market (Fri morning) both lovely to meander around. There are no shops or restuarants in the actual village. The property is well-placed for exploring the local area - Perigueux is approx. 15 mins drive and Brantome approx. 25 mins - both are worth a visit and have great restaurants especially if you'd like to try the local Perigordian food. There are other lovely places within an hours drive too but we didn't venture that far away from the pool on this visit, however the Dordogne is a really beautiful area of France to explore (kayaking, caves, gorgeous food etc). The one downside we found was there was no local boulangerie we could walk to for fresh bread/ croissants in the morning, however, Anne helpfully explained where the nearest place (about 10 mins drive) so was not really a hardship. Anne and her husband, Louis, made us feel very welcome - they were there to explain anything/ answer questions and then left us to it. If you are looking for a place to really relax and enjoy all the best the Dordogne has to offer, then we would highly recommend - we were very sad to leave!
Lovely home from home.
This lovely old house is peacefully situated in a small hamlet near Perigueux.
The owners are warm and welcoming and were happy to help with any queries. We enjoyed our stay and felt completely at home.
Character, spacious and comfortable house within large grounds with a great pool in quiet location.
We spent an enjoyable first two weeks of July at LCG. It took us several days before stepping out to explore the surrounding places of interest as the pool and grounds were irresistible in the great weather for our three-generation family of four adults, two children and a baby. The pool was large enough for 'proper' swimming (oldest grandson) yet 'fun' (younger grandson) and 'safe' (mum of baby). The well-kept grounds must be measured in hectares which allowed for exploring and the picking of the early apples and plums from the orchard. Bucolic!
The house looks exactly like its picture providing four large double bedrooms with comfortable beds (plus cot) and good internal and external living space for us to watch the world cup on our stay, bbq and enough games and toys to keep the kids occupied early or late in the day before spending most of the day outside.
We were well placed to explore this part of the Dordogne with its caves, gorges, lakes and interesting large and small medieval towns with further forays into Bordeaux and even Royan.
We all agreed that we were glad we stayed for two weeks as the time just flew by.
Thanks again to Anne and Louis for making our stay so memorable!
Wonderful relaxing family holiday in this characterful farmhouse
Our week in this lovely place went all too quickly. The owners, who live next door are the most charming, friendly people you could ever wish to meet and nothing was too much trouble for them. The house was impeccably clean and comfortably furnished and the large salt water swimming pool surrounded by colourful shrubs, was spectacular. The village lies within easy distance of so many interesting places: Périgueux, Brantôme,- where you can hire a kayak - Nontron, numerous ancient abbeys and chateaux, quaint villages, oozing history. The "épicier" up the road was very handy for croissants each morning and the enormous supermarket, " Auchan" at Marsac provided everything one could possibly need. It was a perfect location.
Merci Anne et Louis. Vous étiez très aimable et vous avez tout fait que notre séjour soit confortable et agréable . Nous sommes rentrés avec la tête pleine de mémoires à trésorer.
A blissful French rural escape.
We had a wonderful week at La Chapelle Gonaguet.
Wonderful house, hosts and holiday
This property is a wonderful French stone-built house with extensive grounds. It has a wonderful, open-air large salt-water pool with plenty of sun loungers for all. We had never used a salt-water pool before and on arrival we briefly wondered if it would be too salty, but it was great, so much nicer than chlorine, and much healthier too! There is an outdoor table-tennis table, a swing ball and swings and the house is set in a huge amount of land – plenty of space to run around (we played rounders) and explore.
The owners, Louis and Anne de Broves, are wonderful, friendly people; it was a pleasure to get to know them and their family. They live in the house next door and were always there when we needed them if we had any house-related queries or for ‘tourist information’ questions, but at the same time they left us to our own devices – the perfect combination.
The house is comfortable and inviting, a typical French ‘villa’, with tiled floors and rugs. The rooms are all very spacious and the single downstairs bedroom can also double as a second sitting room if preferred, although we spent virtually every night sitting outside, enjoying the fabulous weather. The bedrooms all have shutters, so good for blackout purposes with the early morning sun, and they all have double glazing too. The kitchen has a dishwasher, a microwave and a gas hob/cooker. It also had more than enough cooking utensils and an extensive range of crockery.
The village has a lovely little shop only a few minutes’ walk away that sells all the basics, including fresh bread and croissants, and only 10 minutes’ drive away there are plenty of supermarkets. There are so many wonderful places to visit nearby; dozens of chateaux, the rivers, the lakes with their sandy ‘beaches’ and pretty French towns. We had 10 days at Le Chapelle Gonaguet and (even though we’ve visited the Dordogne before) we still have so much lovely sights to visit in this region. The house was perfectly located for us to be able to travel in all directions to many of the sights of interest as well as picturesque towns such as Sarlat and Brantome and we very much hope to return in the future.
With three generations of visitors on this trip there were plenty of different requirements but we all had a superb time. Anne and Louis – thank you so much for making our holiday extra special. It wouldn’t have been the same without you!
