Overview

About the property

Private Self-Contained Cabin With Secluded Lake Access

An architectural jewel, constructed by a local woodworking artist, Kootenay Lake's Gatehouse-on-the-Point is fully self-contained with a complete galley kitchen and full bath, a wonderful (special) Queen bed, and dramatic lake and mountain views out every window. Radiant floor heating comforts you year around. There is a covered front porch for sitting or dining in the summer, one that looks east and south over trees, to the lake and to the Purcell mountains beyond.

We are located far from the highway, 15 minutes south of Kaslo and 6 minutes north of Ainsworth Hot Springs, on the eastern tip of Woodbury Point. This very affordable, elegant bungalow may prove easier to enjoy and somewhat less costly to interested guests who first explore the web for further information about staying with us. The Gatehouse-on-the-Point is situated upstairs, on the top floor, above an unoccupied double garage, and is out of sight from the main house on the property.

There is also a private lakeside deck, down 90 steps along moss covered and flowering cliffs of considerable beauty. This dramatic shoreline, with its steep drop off, also happens to offer some of the best shore fishing to be found on Kootenay Lake. Swimming in the lake is most comfortable between mid-July and mid-August.

Nearby can be found four golf courses, boating, fishing, hiking, river walks, fine birding, mountain biking, glaciers, cross-country skiing and provincial parks, plus the renowned local hot springs (cave and pool) to be enjoyed. All are easily accessible. At our Gatehouse you will find the perfect vacation hideaway for a deep rest, or for writing, celebration, or renewal.

About Barney Gilmore and Lorraine Symmes

Barney is a retired professor of psychology and the author of the book entitled On Retirements:Playing Seriously with the Work of Growing Older [BPS Books (2010)]. In 1987 he was named the Canadian Professor of the Year. The Gatehouse was the cabin/home to which he and his wife retired and where they lived until their current home was build on the property.

Barney's wife, Lorraine, was for many years an executive with Random House Canada.

Barney Gilmore and Lorraine Symmes purchased this bungalow in 1989

Why Barney Gilmore and Lorraine Symmes chose British Columbia Rockies

Both Lorraine and Barney have long been in love with North Kootenay Lake and the artistic communities that this area nourishes. Each of the four seasons around Ainsworth and Kaslo is different, and each offers many new opportunities for recreation, and enjoyment. The property was purchased as empty land. That first summer was spent just building the stairs down to the lake, and putting in the foundations of the Gatehouse. In the following two summers the Gatehouse was finished. After our Toronto home was sold the main house was built in 1994, and soon the Gatehouse became a secret treasure for select visitors from around the world. Many of our guests are repeat guests who find the property as special and unique as we do ourselves. Some of them have returned every year for up to six years and have become friends for life.

Lovely Peace and Quiet

  • 5 of 5

A beautiful, cozy home away from home. We enjoyed the natural settings and the lakeside deck. The covered deck was a great place to sit and watch the birds. We were close to Kaslo where we ate, shopped and explored for an afternoon. The hot springs were also close. This character home was the perfect place to renew our energy.

Peaceful Cottage in the Trees

  • 5 of 5

Everything was meticulously prepared prior to our arrival. Barney and Lorraine were great hosts. We were looking for a peaceful retreat to spend time together as a couple and this cottage filled the bill. We spent most of our time on the front porch drinking coffee and reading books, playing chess, or singing & playing guitar. The bed was very comfortable with enough large windows to open if you wanted a breeze to help you sleep. The kitchen had a gas stove if you wanted to cook. We did bacon & eggs and would have dinner in Kaslo. We enjoyed the halibut & chips nearby at the pub beside the marina about 3 minutes South. In Kaslo about 15 minutes to the North, the Treehouse Restaurant was perfect for breakfast. The pizza restaurant in the middle of the main street made delicious pizza and great lattes. The bakery across the street made great lattes and you could enjoy playing their collection of vinyl LP's of classic rock. We enjoyed a jazz performance by the Ghostly Hounds at the bistro on the corner. They make great lattes there, too. We soaked in the Ainsworth Hot Springs about 6 minutes to the South. We spent one day exploring Nelson to the South. There we had fish tacos and lattes at a tapa bar that had a deck overlooking the lake. Overall, it was a great getaway. On the Friday night we attended a jam session at a bar to the south with our friend and local musician, Vince Curley. That was great fun. I never did fish from the dock on the lake because it rained and stormed during our stay, but there is always next time. The cottage was a perfect main base that was comfortable if you wanted to stay there all day or central if you wanted to explore other places along the lake. We would return, for sure.

Valentine's Day Get-away

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the Gatehouse for relaxing Valentine's Day weekend. The gatehouse was crafted such character and simplicity which made it so inviting and comfortable. Lorraine and Barney do an amazing job of ensuring the cabin has everything you need from towels, dishes, extra blankets... There was even soaps and shampoos available if needed. They provide you with maps and information for the surrounding area and even have a list of restaurants with the type of food each of them serve and recommendations for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

The property overlooks kootenay lake and has such unique architectural features. There is a winding staircase that leads you down to the water where you can sit and listen to sound of the water hitting the rocks and take in the spectacular views of the mountains. Unfortunately when we were there it rained all weekend, but it stopped just long enough for us to take a bottle of wine and some blankets down to the water.

A short drive away is Ainsworth Hot Springs where we enjoyed a nice Saturday morning, and a short drive the other way you will find the quaint town of Kaslo where we had some amazing food and caught some live music at the local cafe.

If you are looking for a place to de-stress and appreciate time spent away from technology, you will not find a better place than this.

Very clean, comfortable and will give you a renewed appreciation for this beautiful area.

Thank you Barney and Lorraine for a wonderful weekend. We hope to return in the summer or fall! :)

Wonderful place for a romantic vacation

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the Gatehouse for one week, and we had a wonderful vacation. It was quiet, unique, and had all the amenities needed. The location was perfect for us as we were very close to hiking trails in the area. It was very relaxing, and we will definitely be back!

The local hot springs are a must visit. And the Sternwheeler/Museum in Kaslo. There are wonderful hiking paths in the area, one of the most beautiful along the Kaslo River in Kaslo. The Gatehouse comes equipped with guides to many of the local opportunities for wilderness experiences and other local attractions.
