About the property

Villa Somoya - Privacy and elegance with spectacular views of 19 US/BVI islands!

INTRODUCTION

Villa Somoya is Virgin Gorda’s newest luxury villa. Construction of this 4,500 square foot home was completed in August 2014. Please see our video to view the fantastic views from atop the ridge where the villa commands views from all angles.

This 3-bedroom / 3 bathroom home sits on a hilltop ridge and features spectacular views. From the home’s elevated setting guests can see up to 19 U.S and British Virgin Islands in a stunning panorama of blue seas and rock formations.

Thoughtfully designed to coexist with Virgin Gorda’s natural setting, Villa Somoya is nestled among giant granite boulders that reveal the island’s volcanic origins. The property’s indigenous trees and rock formations have been preserved and further enhanced with landscaped gardens. The villa’s setting makes it hard to tell where nature ends and Villa Somoya begins.

Centrally located in a private and exclusive residential area, Villa Somoya is 5 minutes drive from a dozen restaurants, half-dozen grocery stores, and the island’s best beaches including Little Trunk Bay, Spring Bay, and The Baths. The location is ideal!

DESCRIPTION

Villa Somoya is made up of two buildings surrounded by expansive outdoor decks and covered terraces. The use of exotic woods and the inclusion of high-end fixtures and appliances give this home a sophisticated and upscale vibe. The villa’s furnishings are the perfect blend of classic design with Caribbean accents.

A number of spectacular design features make Villa Somoya a great home for gathering with family and friends. The villa’s well-equipped and modern kitchen features a large breakfast bar that opens to a covered terrace. Also on the terrace you will find the villa’s outdoor kitchen with a built in gas grill and mini-fridge. Completing this space, a large dining table makes it easy for guests to enjoy alfresco dining.

The villa’s bedroom suites are spacious, air conditioned, and designed for comfort. Each bedroom is equipped with a private bathroom. The villa’s master suite features a private patio that overlooks the property and has views to Tortola and beyond.

OUTDOORS SPACES

With out a doubt, guests of Villa Somoya are going to enjoy this home’s outdoor spaces. The large covered terrace features a wide variety of seating options and provides plenty of shade from the sun. The terrace also features a Bose audio sound system and a motorized mirrored disco ball that transforms the space when the sun goes down.

In front of the covered patio is a deck lined with lounge chairs. Guests looking to work on their tan can do so while enjoying panoramic water views.

Between the villa’s guest bedrooms, a wooden deck is home to one of the property’s most spectacular vistas. This natural breezeway is a great spot for soaking in the views.

BEDROOMS

Villa Somoya’s 3-bedroom can sleep up to 6 adults. The Master Suite and one of the guest bedrooms both feature King sized beds. The third bedroom features two Queen sized beds.

Larger groups, up to 8 guests, can also be accommodated. For example, 4 adults can sleep in the villa’s two King sized beds and up to 4 children can sleep in the villa’s two Queen beds. Alternatively, supplemental bedding including a pull out couch in the great room as well as two portable Twin mattresses, give guests additional flexibility when it comes to sleeping arrangements. For families with babies or toddlers a pack n’ play and a crib are also available.

In certain situations we are willing to consider groups larger than 8 people. Please let us know the make-up of your party and we will help you determine if Villa Somoya is a good fit.

About Christi Maddox

We came to Virgin Gorda as tourists and fell in love with the island, its culture and people. We decided to build a home here and Villa Somoya is the output of that effort. The home was completed in August of 2014.

Why Christi Maddox chose British Virgin Islands BVI

This property overlooks the island from a number of unique vantage points. You can see and hear the Atlantic Ocean breaking on the reef below. You can observe completely unspoiled tracts of land. The highest peak on the island, Gorda Peak, is visible in the distance with the reef in the foreground. In the other direction the view allows you to see up to 19 U.S. and British Virgin Islands in a sweeping panorama. The views in every direction are fantastic and they are constantly changing as the weather floats by overhead. We fell in love with the idea of a mountaintop retreat where you can see it all and be close enough to do it all, but in total privacy and seclusion. That is what we were looking for and we're confident that you'll feel the same. We welcome you to come and experience Villa Somoya for yourself.

What makes this villa unique

To see the true beauty of the villa, please view the attached video in the photo and vidoe link area. Villa Somoya allows you to have all the privacy of a "get-away from it all" vacation AND be minutes from everything that you'd like to do. All the best beaches, restaurants and bars are just a few miles away- so the location is the perfect blend of close, but also private and secluded. Villa Somoya is nestled in a private community (Princess Quarters Estates) where much of the indigenous plants, shrubs and trees are still present. The ridge upon where the villa is located allows you to take in the full view of the area. If you like panoramic, this is the place for you. The villa has a commanding view of the entire south western side of the island from an elevation that puts you above it all. You can view the rugged windswept Atlantic, the Sir Francis Drake Channel or the island itself. But if you choose to close your eyes, and swing in the hammock or sit on any number of the relaxation decks, you can just listen to the waves crash on the reef below and smell that unforgettable mixture of ocean salt and tropical island all blend together. It's an idyllic spot and we hope you will enjoy all that the villa has to offer.

Everything was great, big kitchen, awesome bedrooms and breathtaking views!! Only thing that could improve is water pressure and constant hot water

Owner's Response: Thank you for the review and we are pleased you had a wonderful stay Villa Somoya. We regret the lack of hot water during your visit, Virgin Gorda was suffering islandwide power outages that caused some interruptions in certain home services. We look forward to welcoming you back to VG!

The Jewel of the BVI

  • 5 of 5

This beautiful home is an absolute gem. One couldn't ask for a more comfortable abode or more mesmerizing views of the surroundings. The house is situated at what is probably the highest point of the southern end of the island. At night, we enjoyed soul stirring views of the moonlit water, the lights of the surrounding islands, the milky way, and shooting stars from the beautiful, expansive multilevel tiled deck. With the windows open, one is lulled to sleep by the smooth sound of the breeze from the trade winds. During the day, gleaming sailboats and even five-masted sailing ships drift along the sound with the entrancing backdrop of the neighboring islands. There is a magnificent sunset every evening from the back deck, and a beautiful sunrise and a staggering view of Taylor Bay from the front. One could not ask for a more ideal location on the entire island.

The house is very conveniently located to access points for several spectacular beaches, comfortable and casual dining / drink spots, and not far from fantastic fine dining, night clubs, yacht clubs and more. I feel fortunate to have found a place that exceeded my expectations in every way. Villa Somoya made for a tremendous, comfortable, satisfying vacation. It was beyond difficult to say good bye to the place when it was time to return home to reality! You will NOT be disappointed with this gorgeous, relaxed, luxurious yet unpretentious, comfortable, well appointed and well designed vacation villa!

Villa Somoya, what a place!

  • 5 of 5

Stayed at Villa Somoya for a couple weeks over Christmas/New Years. This house has it all, the view, amenities, the solitude and privacy. The huge patio on the Tortola side of the house is unbelievable, you could just almost live outside. The patio and deck on the other side of the house has a dreamy wind that blows all day which helps to keep things cool at night and during the day while just sitting or reading. The kitchen has everything you could possibly need for cooking and entertaining, plus a large outdoor grill and a beverage refrigerator on the large outdoor patio. The owners have thought of everything. The house is within a short drive to food shopping, the beaches down at Spring Bay and an assortment of restaurants. Beach chairs, an umbrella and plenty of beach towels are available for your beach day pleasures. Pack light, Villa Somoya has a washer and dryer at your disposal. Sit out on the lower patio at night with all of the lights off and look at the stars, quite a sight. Make sure you plan some evenings out to Coco Maya, Che Bamboo, Sugarmill and Hog Heaven. For lunch make sure you go to the Mad dog for sandwiches and cocktails, tell Edith that Charlie sent you. Christy will make sure that you are acquainted with the amenities in the house and Margaret will help you keep it clean. Take a day trip out to Anegada to see the pick flamingo's and some of the largest unspoiled beaches you will ever see. If you are adventurous, rent a boat over at Leverick Bay Watersports and go island hopping, you can get a captain if you need one, visit Foxy's and Soggy Dollar over on Jost VanDyke, go snorkeling at the Indians, visit the Willy T, Peter and Cooper Islands. All in all, if you are looking for a great place to stay on Virgin Gorda, whether you want to sight see, go to the beaches or just relax and do nothing, Villa Somoya will not disappoint.

Villa Somoya was a very nice change of pace

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I had stayed on Virgin Gorda twice before, both times in Nail Bay. Villa Somoya was a really nice change of pace being much closer to Spanish Town and The Baths. The views in any direction are great, Tortola, Gorda Peak, road to North Sound, airstrip (will get to this later), Fallen Jerusalem, The Baths, and the Valley are all within view. There are literally two sides of the house, the windy (east) and the more still (west) on the patio.

There was only my wife and I but this house could easily accommodate 6-8 people. We never used AC the whole week because the breezes provided the best cooling. It's convenient to many restaurants in the Valley but is also stocked with everything you would need to cook at home. Bring your ipod with favorite music. The villa is at the top of a hill but if you like to run, it is convenient to all the roads or just do hill repeats. The back terrace is also a great place to practice yoga.

Now to the best features. The house is surrounded by, and includes, the same type of boulders that typify VG. The ones in the front (windy) side provide great climbing and views of the airplanes arriving and departing from the airport. Watching and filming the planes coming in and out was one of our favorite activities. Have I mentioned the outdoor shower? Great shower outside the second master bedroom. It doesn't drain that well but damn, it's an outdoor shower.

If you want a place to chill, entertain, or be in a central location on VG, this place will likely fill the bill. If you don't absolutely require a pool, there is one at Top of the Baths restaurant and there is also Spring Bay, then you will love this place.

Lastly, I just want to thank Howard for getting us acquainted with house and Margaret for helping keep it clean and appointed.

I am missing Virgin Gorda so much right now.

Perfect Romantic Getaway

  • 5 of 5

We booked a trip to Virgin Gorda for a special occasion - our third anniversary. The outstanding service began at the airport when we were met by Howard, the property manager, who had arranged for our rental car to be waiting for us as soon as we walked off the plane. Howard was funny, friendly and knowledgeable about the best beaches, restaurants and grocery stores on the island. After the quick drive from the airport we pulled up to the house and I have to say I was floored! The house is on top of one of the highest spots on the south side of Virgin Gorda. We had seen the photos, but in person the views were even more amazing. Walking up to the front door of the villa, all you see is the Caribbean, all you feel is the breeze. It was the perfect welcome after traveling.

Howard showed us all the amenities and fixtures in the villa, however I sort of zoned out after I saw the world’s best hammock. Off the main outdoor space (which includes super comfy couches and a top of the line outdoor grill), there is a macrame hammock that provides a view of both sides of the house. Look left and you see the ocean, look right and you see the lush green of Virgin Gorda with a backdrop of sky and sea. Absolutely incredible. Seeing as it was our anniversary I had to share, but I hogged as much hammock time as I dared!

What was so nice about staying in the villa, as opposed to a resort or hotel, was that it really was like having a home away from home. The kitchen had every cooking instrument I could ever want, and we were able to cook a fair amount of our meals. The house was a quick three minute drive from a grocery store, so it was easy to stock up on the basics. We elected to have Margaret, a woman recommended by the owner, prepare a home cooked West Indian meal for us one night. Having a taste of the local flavor while watching the sunset over the island is a memory we won’t forget!

Virgin Gorda itself was such a wonderful, friendly, beautiful place. Having a home base and really exploring one island was really special. We were so relaxed and really enjoyed driving to all the different beaches, learning the Island.

When all is said and done, I can’t wait to book our next trip down! Highly recommended!!

Villa Somoya is located on a ridge set inside a private estate community with commanding views in one direction of the windswept Atlantic Ocean breaking on a reef - and in the other, the Sir Francis Drake Channel. 19 U.S. and British Virgin Islands are visible from the many decks that have been designed into this hilltop retreat for just this purpose. Villa Somoya is far enough away from everything to guarantee privacy, but close enough for easy access to breathtaking beaches- including Spring Bay, the Crawl, Valley Trunk, Little Dix Bay, Savannah Bay and the world famous 'Baths'. You are also only a few miles from Spanish Town, the Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbor, Coppermine Point and its historic ruins as well as many local restaurants. Most places of interest, including the north end of the island are located within 20 minutes of the villa. The British Virgin Islands are referred to as 'Nature's Little Secrets' and Villa Somoya is perfectly located to serve as your home base to explore all that Virgin Gorda has to offer.

Many guests find themselves being adventurous and taking day trips to the many beaches that surround the island. With crystal clear water, the snorkeling is excellent and the reefs right off the beaches allow for easy swims. The two main roads that go around Gorda Peak to the north side of the island have a number of viewing decks and offer a panoramic view of the Caribbean.

Of course, you may prefer the quiet solitude of this spectacularly angled villa and enjoy looking at the unspoiled natural foliage that extends from the boulders that surround the villa down to the reef below. Amazing views are visible no matter which direction you look.
