We had major issues with mold, mildew, & musty odor. After airing, scrubbing & spraying everything in sight with Lysol it was livable. We were concerned about the weather turning colder & having to shut the house up if the mustyness would return. Both of us experienced sinus & breathing issues while there.
I am handicapped & was unable to use the bathroom shower. The surround is wood & therefore the suction grip grab bars would not adhere. There is a nice outside hot shower just outside the door which is usable until it gets cold out. The location on Barnstable Harbor is quiet & just lovely. The view from the patio towards Sandy Neck lighthouse is spectacular. Watching all the different boats was great.
There is comfortable double bed in the open alcove behind the living room. The one bedroom contains a double bed, twin bed & a set of bunks all in the one room. We were unable to use many of the drawers or the one closet because every available shelf & drawer contained the owners clothing or children's games & toys.
Beds were comfortable. We had all the beach & bath towels anyone could possibly use but hand towels & face cloths were scarce as were linens for the kitchen. The kitchen is small but well appointed. The owners were pleasant people who did try to accomodate our requests.
The rental is lovely & in a great location. The major concern is the mold issue.
We had such a wonderful vacation staying at Steve and Ellen's home! They were super nice and helpful. Barely knew they were even home most of the time. The first floor (where we stayed) was super clean and spacious. Very comfortable for our family of five. The backyard was expansive and had a gorgeous view...with the use of the firepit, our night was filled with millions of stars and smores! We also utilized the kayaks and the beach was a short walk up the road.
Thank you Steve and Ellen...it was a pleasure to meet you both and hopefully stay at your place again soon!

Can't wait to come back!
This listing was nothing but perfect for our little vacation. The backyard alone had a beautiful and relaxing view. It provided a great place for yard games at the end of long beach days and relaxing mornings with a cup of coffee. We loved the outdoor shower. Since this was my first time vacationing on the Cape we found the location to be close to Dennis beaches and kid friendly activities such as mini golf, etc in both Dennis and Yarmouth. Our space slept us comfortably and there wasn't anything we felt we were missing.
Great apartment rental for a young family!
This apartment was perfect for us! It is in the bottom floor of Steve and Ellen's house, with a lovely view out over the marsh to the ocean. The neighborhood is very quiet and remote, it's a great place to relax. Steve and Ellen were home during our stay, but they respected our privacy, as we respected theirs also. We are a family of 3, my husband and I and our 2 year old daughter. The size was perfect for us. One bedroom with plenty of room, 3 twin beds and one full, and the 2nd full bed in the open living area. The kitchen space was small but very clean. The deck space leads right out to a large yard with lovely views. Steve and Ellen even had some kids toys and a baby pool we were able to borrow for our daughter (they have grandkids who often visit). There is a small beach area, right at the end of the road (about 4 min walk). This area has some sand and some marsh grass and easy access to the water for a swim or a kayak ride, and at low tide you can walk out to a large sandbar. It is very quiet and private as only locals know about it. Our daughter loved it. One day we also drove to Craigville beach for the day which was less than 15 minutes away. Branstable is a very cute small town with a great coffee shop (Nirvana) and Ice cream shop, and a few cute restaurants. Steve and Ellen were wonderful hosts! We hope to come back next year!
Thank you for the great review. We enjoyed having you and your family visit, such wonderful quests! We're so glad your daughter enjoyed herself and we hope to see you again next year. All our best, Ellen & Steve
Great stay in Barnstable!
Everything was exactly as described in their post - clean + tidy - and with bikes + kayaks available for use! Steve + Ellen are incredibly kind and were available at any time for help or tips about the surrounding areas. We loved the view of the harbor and the big yard.
Only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is because we did a lot of cooking at the cottage and the kitchen isn't that well equipped to cook big meals. No biggie - but a few more large bowls, a decent knife, a large cutting board... A few more basic items would be great for folks looking to cook at the cottage.
We'll be back!
My kids and I had a great time during our stay. The owners are very nice and helpful. The apartment is just as advertised and is comfortable and clean. If you have a car, the location is great. It is close to towns/shopping, there is a view of Barnstable Harbor and it is a short walk or bike to the beach. The water is clear and beautiful. We especially enjoyed the kayaks that the owners made available for our use. We were there on the 4th of July and enjoyed watching several fireworks displays from the local beach. We will stay there again next time we go to Cape Cod.
Located just 1 mile east of Barnstable Village off Old Kings Highway, RT 6A, 1/2 mile north towards Barnstable Harbor. Walk or ride bikes to Barnstable Village, Superior Court and Sturgis Library, the oldest library building in the country. Three (3) miles to Cape Cod mall and 5 miles to Hyannis Harbor.
