About Carole Schmieder

My family bought this property as a summer escape from Phoenix, AZ heat. We love it here -- and no longer live in Phoenix even during the winter. One of my daughters and I take care of the property -- we love to garden! -- and the rest of our family comes for three weeks every summer. The rest of the year my daughter and I live in our smaller cottage in the rear of our 1 1/4 acre lot. More than anything, we love to see and hear families playing and enjoying themselves at our property and in our beautiful area. The Redwoods are a national treasure.

Carole Schmieder purchased this house in 2007

Why Carole Schmieder chose Crescent City

We bought this property after retirement because we have enjoyed both the Pacific Ocean and the Redwoods since childhood. Now, we can enjoy the area and house whenever we want to.

What makes this house unique

My family, who are scattered across this continent, bought this property as a place to gather. Siblings and spouses enjoy being with each other while the kids play and enjoy 'Cousins Camp.' This has been the perfect place for our extended family to enjoy each other and for the cousins to truly know each other. We hope to keep this tradition going from generation to generation. Our reason for offering our home as a vacation rental when we are not using it is to share the joy our family has when we gather here.

Just like home away from home!

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay! The home is clean, very well equipped with anything you might need. We brought a lot of our own kitchen tools, pans etc since we were preparing Thanksgiving Dinner. We found out that it was totally unnecessary. All you need is your clothes and food. One of the things that I really loved was that there were little blankets and throws everywhere. It was easy to curl up and relax. The area is gorgeous. There is so much to do at the house and in the area. If we had a question Carole was responsive within minutes. We hope to be able to go back soon! Five stars all the way!!

We had a FABULOUS time!!!! All age brackets!!!! Nice owner-folks!!!!

This place was THE BEST find!!! Because of the smoke and fire in the Redding area, our family reunion was about to be a bust! My Canadian children couldn't get south, my Oregonian children were going have to reroute themselves 9 hours out of the way, and the HORRIBLE smoke was putting a damper on everything. Then my husband found this jewel north of Crescent City!!! It could not have been better!! Kid, dog, assorted age group friendly this house has everything you could want. We will be booking it again next year! Big deck for hanging out, fireplaces for coziness, large kitchen for those who like to cook, comfy beds, jungle gym-y contraption in backyard.......just GREAT!!! Thank you Carol and your daughter for making this the best weekend! Sincerely the Smith, Lihn and Bickle clan!!! xoxoxoxoxo

Owner's Response: We are delighted we were able to help you enjoy your family reunion in fresh, clean air. We cherish our wonderful microclimate in Fort Dick -- on the northern edge of Crescent City. Your extended family was a great group to host and we sincerely hope we will see you again next year. Thanks for staying with us.

awesome family house!

  • 5 of 5

just like the reviews i had read previously to staying here, it was great for a family setting. tons of stuff to keep the kids busy and a fully furnished kitchen allowed us to leave a lot of normal supplies at home, making traveling much easier. the owners, carol and sue, are some of the nicest people you will ever meet and were extremely easy to work with. we will definitely be staying with them again.

TOP OF THE LIST!!

  • 5 of 5

Our stay was wonderful Carol and Sue have thought of everything . I have rented many Homeaways and this is definitely top of my list. The house was so clean fully stocked with everything you could even imagine you would need. Plenty of things to keep our 7 kids aging from 2 to 17 busy something for everyone. Location is great not far from the beach or town. Definitely will stay again. Really a true gem!!

You will be in the beautiful redwoods -- a national treasure -- with many National and State forests nearby. Ranger-led hikes are available, as well as the opportunity to enjoy hiking on your own. There are a number of fabulous trails of varying length. Take along a picnic lunch and make it a day. Bird watching is fantastic at Lake Earl, only 3 miles away. There is just about any activity you might hunger for except snow and cold. Crescent City remains cool all year round -- neither cold nor hot. You can enjoy the beautiful blue skies and many sunny days, as this property is in a sheltered area protected from the ocean wind and fog -- even though the ocean is only four miles away. Of course, there is a multitude of beaches up and down the coast. Many of these beaches have very specialized attractions. Sand dollars are prevalent on a different beach from the beach with ocean polished glass and different from the best beach for a bonfire and different from the beach with the best tide pools. Wow! You are a mere 10 minutes from Oregon or downtown Crescent City (20 minutes to Brookings, OR -- a fun day trip with another harbor and more beaches). If collecting shells, make sure to not collect anything alive, and remember all the other people and animals that want to share those shells. A number of exciting zipline activities are available in the area.

Trees of Mystery -- an educational and beautiful hike through a privately owned redwood forest -- complete with a sky ride --is about 25 miles away. There are numerous lighthouses in the area. Crescent City (and Brookings) both have a number of wonderful restaurants. Nearby annual events include the Del Norte County Fair, Sea Cruise Car Show, Smith River Days, the July Kite Festival and many, many festivals celebrating everything from flowers to berries to fish to local artisans.

This home is the perfect place for a family looking for a house they can enjoy and relax in. There is a large play structure in the backyard, along with a creek, a small pond for the older children and a tree house for the teenagers wanting their own hideaway. Plus a large deck with plenty of seating for moms, dads, and grandparents to relax, enjoy themselves, and watch the children enjoying themselves. A gas barbecue and outdoor dining space are also deck residents. Plenty of privacy on the entire property and yet the house is not so rural as to be isolated.
