About Denise Reid
We were lucky enough to relocated to Shelter Cove from Dana Point, Ca in 2004.
Denise Reid purchased this House in 2013
Why Denise Reid chose Shelter Cove
Just about everything in the house is new and custom. A lot of time and love went into it. The house is within walking distance to the coffee shop, the pizza place, Black Sands beach, golf course and two walking trails. The house is close enough to the airport that you could walk there if you had to. We live in Shelter Cove full time and are available if problems occur.

Lovely place with great owners!
This place has great views and is in a quite area of the cove. The owners were very helpful and accommodating to our situation, great people with a great place.
Comfortable cabin but not clean
First impression was not good when we walked though the house and found a BAT in one of the bedrooms. Luckily we were able to force it out of an open window. If we had trouble I don't know how we would have found help since there is NO signal in Shelter Cove.
The house needs some TLC. The furniture is older and the photos don't lie about that, but despite that the cabin wasn't overly clean. There were cobwebs in the corners of the house and above the stairs. The stair railing was sticky. The game room closet looked like kids (not mine) had complete run amok. The ping pong table had 2 working ping pong balls and the rest were dented and should have been thrown away. Given that there is a cleaning service charge, a little attention to detail would go a long way.
The house at night has really poor lighting. The bedrooms were too dark to be able to read books to my children with the existing lamps. All lighting is via lamps so the few halogen lamps had to be moved around the house to provide adequate light. Again, not a huge deal but a little annoying.
We happen to be there on an unseasonably hot weekend and there was no relief to be had at night as there is no AC. Not the owners fault, but even after driving 45 minutes to town to get fans, the house was unbearably warm.
We did enjoy the location, the view and the ample room for our family of 5.
This was the best rental. We had everything we needed. Very comfortable and the neighbors were so nice and helpful. The view was the best we have had. We really recommend this rental. The owners are so nice to work with. We hope to be able to rent this house again and again.
Had a kitchen with everything you need lots of space for the family and even had a game room
Our family had a great time.. house was renovated and was in a good quiet neighborhood.
Very nice overall. Place was neat and well kept.. very quiet and good neighborly atmosphere. We plan to return. Would be 5 stars if cellphone service was better. Also no wifi service. But still was well worth the price.
Good view, plently of beds. Dishwasher leaks and is in need of repair
Three blocks from Big Black Sand Beach. Four blocks to Little Black Sand Beach. Located on the North end of the Cove, usually out of the fog and the wind. There is a public nine hole golf course where every hole has an ocean view. A deal at only $10 a day.
World class mountain bike trails in the Kings Range only about 5 miles away.
Walking trails within walking distance, including a Fitness trail.
Point break surfing at Big Flat to longboard cruising at Wash Rock.Dead Man's and No Pass offer more of a challenge. Four wheel drive Vehicle access during low tides. When the swell is big you'll see towing surfing. Paddle boarding in the bay.
Fishing for Black Cod and Blue Cod, Ling Cod Cabazon, Vermillion (west coast Red Snapper). The King Salmon's are caught here with a 2 per day limit. Flat fish are also abundant, including the Pacific and California Halibut. We have two seasons of Dungeness Crab (the meatiest crab) with a 10 a day limit. Albacore Tuna arrive when the water temperature hits 63 degrees, catch as many as your boat holds. Pretty everything you can catch on the boat except Salmon and Tuna you can catch on on the shore (I'm just going to let it be known I've seen friends and family catching Salmon from Kayaks).
For a taste of the past Abalone is still found in the coves. Shelter Cove is a one time record holder for the largest Abalone at 11 5/8'.
Muscles, clams, octopus, and even Sea Urchin's.
Day and yearly Fishing licenses, and Abalone report cards are available.
The Cape Mendocino Light house was relocated here to the Cove. They open up during the summers on the weekends
There are Tide Pools were we've found Abalone shells the size of my pinky fingernail. You'll find crab, snails, hermit crabs, sea anemone, Sea Lions, Elephant Seals, River Otters playing in the surf, Pelicans. See the Osprey dive bombing for fish. We've seen Bald Eagles!
The house is 5 blocks from the air strip.
