About Jeremy Baldwin
Maiandros was the second house we built in Crete, seduced by this spectacular site overlooking Souda Bay. We visit at least three times a year and are never short of enthusiastic friend and family visitors. The variety of Cretan life is a wonderful contrast with our home base near Bath.
Jeremy Baldwin purchased this Villa in 2005
Why Jeremy Baldwin chose Georgioupoli
Plaka is a wonderful holiday village with Greek residents and a multi-cultural visitor mixture. Close around the village square – which is just a 5-minute walk from the villa – is a sufficient variety of eating, drinking and entertainment facilities to occupy many visitors for their whole holiday! If you don't plan to travel around the island you may not even need a car, just a taxi to and from the airport.
What makes this Villa unique
Maiandros Villa is in a short private road, in a quiet, semi-rural wooded setting on a hillside, giving panoramic views over Souda Bay from the house, the balconies and the pool terrace. Plaka village square with bars, tavernas and shops is a 5-minute walk and a 14-minute walk leads down to the coastal town of Almyrida where there are more shops, tavernas, car hire and a sheltered bay with soft sandy beaches and sailing. A number of tavernas in the area feature live Greek music in the evenings. Even a fortnight is too short to enjoy Crete’s huge variety of history, archaeological sites, landscape, beaches and activities. It’s a large island – over 160 miles long with three high mountain ranges and a population of 600,000. Everywhere you see evidence of the island's volcanic formation, leaving rugged terrain and many wonderful gorges that are a delight for walks, the best-known being the Samarian. Charming, ancient Chania with its Venetian harbour, boat trips, quaint streets and lovely shops is 30 minutes by car. The famous 4000-year-old Minoan site at Knossos, Europe's oldest civilisation, is about 90 minutes by car. There are scores of other Minoan settlements all over the island, including Phaestos, Malia and Zakros. If you'd like to look further afield there are regular ferries to exotic Santorini from Heraklion. Plan on staying 2 nights in Santorini, enough to tour the volcanically-active caldera and enjoy the shops. There is also an extensive ancient city on a hill in the east of the island. A quick side trip to Athens is perfectly feasible, travelling overnight by ferry from Souda which is about 20 minutes by car. Arrive early and go to the Acropolis when it opens, avoiding the crowds, thence to the wonderful museum. Enjoy a late and leisurely lunch in the old market area around the Acropolis and return that night back to Souda. Take time to travel into the foothills of the White Mountains and get gently lost to enjoy some natural Cretan hospitality.

The Villa and area was a great place to stay.
My wife, daughter and myself were looking for a quiet weeks break and that is what we got with Villa Meaendros. It is a beautiful Villa, the description does not do it justice. It is in a wonderful position, well maintained, overlooking Souda Bay. Within 5 minutes walking are the village restaurants in Plaka all of which do great food in a relaxed atmosphere. And Crete and its people, are so welcoming and friendly we would certainly go again. We had a wonderful week, we hope to do it again.
This is an excellent property, constructed, equipped and maintained to a high standard. The description and photographs are accurate and informative and Jeremy provides lots of information and responds to questions promptly.
Everything you need (shops, restaurants, tavernas ...) is available in the village, a short walk away; and beaches, bigger shops, and sightseeing within a 30-minute drive. Despite being so close to all the facilities the villa is secluded and totally quiet with splendid open views.
We wouldn't hesitate to rent again if we were returning to Crete.
Many of our visitors appreciate the privacy and seclusion yet with 5 minute access to shops and tavernas, especially those who want complete relaxation. With a car the ancient city of Chania, the White Mountains and Roman Aptera are within easy reach, a winning combination for interesting excursions. Delighted you all enjoyed it.
Beautiful villa with amazing views
We stayed in Maiandros Villa for 10 nights in August 2019 with our two children aged 9 and 5. The villa was superb in every way: clean, modern, light and airy, spacious and with amazing views from all rooms. It was well appointed and stocked with all the small things you might need in a home from home. The bedrooms are large and you can guarantee a good sleep with blackout shutters and air conditioning. The pool is amazing with a wonderful view of the bay with its splendid sunsets from the pool terrace. There are lots of great family activities in the local area and further afield. All in all we would highly recommend this beautiful villa and hope to be back one day. The owner, Jeremy, was friendly and very helpful throughout.
We couldn't believe our luck in finding this 'million-dollar' view when we built the house. We spend many weeks a year in Maiandros ourselves so it's set up as our overseas home and for visitors to enjoy as well.
A large villa with stunning views and close to all amenties
Just come back from 10 days spent at this wonderful villa. Much larger than it looks in the photos this comfortably sleeps 6 people. Close to local shops and tavernas so if you really don't want to drive anywhere you don't have to. Communication with the owner was prompt and very accurate. Highly recommended.
A perfect villa.
We had a wonderful 9 days at this villa. It really was a peace of paradise. The villa is much bigger in real life than the pictures show, and is clean and has everything you need. Thee location of the villa is beautiful. It is at the end of a road so feels really private and the views are amazing. We didn't want to hire a car so got a taxi from the airport. The villa is in such a location you have everything you need, nice restaurants, a shop and the beach is 15 mins walk away. The walk back is rather steep and hot but we got a taxi often for 6 euros.Jumping straight into the pool was glorious.
We loved everything about this villa and wouldn't hesitate recommending it to anyone.
A lovely Villa with views to die for
The Villa was very well equipped, spotlessly clean, and very comfortable. The local restaurants were just a five minute walk away and the food very good and reasonably priced. We did quite a bit of 'self catering' as well and we found everything we needed, plus a few things we didn't, in the kitchen. The local butchers in Almirida was really good, the meat very fresh and reasonably priced. The local mini markets were also very good and we were able to get most things from there. The views from the Villa are just spectacular so eating out on the balcony was just wonderful. We had a few days of bad weather (unusual for this time of year) but because the Villa was so spacious and comfortable we didn't feel 'cooped up.' Jeremy was extremely helpful, he even rang the day before our flight to wish us a happy holiday. Thank you for sharing your little bit of paradise with us.
Thanks Cherie, it made me smile. Holiday times are precious and everything has to go well so it's very rewarding to read comments like these.
A lovely, self-catering hillside villa, Maiandros has stunning views from sea-facing balconies and terraces, looking west over the private pool, and set amongst woodland, yet only 5-minutes’ walk from Plaka village centre shops and tavernas. The coastal town of Almyrida is just 14 mins walk (or 1km), where there are more shops, tavernas, car hire and a sheltered bay with soft sandy beaches and sailing.
The villa, fully equipped to a very high standard for our own use, is built up high and cooled by prevailing winds through double and triple aspect windows, with mosquito screens in the bedrooms. There are fans and air conditioning in all three bedrooms.
The entrance leads into a huge open living area with views in all directions. The large family kitchen is equipped with all appliances. A wide staircase rises to an imposing gallery with more wonderful views.
Both main bedrooms overlook the private pool and Bay and have en-suite shower rooms. There is a large family bathroom and the third bedroom has views to the east over the shady rear garden cut into the rock. All bedrooms have private balconies and air conditioning.
Memorable evening views from the pool and roof terraces.
Crete has wonderful archaeological remains, most famous being those of the Minoans, Europe's oldest civilisations, with significant sites at Knossos near Haraklion and Phaestos.
Aptera only 15 minutes by car from Maiandros has spectacular Roman remains, especially huge water cisterns and an amphitheatre. The site is still being actively excavated.
Exploring Crete by car is very rewarding for its extraordinary variety of scenery, from fertile coastal plains with olive and orange groves, to deep craggy gorges with evidence of its violent geological past.
Set off with no real plan and enjoy old-fashioned Greek hospitality wherever you go.
There are guide books and maps in the book case.
