Quiet spot in old neighborhood
authentic accommodations in the old neighborhood of Alfama in Lisbon. Amazing views, walking distance to everything- train station, restaurants, historic sites. Quiet spot in bustling neighborhood. There are many narrow steep steps to get to the building and then in to the apartment- but this is typical for this area. We loved our stay.
Excellent, as always !!!
Great Apartment and Great Host, what more can you say?
Handy for Metro & Trains, reliable internet in the best part of Lisbon.
Looking forward to returning next year
Perfect Lisbon Immersion
Spent 7 nights in this charming place in the Alfama, with rooftop and cathedral views, small terrace overlooking the river, clean and comfortable interior with excellent kitchen and bath. Lots of stairs but that is part of the immersion. Very close to public transportation, trains and metro, uber and taxis, nearby winding streets with several excellent restaurants within minutes. We loved waking up there, out all day, and coming home to something far more interesting and special than any hotel. Ana was great, good advice, prompt replies. Hightly recommended.
3 nights in September
Brilliant location. Balcony a must as the evening views in particular were stunning. Overlooked by luxury liners docking but that added to the interest. Lots of stairs (we were prepared as you don't do Lisbon if you are not fit) but roomier than we thought it would be. Host was extremely engaging and helpful with good English. Only two small issues - the front door lock was sometimes a bit difficult and one side of the bed was not easy to access with a morning cup of tea due to the sloping roof.
Intimate little cabin in the sky
Great view of the cruise ships when they docked . The roof deck is as high as the top of the ships!
A private miradouro in enchanting Alfama
We spent the last week of our Portugal trip in this apartment, and it was the perfect finale. Staying here was a joy.
Things got off to an inauspicious start: we couldn’t find the place. Even Google maps was stymied. But then Ana, our lovely host, came out to meet us on the street and brought us ‘home’.
There’s two ways to access the building: straight up via very steep stairs from a main road, or zig-zagging up the hill on side streets full of cafes, shops, and residences. We came to love those side streets. Many are pedestrian-only, and some householders have turned them into garden alleys with potted plants along the sides.
The description of the apartment on the Vrbo website doesn’t begin to do it justice. It’s a split level, encompassing the entire 3rd and 4th floors (that’s 4th and 5th to North Americans – yes, many stairs!) of a narrow building. The Alfama neighbourhood is dense, with buildings very close together, but since the apartment is so high up, it’s full of light and air, with fantastic views in three directions. There are windows everywhere – I counted eleven.
The crowning touch, as other reviewers have mentioned, is the tiny balcony at the very top, looking out over the rooftops to the river and beyond. Your own private miradouro, perfect for a glass of vinho verde at sunset.
But there’s much more. The living room, furnished for functionality and comfort, has a Juliette balcony – and excellent WiFi. It was nice to have a dedicated kitchen – again with an enormous window. Ditto for the bathroom, which is wonderfully bright and spacious. Great water pressure, lots of hot water. And everything spotlessly clean.
The showpiece is the bedroom, which presides over the entire top floor (with walkout to that wonderful terrace). Ana told us a previous owner was a sailor, and it shows. Like the interior of a fine yacht, the bedroom is panelled in gleaming wood. Every inch of space is accounted for. Everything fits and everything works. It’s a thing of beauty. And windows everywhere.
The apartment is just a few minutes’ walk to Santa Apolónia train station (where there’s a great supermarket) and the metro, and not far from the Pantheon, Castelo de São Jorge, Fado Museum (must-see!), José Saramago Museum, and many fado clubs, bars and restaurants.
Our communications with Ana in the lead-up to our stay were a pleasure, and in person she was the perfect host: responsive, knowledgeable and helpful. Five star all the way.
Alfama is one of Lisbon’s most typical and old neighbourhoods. It goes from the São Jorge’s castle until the Tagus River. It’s distinguished by its narrow streets, populated by small buildings, churches, nooks and small squares that survived the 1755 earthquake.
In this neighbourhood where modernity and tradition coexist, there are several belvederes with the most amazing views over Lisbon and the Tagus River. In almost every corner the Fado can be heard and seen. There are many restaurants serving delicious traditional food. To dive into Lisbon’s history, the São Jorge’s castle, the cathedrals, the monasteries, the chapels and the various ruins should be visited. Culture is also very present through the museums, the live-music pubs, the art galleries, the theatres and the book shops that you can go to.
All this is what you can see only in the Alfama’s neighbourhood. Can you imagine how much is there to see in Lisbon? Come and find it for yourself! We would be delighted to welcome you!
