This House Survived The Great Storm Of 1900 Being Just Three Years Old!

The house has seen The Storm of 1900 and Hurricanes Carla and Ike and survived beautifully! Built in 1897 by Capt. Lewis Best, the same man that built the house on the corner, moved from where the garage now stands to the front of the lot and added on to several times. The gourmet kitchen was redone after Ike and now shines with new cabinets, granite countertops and stainless appliances. New pots and pans and you are off cooking for your family in a wonderful environment but wait, there are so many great restaurants and bakeries in walking distance! The home is a block away from The Mosquito Cafe and Pattycakes Bakery and close to the Sunflower Cafe and its bakery and also The Original Mexican Cafe. The house is a two story home with a newly redone bathroom downstairs and a clawfoot tub, full bathroom upstairs. The house has charming old moldings and pocket doors to the master bedroom. The couch in the downstairs living room opens up to a sleeper as does the upstairs' love-seat in the sitting area. There is also a great new twin bed on the back, enclosed porch. Full of antiques and the newest ductless split systems, the house has the best of old and new. Tastefully decorated and a joy to get closer to Galveston's East End. An evening walk in an awesome residential neighborhood awaits. Coffee on the deck is a great start to your adventure. If you book for four nights, the price will be edited so that one weeknight rental is free!

The cottage is blocks away from the beach/seawall, the harbor, UTMB and the vibrant Strand area. Your adventure could be a day at the beach or a day exploring the Strand with its Railroad Museum, The Elissa and great shops. The house is close to The Cruise Terminal and The Bishop's Palace. You can enjoy a variety of tours and shows, but everyone likes to eat! All areas of Galveston boast seafood restaurants comparable to none. Your adventure could be a day exploring Murdoch's Bath House and Galveston's newest Pleasure Pier. You could journey off and have a short drive to Moody Gardens, The Lone Star Flight Museum or Schlitterbahn. But don't forget to reserve time to relax and enjoy the house, the deck out back, the family/friends you are with and the pet-friendly yard. Sit in the double rocker on the front porch and enjoy the breeze or wave to the tours that go right by the house. The house has three TV's, two being smart flat screens and the house has free wifi for you to enjoy. There are books, games, and a washer and dryer to keep you going. Whatever you do, you will want to come back again and again to do other things, or the same ones again!

About Roberta and Neal Thornton

We are former school administrators who have been volunteering for Dickens on the Strand and the GHF Home Tour and have fallen in love with the town. We have always been frequent tourists here and used to run many fun runs here with our sons and enjoy the attractions from the old days when Sea Arama was here! Our middle son surprised us (well not really) and graduated from Texas A&M Galveston. Our Naval Academy sons had their annual Military Ball moved to Moody Gardens here, more entrenching us in Galveston.

We just had to be a semi-permanent resident but it is hard right now with living in Liberty and my husband in his second career as a middle school teacher at a private school in Beaumont. This gives us an excuse to continue our ties with Galveston and start on our next career!

We chose this home because of its great location in a safe, historical neighborhood. We love to eat (perfect town) and I love to shop (again, perfect town) and we love Texas history and beautiful old homes. We also love the laid-back energy of the town. Did I say the word love enough? Going on cruises several times has shown us Galveston is a great town with a winning combination. Oh, and the beach is great and I plan to walk to the beach with my dogs and enjoy them like I have always wanted!

Memorial Day Weekend Vacation

Roberta & Neal were very informative, friendly, and made staying at their place an absolute breeze. The house is in a great location. It was a block away from a few of our favorite restaurants and we walked to the Strand every day we were there. It was a big, cozy house. We felt at home in Galveston!

Amazing

This house was simply charming. When I walked through the front door my mind traveled back in time. I was so happy to see that the owners had written about the history of the house.

It's is very close to the strand, but not far away from the sea wall.

Plenty of towels for our group of four. We will definitely be staying at this house again the next time we take a trip to Galveston.

Easy stay!

We were lucky to get this house during Mardi Gras! We had a fantastic time! The kitchen was well equipped, and every thing was clean! What became important to me was feeling safe. We originally booked this for my family of 4. Due to a last minute emergency, my husband was unable to attend, so it was just myself and my 12yo daughter there for a gymnastics competition. We both felt really comfortable there, very safe and relaxed. I loved having the door code and not having to keep up with keys. Wish we could have stayed longer. Word of caution, if you stay here during Mardi Gras, know the parade schedules and street closures so you can make a plan in advance. The sea wall is really close (walking distance for the adventurous!).

PERFECT !!!

We were there for the month of April 2016. We brought our bikes to ride on the seawall and when we got out to ride we realize how great the location was to go everywhere! We rode to the Harbor, Strand and to the seawall for restaurants - walked to either the Sunflower Cafe and Bakery, Misquito Cafe and The Orginsl Mexican Restaurant. Roberta and Neal stopped by and left us a gift and responded immediately to any questions we had. We drank coffee each morning on the front porch which our cat loved as he lounged with us. The street is very quite and the neighbor were friendly. It was a beautiful area to walk and see the Historical homes. Excellent information is in the house to help you learn about the history of Galveston and what is available to see and do. The house is very charming and comfortable - just as pictures show. We highly recommend the Orginial East End Rental Cottage.

Great house +

First time staying in East End, what a pleasant surprise. First, location is terrific. Very interesting neighborhood. Quiet and convenient. Restaurants, shops, and even the Strand w/in walking distance. Beaches are close by. Second, the house is extremely well-appointed and sparkling clean. Fully equipped kitchen and laundry. Furnishings were nice. Having outdoor space a plus, too. Owners are very easy to work with. They have a comprehensive set of arrival instructions, so we knew where everything was, how it worked (e.g. wifi, front door lock, parking) by the time we arrived. We had one question during the stay and received an immediate answer.

Highly recommended, and would stay here again.

Perfect home away from home

Owners were amazingly responsive, providing tons of info on everything we could possibly need.

The house is fantastic and beautifully decorated. It is within walking distance to a couple of good breakfast spots. We stayed here for Dickens on the Strand and actually walked down to the festivities instead of paying to park.

We would definitely stay here again and would recommend to friends and family.

This cottage is a 1900 storm survivor and oozes history. After Ike the house was totally re-done to your advantage. It has a gourmet kitchen with all new stainless appliances. The house sleeps eight with two bedrooms and two living room/sitting areas and a twin bed on the enclosed back porch. All bedding and mattresses are new as well as state of the art LG ductless split systems. There are two full baths, one which has a clawfoot tub!

The location is the best among the best on The Island! Blocks away from great restaurants, shops and bakeries. Close to history and a few blocks away from the beach, The Strand area, UTMB and the harbor. Former residents include ship captains and dock workers.

Area attractions such as Moody Gardens, Schlitterbahn, The Lone Star Flight Museum are within a short driving distance but area attractions such as The Bishop's Palace and other historic homes, The Elissa and The Railroad Museum are within walking/bike riding distance.
