This is one bedroom with a private bath. It is on ground level, we live upstairs. The room is very large and has a king size bed and bunk beds with a sitting area.
We are in a secluded area so it is peaceful, but we are close enough to the highway that getting to all the island activities will be easy. Breakfast is included and will be made specifically for your needs and desires. I bake gluten and dairy free and can also make vegan selections.
You will have access to Dish TV, internet, hair dryer, microwave, coffee pot, toaster, refrigerator, washer and dryer.
We will be happy to suggest any of the wonderful activities that are available around the island.
We are located about half way between Kailua Kona and Hilo. Kula Kai Caverns, South Point, Punaluu Bakery, Green Sand Beach, Black Sand Beach, and Volcanoes National Park are all relatively close.
Over 40 years ago I was diagnosed allergic to wheat, dairy, and onion. Now it is difficult to find gluten free foods, back then it was almost impossible.
I taught school on the mainland for 35 years. The last 13 year were spent teaching science lab to 4th and 5th graders. Many of the items on this island were topics I taught.
Sandy Stovall purchased this house in 2013
This home gave me a chance to share the gluten free foods that I have learned to create.
We loved staying at the Gluten Free House. The location was perfect for us to explore Captain Cook and snorkel at Two Steps, drive down to South Point, Green Sands, and see the turtles at Punalu'u. The room was spacious and very comfortable for the four of us. We slept so well every night! Sandy and Andy were lovely hosts, and we are so grateful for the generous, delicious and thoughtfully prepared gluten-free, vegan breakfasts they served every morning. Mahalo for a wonderful stay! We hope to return one day.
We enjoyed our 11 night stay at the Gluten Free House on the Big Island of Hawaii in March, 2016. It is on the southern end of the island, about half way between Hilo and Kona. We thought it would be perfect, as it would allow us to explore the whole area, both ways, while staying in one spot. Do realize, though, that you have to drive two-lane windy and crooked roads to get from here to popular tourist destinations and beaches. If you are alright with that, and if you want seclusion and quiet, then stay here. The location did make us get out and explore the island, however. If we had stayed at a city location, we would have never driven this far out, or discovered all the "local" beaches and sights.
The Aloha room was great; nice big bed and bathroom, along with outdoor kitchen and washer and dryer. Sandy and her husband were always helpful with information and directions. The breakfast she served every day was over-the-top, with a different PERFECT GF bread and tropical fruit each time, in addition to the meat and eggs. Her homemade syrup is delicious! Breakfast held us over until about 2, when we finally grabbed a light lunch. The breakfast alone is a good reason to stay here, gluten free or not.
Sandy has a notebook full of places to see and eat on the south side. I would note that there aren't a lot of places to eat out around here, and not a lot of gluten free choices. If you are planning on romantic evenings with cocktails and gourmet meals, all dressed up, well, there aren't many close places to go! You will have to travel to the Kona or Hilo area to find these. You can, however, cook your own meals, with groceries available at a store a few miles down the road. Some gluten free items available there, also. Everything in the kitchen that you might need to prepare your own meals. And Sandy does the dishes!
The Gluten Free House is a great value, especially with the outstanding breakfasts and comfy room. We would highly recommend it.
Sandy and Andy were very kind and prepared to host us. There is a binder she has made up that was very helpful with both house rules and ideas for where to shop, eat, and explore. The bed was very comfortable, we slept great. The food was fantastic! I'm GF and the food was delicious, varied, and beautiful! We would definitely stay there again given the opportunity to return to Hawaii.

Firstly I'd like to say. Thank you to Sandy and her husband for the lovely accommodations they've provided on each our visits to Oceanview. My husband and I have felt at home since the very first visit out to their beautiful property at the base of Aloha Drive.
What I can share on this review is how it always feels like a home away from home .... truely. Every morning at about 7:30am a beautiful breakfast was provided for my husband and I. Sandy is always on time. The breakfast which is complimentary is always fresh and delicious! A fully equipped kitchen to our disposal with a refrigerator, washer and dryer. Is always a big plus for me when traveling. As mentioned we have visited on more than on occasion. So we have had the opportunity to stay at the ALOHA ROOM which is our absolute FAVORITE! As well as another unit which is a 2 bedroom a little further down the road. The properties are very very clean. And the garden .... the flowers truely a conversational piece in itself. After our first visit my husband and I will never stay at a hotel again. It feels good to be able to cook while we are visiting in Kona and also to be able to wash our laundry before leaving in the privacy of our own area to avoid having to fly home after a week long vacation to unpack dirty laundry. Sandy and her husband are the kindest owners of any vacation rental that we've ever visited and gave us total privacy on our down time when we would return to the room. Because I am preparing this review on my cell phone I'm trying to squish in how wonderful your experience will be. As for me and my family we are absolutely in love with the accommodations and will return! I hope the pictures I provide and this review will help you in deciding. Just contact Sandy. She is very easy to talk with and very very helpful.
Sandy thank you for excepting our last minute request for our Christmas stay! Your awesome! We'll see you soon!
Aloha, Don & Mere (honolulu)
Heaven. Waking up taking our little boy for a walk in the garden. Eating a delicious breakfast with fresh fruit. Making coffee to start our day. SLEEPING on a heavenly bed. The best ceiling fans to keep the fresh air moving. The aloha room just feels so clean. Thank You to our host- we will recommend your glutein free house to others.
Since we are rural, it takes longer than 15 minutes to get to many of the attractions, but included in the available activities are hiking, deep sea fishing, parasailing, surfing, snorkeling, diving, kayaking, jet skiing, submarine ride, horseback riding, and atv riding. There are chocolate farm tours, mushroom farm tours, macadamia farm tours, a zoo, botanical gardens, water falls, and farmer's markets just to name a few of the things to do.
