Guestbook comments from the manager

Love the Alii and this unit, although the bathrooms could use an upgrade the unit fit our needs perfectly. All the beds are brand new (they delivered during our stay and they are awesome!) The views are spectacular and love the big lanai - too bad they won't let you have a bbq on the lanai though. We would stay in this unit again ~ the price is unbelievable for what you get. Kitchen is loaded with more than you need and we liked the beach chairs and toys for the kids. Love the floor plan - huge unit. We've always stayed at the Hyatt so these units are a fabulous value! Thank you we'll be back!S

Not terrible, but not the best experience

  • 2 of 5

The size of the unit was perfect! The decor is great! Lots of bath towels and basics like toilet paper, garbage bags, etc.

But several things were not quite fabulous. First, the kitchen pans are TERRIBLE. The dishwasher latch is very tricky to close and takes several minutes to figure it out. Many dishes still came out dirty with coffee drips and grease. The carpet was pretty stained and worn. There was only 2 patio chairs with the table. Kind of hard for a family to dine on the lanai. I had read a review about this issue and someone said this issue was resolved. Unfortunately, workers arrived toward the end of our stay with a new patio set and we had to sit in the room for over an hour waiting for them to assemble it. (This was the second time we were inconvenienced by a worker bringing up owner goods...on day 2, a worker came up with a bunch of boxes he needed to store in the owner closets. We were told he would be there at 10:30. He showed up at 11:15 and then had no idea how to pack the oversized items. We had to forfeit more beach time to help him reorganize the closets and make it work.)

Something we did not know...You have no Ali’i amenities with this unit. No towels at the pool, no bell hop/carts or luggage help, no cleaning or room services.

We have stayed at the Ali’i before and we love the complex.

However, the staff this time around was very cold. We definitely felt like we were not so welcome. Our kids were told they could not toss a soft ball in the pool, yet other people were with no reprimand. I brought a bottle of champagne (contained in a cooler-never touching the ground or table and I used a plastic flute!) to the pool chair at the adult pool. I was told A guest complained (in the first 10 minutes I was there because you could not have glass by the pool.) I get that...which is why I was drinking out of plastic. But I didn’t understand why all the folks around me were mixing mai tais with multiple glass liquor bottles around me with no issues?!

I will probably stay at the Ali’i again but will book through them. I will not use VRBO or a private rental sector here.

In need of updating

  • 3 of 5

We were disappointed in the condition of this condo. It is tired, the carpets are dirty and worn, the balcony had only two chairs (for a condo that sleeps 8!), the kitchen is poorly equipped. Two pretty awful things happened during our stay...first, the large plastic cover on one of the bathroom ceiling lights came crashing down onto my friend's head and arm causing injury. Second, water was coming down through the bathroom ceiling which was determined to be caused by a leaking toilet in the condo above us. GROSS! To the credit of the property manager, both items were addressed quickly, but these events should have never happened in the first place. We would not recommend this particular unit to friends or family.

Owner's Response: I am sorry for the inconveniences you experienced during your stay in our unit. Your arrival came as the same day as a guest departure who overstayed beyond the usual check out time period. Unfortunately it did not allow for us to have the carpets cleaned in time for your arrival. Although our staff should have made arrangements with you to allow this to get done, perhaps on day you planned to be out and about on island. Your report of the missing lanai chairs was news to us all and I can assure you this will be corrected with a brand new set within a few days. We were notified of your report of a ceiling diffuser falling out of the frame. Although I know it was addressed it is still a mystery of how it became unlodged and fell on your guest as all the clips were still in tact. Our kitchen inventory was just restocked during the Christmas holiday and in fact we carry more kitchenware than is required by the regular standards at our property. We wished you had let us know during your visit what if anything was missing and we would have been happy to get the items to you the same day. We have scheduled an new inventory check on the kitchen amenities to be certain. As for the leak from the above unit however unfortunate I'm glad to hear it was remedied in a timely manner. Thank you for your helpful comments and we hope that you might give us an opportunity to prove to you that this was the exception to the rule.

Spacious and comfortable

  • 5 of 5

This was our second trip to Maui and our second time staying at the Alii. We looked around but couldn't find another location that gave us what we wanted for the price we wanted. The condo is very comfortable and roomy. We stayed with two adults, three teens and a tween and everyone could spread out. The condo is well outfitted with bath towels, pool towels, pans & dishes, and boogie boards. We like the Alii because it isn't overcrowded and has a low key vibe. This time we took advantage of the grills out by the pool twice and really enjoyed that amenity. We would definitely stay here again.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your overwhelmingly positive review, Kat. You hit the nail on the head. The Alii really holds on the the Hawaiian low-key, laid-back vibe that you don't get at some of the other circus-like resorts. It was our pleasure having you as a guest. Please do return in the future.

Excellent Choice for 3Bdrm View

  • 5 of 5

We very much enjoyed our recent stay in this unit. Overall, it is a nice and comfortable unit. Considering the price difference from going through Classic Resorts, it is an excellent value for anyone looking for a 3bdrm with a view, in a prime Kaanapali location, on a excellent part of the beach, with a nice resort pool.

Kaanapali Alii Fantastic- Room so-so

  • 3 of 5

We have stayed at the Alii three previous times and always booked directly with the resort. We just returned from six nights at this unit and the results were a mixed bag. First, the positives. Renting this unit from VRBO saved us a little under $200 a night over the standard resort price so all comments need to be viewed in that light. Second, the Alii is a magnificent property. Un-crowded, and beautiful. The unit has great views. The shower heads are terrific (coming from low flow California). The floor plan spacious.

The third bedroom was great as there were six of us in the unit. Now, the negatives. First the unit looks "tired" This is a 3 million dollar condo and the sectional sofa has a board stuck in it to keep its occupants upright. My wife ended up putting beach towels over the couch before she would sit on it. The walls need a fresh coat of paint and the carpet is old. Just updating the unit in these areas would make a world of difference.

Lastly, the unit next door had major renovations going on all during our stay. The hallway was full of drop cloths that we had to walk through each day. Our final day, we came home after a half day sail ready to nap and we were treated to 5 straight hours of incredibly loud drilling on the common wall. It was so bad I knocked on their door and asked what they were doing. They were hanging wonder board on the wall for tile. I called the Beachfront rentals to see if they knew about the renovation as the tile guy said the renovation had been going on for weeks. Beachfront said they didn't know and there was nothing to be done. That is the downside of not renting through the resort. You can't complain to them or change rooms.

We just got home from here.. .stayed 5 nights in this wonderful condo... it was spacious and roomy... THE shower was AMAZING... great water pressure. I think the only complaint we all had was the 3 chairs at the table on the lanai... weird... there should be at least 4, but with a condo sleeping 6-8 I'm thinking a table for 6 would be best... We ate out there every night. I loved the pool area, great for a toddler.. the people at the pool were very friendly. We ended our stay at Honua Kai, I will be back to KA for sure!

Owner's Response: Thank your kind review, Kara. It always makes us happy when we satisfy the needs of our guest. We'll look into getting another chair placed out on the lanai. Thanks for being our guest. We'd love to see you again.
