About the property

3 Bedroom, 2 Bath Home On An Oceanside Canal With 24' Dock Space.

Welcome to Betty’s Place on Treasure Cove, where peace and tranquility are the order of the day. Conveniently located off U.S. Hwy 1, with local grocery, pharmacy and discount department stores only 2 miles up the road, and within walking distance (2 blocks/450 steps) of Sombrero Beach, Betty’s Place is the perfect location for retirees who wish to take a break from the cold winter months.

Located on a canal with easy access to the Atlantic Ocean, Betty’s Place has a comfortable and cozy atmosphere and easy layout. This updated 3-bedroom, 2-bath, single story home sleeps 6 and has sliding glass doors that open out onto a back deck where the sights and sounds of everyday life disappear and all you hear are the sounds of nature.

The master bedroom has a king bed and separate bath with an over-sized shower that includes a bench seat. The two guestrooms have queen beds and one has a desk for workspace needs. The house also comes with a queen-sized pillow-top air mattress. A second bath (with tub/shower combo) is shared between the two guestrooms.

The kitchen is fully equipped with an oven & stove-top, refrigerator, dishwasher, microwave, coffee maker, toaster and blender, as well as silverwear & cooking utensils, dishes, pots and pans. A small table for 2 sits off the kitchen and there is a table in the dining room that seats 6. A separate laundry room with a full size washer and dryer is located off the kitchen.

The house also comes with satellite TV, Hi-Speed Internet and WiFi, a Blu-Ray Disc player and a CD/Cassette player. Books, DVD's, puzzles and games are also available.

Enjoy sitting on the back deck in the afternoon, sipping a nice glass of iced tea or wine, hearing the fish jump and seeing the many species of birds and other wildlife that live here. There is also up to 24' of dock space available, along with a ladder and steps that lead to the canal.

NEW THIS YEAR! We now have a fish cleaning station located near the canal on the back left side of the house. Easy hookup to water using the hose and bowls, buckets and a knife to help you clean your catch.

Sombrero Beach, only 450 steps away (yes, we counted!), offers a volleyball court, pier, white sand beach, swimming and snorkeling, grills, playground and shade gazebos. A great place to spend your day or to take in a beautiful sunrise.

The house comes with parking for 3 cars and one boat trailer.

Key West is a 1 hour drive, Islamorada is a 45 minute drive, and Miami Airport is approximately a 2 1/4 hour drive.

About Suzanne & Hank Lander

I inherited this home in July of 2007 after my mother passed away. My husband and I live outside of Orlando and aren't quite ready yet for retirement. My mom loved living here and thought it was paradise and we knew she would enjoy us sharing that with others. For more on my mom, whom the house is named after, read below.

Suzanne & Hank Lander purchased this house in 2007

Why Suzanne & Hank Lander chose Marathon Area

Betty's Place is named in honor of my mom, Elizabeth 'Betty' Vail, who lived here for over 20 years. A woman born before her time (she was born in 1918), she is listed in the Who's Who of American Women for being the first woman to manage a regional airport in the U.S. and she received many awards and accolades over the years for her work with the Marathon Chamber of Commerce, the Marathon Airport, and the Marathon Economic Development Council, to name a few. She was also very involved with local politics and served for 8 years as treasurer for one of Monroe County's Commissioners. Out of all the awards Betty received throughout her life, there were two that meant more to her than anything. She was made an 'Honorary Conch' by Wilhelmina Harvey, the first woman mayor of the Florida Keys; and she was also made an 'Honorary Mayor' of Marathon by Mayor John Bartus in 2006.

Betty loved the 'Fabulous Florida Keys', as she referred to them, and she was very involved with the Heart of the Keys Tourism Association, serving as co-chair of the Public Relations committee.

Betty enjoyed sitting on her back deck with her daughter and granddaughter, enjoying the peace and tranquility the Keys has to offer and she would be happy to know that others are getting to enjoy this little piece of paradise.

What makes this house unique

Location is what sets this house apart. Situated on the inside end of a canal, this house is only 2 blocks (450 steps - yes we counted!) to the beach and only 2 miles to local shopping and dining (also walkable!) A back deck provides peace and tranquility while enjoying the sights and sounds of nature (hear and see fish jumping, watch pelicans dive for fish, see Manatees and more). The house has over-sized sliding glass doors that lead from the living room to the back deck, providing beautiful views to the canal.

great weather, great location

  • 5 of 5

The weather was gorgeous and tropical. It never dropped below 78 F at night. The a/c in the house was very nice. The location of the house, just a couple blocks from Sombrero Beach, was great for us. You could put a stand up paddle board (SUP) in at the canal at the back of the house, and especially if the wind was blowing the correct direction, which it often was, once out of the canal you could surf over to Sombrero Beach by SUP in about 15 minutes, then go on to explore the mangrove mazes of Whiskey Creek on Boot Key. The owner was helpful and quick to respond to any questions!

Owner's Response: Glad to hear that you and your guests enjoyed your stay and appreciate you letting others know how easy it is to navigate the canal on a paddle board. Many guests have also kayaked up the canal and over to Boot Key to see the beauty and wildlife of the Keys. Winter in the Keys is beautiful and temps usually stay in the 70's - a great place to get away from the cold winters!

Great and Comfortable Family Vacation Home

  • 5 of 5

Thank you for sharing your wonderful home with us. My daughters and I had a girl week that was filled with kayaking, fishing and lots of relaxing at Sombrero Beach. This was a wonderful vacation and great home to share our memories together. Kayaking right off the dock around to the ocean and beach was wonderful. Anyone who enjoys the Keys will love staying her. See you next year!

Wonderful Place.

  • 5 of 5

Location, Location, Location! Best spot for relaxing, fishing, and water sports. 1 minute to Atlantic and 5 minutes to the gulf. Fishing right in the back yard. Caught sharks, Mangrove Snappers, and Tarpons right in our canal. A lot of space for our 27 ft World Cat boat. The house was very clean and had all the utensils you need for cooking. We will definitely be back next year.

Perfect base camp for a fishing trip or family vacation

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the property for a week long fishing trip. The location was fantastic and the house was a good place to relax after a day on the water. We did have an issue with the air conditioning when we arrived, but the owners were responsive and immediately called in service to fix the problem. The three of us agreed that we would stay there again.
