This little cottage sits under a mighty Black Oak on a quiet street in downtown Hermann. The guest house will be all yours, and will fit up to 4 guests. We are in the heart of historic wine country, with many wineries and breweries close by. Hermann was founded by a German group in the early 1830's and most of the buildings are still standing and remain vital today. There are shops, museums, restaurants, and more attractions. The house has 2 bedrooms upstairs with queen size beds that share a newly remodeled bathroom. It has central air and heat, and a completely stocked kitchen and bbq grill should you choose to eat in. The living room is equipped with a satellite flat screen TV, games, movies and CDS. You will be provided a delicious coffee cake and fruit. Coffee and teas are onsite. Even popcorn is there for you to snack on. The house is decorated in an electic country cottage style, with hardwood floors throughout, and many antiques, and creative décor. The yard is full of seasonal flowers, and herbs. We provide you with scissors and bags to cut them for your dining. Relax in the hammock and listen to the church bells nearby or walk this safe charming little town and see our many local attractions. We take reservations by phone, for your security. Please call us at 573-486-1519
We are artists and sign designers that do many of the local signs. We also run an antique shop with many unusual items and gifts. We have 4 children between us, some in Kansas City, and St. Louis. Our grandkids love to visit us here to enjoy the town and all it has to offer. We are only 3 blocks from our guest house, so if anything was needed, we are close by to help. We pride ourselves in service and cleanliness. We offer many ammenities other guest houses don't. Many of the decorations are from local artists and are for sale, they will have a small price tag on them, just let us know you are interested!
Tom & Kathy Durham purchased this cottage in 2013
This guest house gives you the privacy you won't have in a hotel or typical B & B. We are situated on a quiet residential street, 1 block from the main street in town, with all the shops within a few blocks. You won't ever be renting with another group, and if just one or two of you want to rent the whole house, you can! We have special rates during the week, and military discounts! We reserve most weekends for a 2 night stay, however in the off season, or last minute booking we can sometimes do 1 night..preferably on a friday night.
We love this house, since it is loaded with charm, and has been restored at the same time. The stairs are unique corner stairs, with the original 1895 handrail that curves. The windows are all original with wavy glass too! The beautiful tall windows and ceilings add to the quaintness. We love to garden, so you can walk our gardens and see our cute shed. A croquet set is available, and a patio set with umbrella for outside dining. Sip coffee in the back patio on the country bench in the morning, smell the lavendar growing, watch the birds and butterflys. In growing sesason, we encourage you to pick a tomato or pepper or two to have ...we also provide sheers to cut herbs and use in your cooking. Parking is curbside, but only 10 feet away. Come visit our little piece of Heaven in Hermann MO!
Five of us recently stayed at the Black Oak Inn over a 3 day weekend in October to celebrate our year of turning 30. It was our first trip to Hermann, and we couldn't have been more happy with the house!
It is more spacious than it appears in the photos. We slept two per bedroom upstairs and one on the couch in the living room. There was an extra fee for out 5th person, but there are sheets, blankets and pillows provided for the couch.
There is only one bathroom, but we also used the kitchen to get ready and it worked out fine. There are plenty of towels and washcloths provided. Two or three can easily get ready in the bathroom at the same time. It's recently been renovated and is super cute. The whole house is cute and spotless!
Kathy had fruit and homemade pastries at the house. The kitchen is also stocked with all the basics: coffee/creamer, tea, oils, spices, plates, pots, pans, etc....
We enjoyed our morning coffee on the new back patio. There is patio furniture, a grill and fire pit, cute gardens, and feels pretty secluded. They are planning to fence the back yard in eventually.
If you come in on the train, plan on being picked up to get to the house. But once you're bags are at the house it's within walking distance of the two main streets, Schiller and 1st street. We used Rhine Valley Shuttle Service to pick us up from the train and also to drive us on a winery tour. Plan to book them a week ahead on a busy weekend.
Be sure to visit the owner's (Tom and Kathy) shop on Schiller Street, Type Style Signs, Antiques & Gifts! It's super cute!
We loved staying at the Black Oak Inn and plan to book again in the future. This was perfect for a girls trip and there was plenty of room for the 4 of us. We loved the privacy, the full kitchen, separate dining room, the back patio, large shower, etc. As previous reviews mentioned, the breakfast was great and there were plenty of towels, which is definitely appreciated. The window AC units did a great job keeping things cool in the bedrooms. If you have trouble with stairs, you may want to be cautious when walking on them as they are typical for this style of home (a little steep), but we didn't have any problems! We loved the look of the cottage and that it was so clean. We definitely felt at home! Check in/out was easy as the location to pick up the key was only a couple of blocks away. The cottage was within walking distance to shops, restaurants, and Hermannhoff. We also took the Hermann Trolley which picked us up/dropped us off right at the door. The trolley will take you to several wineries/restaurants throughout the area and the typical wait time was 15-30 min. We would definitely recommend the Black Oak Inn to friends and family!
Black Oak Inn was a lovely place both inside and outside. The place was clean, open, we loved the decor! Every time you turned around you saw something else that was adorable. The kitchen was well equipped with plenty of room, continental breakfast delicious pastry, coffee and fresh fruit. Newly remodeled bathroom upstairs, we had 4 women with one bathroom and all ended up fine! The 2 bedrooms were also upstairs with their own air-conditioning window units, bed were very comfortable. We spent time outside in the garden both morning and evening, beautiful setting. There was a grill outside as well but there are such good restaurants in Hermann we could not imagine passing those up. This house is easy walking distance to downtown shops and restaurants. We bought a Trolley unlimited pass for Saturday ($20, 10 am to 10 pm, they will pick you up at this house and drop you off), we did not get into the car from Friday when we arrived until Sunday afternoon when we left!
My wife and I just returned from a weekend getaway to Hermann to celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary. I picked the Black Oak Inn Guest House for the added privacy of a whole house rental. We have stayed at traditional Bed and Breakfasts before and prefer this type of rental over those because we don't have to worry about being up too late or too early and possibly disturbing other guests if we are up walking around on the old squeaky wooden floors or talking too loudly. Even though we had the house to ourselves for the whole weekend, the owner did stock it with a very nice, large danish, a big bowl of fruit, juice and coffee prior to our arrival, which I thought was very nice.
The thing that struck me immediately upon arriving at the house is how much bigger it was than I had imagined. The first floor consists of a front family room, a dining room, a spacious kitchen and a small room that looked like it would be used for reading or playing a board game. Upstairs there are two large bedrooms, each with a Queen bed. There is also a nicely renovated bathroom on the second floor with the bedrooms. All rooms were expertly decorated with antiques and interesting local art and period photographs. Outside there is a nice backyard with a patio, fire pit and a large garden. It was too hot for us to spend any time outside but we enjoyed the multiple flower vases around the house that had clearly been filled with flowers clipped from the home's own garden.
We arrived on a Friday around 3:00pm and didn't need to move our car again until it was time to leave on Sunday at 11:00am. Hermannhof winery, the brewery in town, and dozens of shops and restaurants were all within 4-5 blocks walking distance. There is a trolley system you can use if you want to visit some of the other wineries sprinkled around the hills surrounding Hermann, but we found plenty to do just in town.
I recommend the Black Oak Inn to anyone looking for a quiet, romantic getaway, but it would also be perfect for two couples looking to visit Hermann together since it does have two bedrooms. I would be nervous bringing my small kids there because of all the antiques but Kathy did mention to me that they do allow children. There is certainly plenty of space for everyone to spread out in the house.
We had a group of 4 girls for a weekend getaway, and the Black Oak Inn was even better than we could have imagined! The house is immaculately clean and is decorated perfectly with rustic décor to compliment the ambiance of small town charm. We were easy walking distance to the main street of Hermann, and the trolley was even able to pick us up and drop us off right at the house! We had plenty of room, and the kitchen was stocked with everything we could need. Tom and Kathy were so nice to work with, which made our check-in and check-out a breeze. Make sure you check out their store before you go home - you can tell where they get their great eye for vintage/antique décor!
We arrived as a group of four to celebrate a birthday. The accommodations were perfect: plenty of space, the patio and firepit were picturesque. The pictures do this no justice. When first walking in we were all in awe of the atomsphere and the new-age feel of the vintage/rustic decor. Tom and Kathy did a great job making this house feel like a home away from home; they were friendly and full of radiance! We would recommend this place to anyone ready for a relaxing time in this charming town.
