About Rachel and Steve

Hello we are Rachel and Steve, your hosts and very proud owners of Casitas Del Rio.

Having both retired early (Rachel as an Education and Training Officer and Steve as a Sports and Recreational Manager), we were searching for our next big adventure. We both love meeting new people, hearing their interesting stories and having new experiences. In our personal life and careers we travelled to many places around the world and dreamed of finding the perfect place to settle down and combine our interest in people and nature and own a boutique guest house. Leaving the British Army after 26 years, Steve joined the Australian Army and served 3 years. In preparation for our next move, he then re-trained as a professional butler at The International Butler Academy in the Netherlands. He was then employed at the world renowned Savoy hotel in London as a personal Butler to the rich and famous dealing with Royalty and Hollywood stars from around the world. His professional service as a Butler instilled the high standards expected for ensuring guests receive the service they expect.

When looking for the idyllic location to visit or settle in, everything we read about Costa Rica said we should come and explore this amazing eco-friendly country, so we did. After doing a bit of backpacking around and meeting the wonderfully friendly local people, we decided the beautiful Costa Ballena was the most exhilarating, charming, relaxing place we had ever come across.

Rachel and Steve purchased this cabin in 2014

Why Rachel and Steve chose Uvita

We enlisted the help of the United Kingdom TV show called ‘A Place in the Sun’ (known as house-hunters International in warmer climates) to find us the place we had dreamed of. The research team combed the area and found the perfect place for us in Casitas Del Rio, just outside Uvita.

We bought the place with the 3 gorgeous casitas in a heart-beat. We fell in love with Casitas del Rio, the ‘little houses on the River’ the moment we saw them, and we are sure you will too. It is the perfect get away from it all; peace, quiet and tranquility combined with the soothing sound of the river, yet very conveniently located for all of the amenities

What makes this cabin unique

Wake up and take a coffee on your porch surrounded by beautiful flowers and greenery, watching the river and listening to its hypnotic soothing sound. Enjoy the convenience of feeling secluded, yet only being a 5 minute drive away from the conveniences of Uvita

average rating of 4.8 based on 5 reviews

Casitas del Rio is a wonder tranquil retreat in the middle of the tropical forest.

  • 5 of 5

Steven and Rachel have created a beautiful place, perfect for a relaxing stay, bird-watching, and exploring. Nice beaches are close by, and many restaurants are within a short drive. Their casitas were the best equipped and appointed houses we experienced in Costa Rica.

Lovely private Casitas set in stunning gardens

  • 5 of 5

The stylish and comfortable casitas are set in some of the most beautiful tropical gardens imaginable. They're private and very quiet with easy access to the river. On the opposite bank is a large area of protected forest with a huge variety of birds, monkeys, butterflies etc giving the whole experience a wild and remote feeling. And yet the site is really handy for the main coast road and the nearby beaches should you want them. The owners, Rachel and Steve were friendly and very helpful (especially when our hire-car's battery let us down!) and yet never intrusive, despite always being on hand. A real slice of tropical paradise with a sizable pool in what has to be one of the most gorgeous settings for a relaxing swim.

unique in costa rica!

  • 5 of 5

we traveled for 4 weeks in Costa Rica, ending our stay here. Every leg of our trip had something that made it a true adventure and beautiful. Our cottage by the riverfront did not disappoint. We had not had any other time where we were able to enjoy the sounds of the river and the enjoyment of animals enjoying the river. Steve was so accommodating with referrals to restaurants and really enjoyed just talking with him about Costa Rican life and their journey that brought them to Costa Rica. The cottage is beautiful, wish we could have stayed longer! Hopefully life will bring us back to this country, if so we will definitely stay here again! Be sure to walk along the river and check out the tadpoles that turn into black frogs the size half of a pencil eraser....bizarre and magnificent!

Lovely casitas, gardens, and river. Awesome Hostess.

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay in these lovely casitas. They were well appointed, the river view and gardens were amazing! Sitting on the deck and watching the water and looking for monkeys was fabulous. Rachel was a top-notch hostess: professional, warm, and gracious. She helped us with restaurant recommendations and chatted about our experiences in Costa Rica, as well as offering a full notebook of area offerings in the room.

We would go back in a heartbeat!

Quiet little cottages

  • 4 of 5

We only stayed a few days but during that time we had lots of opportunities to see many birds right close to the deck, and throuought the gardens giving hours of entertainment. There was a lot of attention to detail in the room, far more than you would expect in a conservative room like this. Details like an info package waiting for you on places to go / things to see and do.

Our location is near the town of Uvita, situated in a hidden river cove between the Talamanca mountains and the Pacific ocean, 400 Meters East of the Costanera Highway. We are right on the south bank of the Morete River.

Our area offers stunning mountain and coastal scenery, adventure tours, hiking, kayaking, zip-lining, whale and dolphin tours, bird-watching, horse- back riding, hidden waterfalls and swimming holes, deserted beaches, surfing, ATV tours, and more! We are 5 minutes away from a small town with restaurants, banks, and grocery stores, yet you feel far away from it all in our private river cove surrounded by primary forest.

We highly recommend you rent a 4 wheel drive vehicle to reach our accommodation and to explore our area. There are several shuttle and transportation options available to transport you from San Jose to Uvita, where you can pick up your pre-arranged rental vehicle. Or you may drive yourself by rental car from San Jose to Uvita. Find out more detailed 'getting here' information on our website.
