About owner/ Maxine Williams

I was born and raised in Saskatchewan and came to B.C. in the early days of Kitimat shortly after my marriage. I have lived in Alert Bay for over 50 years and I served on village council for 25 years and I have always been actively involved with the community.( mainly tourism). I held numerous positions with the union of B.C municipalities (U.B.C.M.) and the association of Vancouver Island Municipalities (A.V.I.C.C.). I had 9 children who were all raised on Cormorant Island. They are scattered all over Canada now. I love our historic old community with its colorful past and characters and enjoy sharing my stories and knowledge with our visitors. My husband and I have been married close to 60 years.

Lovely and unique place to stay

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed staying at The Old Customs House. It felt like we stepped 40-50 years back in time. Everything was ready for us and the place was immaculate when we arrived. The location was fantastic in the middle of the village across from the Tourist information and 2 min walk to the grocery store. We loved the amazing view from the front windows. One day we had a gorgeous eagle perched on the little tower on the building across the street. Got some nice photos! We loved the walks on the trails around the island. Also went on an amazing whale watching tour and saw lots of whales and sea life. My favorite was the Tsasala dance the island natives put on for the tourists. Well worth going to. Also a visit to the Native Cultural Centre U'mista is a must if you are interested in history, Native culture and shopping. And if you would like to try some Native food visit Duchess' Bannock and Desserts. Can't say enough about the The Old Customs House and Alert Bay. I know I would like to go back and bring my friends and family again.

Sally, Zach and Elle from Nanaimo, BC and Eva and Bengt from Sweden.

The rental was perfect for our purpose. I was with my father, son and his friend on a fishing trip.

  • 4 of 5

The rental was perfect for our purpose. I was with my father, son and his friend on a fishing trip. The space allowed us separate bedrooms, an equipped kitchen, TV's, internet and laundry. The owner, Maxine, was kind enough to provide access to a locked freezer outside for all the fish we caught.

The furnishings a little older but everything was clean and in good shape. The home is located on 'main street' right beside the grocery store and the tourist information.

I would gladly stay there again.
