This guest cabin was built for our family in 1980, we occupied it before building the main family lodge. It was built by Bill Hedge and his son Bob, two native craftsmen.
Owner/Manager purchased this lodge in 1980
The owner was raised on these properties, in the small house to the east of the vacation cabin. Her personal home is on the lower adjoining property and was built in 1980-81. She moved out of the cabin and into the lodge during March of 1982.
This is solid log construction! The logs were purchased from Arkansas Log Houses in Mena.
The cabin was very pretty but it was absolutely filthy. I was very disappointed in that. The frig had spills that had never been cleaned, cabinets that needed wiped down and the floor cleaned. There is no decent lighting in the bathrooms as they have lamps. Downstairs bathroom has a floor lamp making putting on make-up impossible. The downstairs bathroom needs a TOTAL remodel. The counter is so badly worn you can't even tell if it is clean and the cabinets are dirty and need painting. The tub is so disgusting with thick brown and black scum build up. It needs replaced. The bed in our room had cat and/or dog hair all over it and was not clean. The entire place needs deep cleaning badly. Cob webs and dust all over the logs, floors were filthy and had bugs everywhere, window sills above our beds were filthy with bugs and thick dust/cob webs. There was a dog dish in the kitchen that had old dog food and was nasty. we would have enjoyed the stay had it not been for all of these things. It is a nice cabin that desperately needs attention. And by the way it is not 18 miles to Mena it is about 30 miles from the cabin.
A group of friends rent the cabin each year for the Cossatot River Trail Half Marathon. We are always pleased with the accommodations from the owner and the property manager. The property is well maintained. The property manager is always great to advise when the property is ready for us! It's a great getaway!
It was utterly awesome!! Better than even expected. The log cabin was beautiful and the land around it was wonderful. Lots of bedrooms and room for the kids. All the kids want to buy it and live there. :) They played catch out in the front. Very nice ! The only thing I can say difficult about it was the drive in. Glad we had an SUV . But that was not really a problem for us because we're from the country anyway. Staying at the cabin made our trip up there even better! After driving up to Mena and around the mountains , the kids asked to go back to the cabin. They really enjoyed themselves. Great trip! Thank you .
The cabin feels like it's far away from civilization without the burdens of being away from everything. Plenty of beautiful swim spots around cabin. Closest store is 24 hours which helps a lot. The literally only bad thing is this county is dry but besides pure perfectness. My family and I have stayed in many cabins but this one by far is the best and it was a pleasure being here.
We enjoyed our short trip to the cabin with our Daugher and her husband and 4 kids.
It was a great place to rest or go hiking or just enjoy the scenery and play with the kids.
We ate well because the kitchen is well stocked for cooking meals and we enjoyed using the
grill both nights!
The only drawback is if you are a person who likes luxury vacays this is not it.
It could really use a good cleaning in the kitchen. I cleaned it when I got there and
even though I would definitely return in future, it would be nice to arrive at the cabin
without having to spend time doing that.
The beds were great!
There was plenty of room and there are shade trees and plenty of space to throw frisbee
and play games outdoors and the kids really enjoyed building a fire in the evenings
and roasting marshmallows!
And the State park is only 5 miles down the road.
This enormous cabin is five miles from the Cossatot River and Cossatot River State Park and 15 miles from Gillham Lake. The Cossatot River offers the only Class 5 rapids for kayakers in the southern middle of the United States. Cossatot River State Park offers camping, fishing, swimming, and hiking. The Army Corps of Engineers put a dam on the Cossatot River and the lake that was formed is Gillham Lake which is near Gillham, Arkansas which is south of Wickes 12 miles. This lake area offers fishing, skiing, camping, and RV sites. Although hunting is a big thing in this area, it is mostly done on Weyerhaeuser land which is leased. Hunting is available on Ouachita National Forest land and information can be obtained from forestry offices in Mena. Horseback riding is available from local folk who live on land that joins the river. ATV's are allowed on state park roads and information is available from park headquarters on Highway 278 about five miles from Cossatot Lynch House. As the crow flies, the cabin is about 10 miles from Oklahoma. However, because of Beaver's Bend State Park and lake, Ouachita National Forest land and Weyerhaeuser land, a trip to Oklahoma for shopping and events ranges from 17 miles to around 50 miles. There are events of all kinds in this area beginning in May through Labor Day for all ages, capabilities and preferences. County fairs and rodeos range from August to early September.
