'OLD MEXICO' CHARM/ PERFECT LOCATION/ MODERN COMFORTS
This charming, traditional Mexican home has it all: beauty, light, comfort, and history. With its two hundred year old walls, this casa simpatica celebrates its past with affection and joy.
Every room opens onto lush, bouganvilla filled patios. Art and folk art fill the lovely interiors. Add to the lively ambiance, the setting: the most photographed and painted Calle Aldama, one short flat block from the town's center, an easy walk to restaurants, shops, and galleries.
Opening the door into the house is to step into an enchanted garden. The copa de oro frames the front patio, a fountain beckons with its gurgling song, bird cages line the south bedroom wall, and a series of receding arches beckon you deeper into the house.
An 18th century Crucifix hangs in the zaguan (entryway), where it was hanging when the owner's mother bought the house in the 1970's. Although there has been constant upgrading and maintenance of the house throughout the years, the layout of the house remains as it has traditionally. There is a bedroom, bath, and den off the downstairs patio, and another bedroom and bath off the upstairs patio. The third cozy bedroom (referred to as 'the nun's cell'), is tucked in still farther off the back patio.
The living room, dining room, kitchen, and breakfast room are located in the heart of the house. A bright, plant-filled, tile covered dining area is off the dining room. There are many different places to set a dining table, and one of Joal's favorites is on the azotea. 'I love lunching with the butterflies'. Many of the plants on the roof terrace are plants that attract the monarchs.
Whether reading, dining, or having a drink at sunset on the azotea, it is a wonderful place to look out over the hillside, and to look down at the dome and the fanciful spires of the Parroquia.
Wedding processions wend their way down Aldama almost every Saturday afternoon, the Estudiantinas serenade this magic street on Saturday evenings.
The bells wake us up in the mornings and the canyon wren sings his song of the descending scale. Outdoors is indoors; indoors is outdoors. The sounds, the smells(orange blossoms and lavender in the back garden), and the sights inside this house are delicious and life giving.
Gabriella (Gaby) arrives with her smile, as warm as the Mexican sun, every morning Monday through Friday. She keeps the house, does the laundry, and will market and do some cooking. Her cheerful presence in a benediction on this house. All's well and all's well at this 'Old Mexico' house on the hillside.

Casa Sta. Catarina is the best deal going in San Miguel. No other property on Calle Aldama comes close to our rental price. And, location, location, location!! The easy access to literally hundreds of restaurants, shops, museums, the Bellas Artes, Teatro Angela Peralta, and the Petit Bar pocket movie theater make this a true find. Turn left out of the door, instead of right, and within a block you'll find yourself in the beautiful Juarez Park. The
new, talked about Rosewood Hotel, with its stunning roof bar, is also close to the park.
To be in the middle of 'the action', with the comforts of home, surrounded by the charm and beauty of Casa Sta. Catarina is a dream come true. This is a happy house to live in.
We loved every moment in this lovely, historic home. I kept finding new art pieces every day and the garden tended by Manual was beautiful. It is convenient to all on the most charming street in San Miguel. Gaby the maid was there to cook us delicious breakfasts. There are two seperate areas with bedroom, living room, dressing rooms and bath which was perfect for my friend and I. Can't wait to go back to this charming casa in this amazing city.
The management company was very helpful and the owners delightful!
Our family of four loved spending Christmas week at the enchanting Casa Santa Caterina! Comfortable, beautifully decorated, and located on one of the prettiest streets in San Miguel, the house was everything we had hoped for. We especially enjoyed the rooftop patio with its amazing views and the delicious breakfasts served in the courtyard. One item to note: While our two grown sons appreciated the privacy of the floor plan (each was able to have his own bedroom and bath), the separation and distance between the bedrooms would probably not be suitable for families with young children. For us, though, it was a perfect arrangement: in fact, we’d love to return!
We decided to try Thanksgiving in Mexico and were not disappointed! The house is lovely with an excellent location - no need to have a car. The staff was wonderful - no to little English but who cares, everyone understood. Each bedroom is on it's own level with a sitting room, en-suite bath and dressing room. The beds were very comfortable (I did wish for a larger bed for 2 people) and you were able to relax and enjoy the home. For those who require internet, it is only available in the front room if that makes a difference. Otherwise, you can walk out the front door, walk up or down the street a block and you are in the center of the activities - without the noise. I can't wait to come back and stay again - just wish it were available before April, 2015. Thank you for your hospitality!
