Many thanks for sharing your beautiful home with us for a long weekend. The house is beautifully restored and quite comfortable. The kitchen is so impressive we actually wanted to cook! We hope to visit The Brackbill House again.

Beyond expectations

  • 5 of 5

The Susquehanna Conference Emmaus Sisters gathered together for our 22nd annual retreat. Over the years we have rented homes in the Poconos, Rehoboth Beach, Berkeley Springs and Mercersburg areas. This year we decided to stay within the Pennsylvania Dutch area knowing we could be contending with a snow storm during March. I searched the internet and discovered the absolutely beautifully, well appointed Brackbill House in Houston Run. As I surveyed the various photos, read the amenities and reviews my impression was.... it can't be true. BUT IT IS TRUE!!!! The home was way beyond our expectations. We gathered in the living room area to watch our DVD's, played games in the basement level, watched TV shows in the basement media room. Everyone enjoyed experiencing the multi shower head Master Bath. Pictures of the kitchen cooking area don't do it justice. I originally thought it was a narrow galley style kitchen. The kitchen was spacious enough for three or four individuals to be working together to prepare our meals. Having a powder room toilet on the first floor and a separate toilet area in the basement level was perfect. We had some concerns about possible dampness and or chilliness in the basement sleeping area. NO WORRIES. The pond, working Amish farm, Amtrak train, and close proximity to Blue Ball, Kitchen Kettle Village, fire pit, and Houston Run Shady Maple Café as well as walking areas help to make this the perfect weekend retreat for our ladies. Unfortunately we were not able to experience the pool. Although we were able to enjoy sitting in the chairs as Saturday afternoon became quite warm and sunny. We prepared out hamburgers and grilled vegetables on the outdoor grill. With a resounding unanimous vote we will attempt to return to Brackbill house for our 2018 retreat. Thank you to Ashley Hopkins for all her help and answers to my numerous questions. Could not have pulled this off without her help. See you in 2018.

Great house, disappointing location

  • 4 of 5

The house was super fancy -- a touch-screen shower and mega high-end appliances and the like. Our group of 4 kids (ages 5-10) and 4 adults was very comfortable, and we really enjoyed using the beautiful kitchen. We were there in the winter, but the kids had fun running around in the yard. I imagined the house would be on a country lane surrounded by farmland, and that was only partly true. Though there were some nice views in some directions, the property is just off a major strip mall thoroughfare and very close to some other properties (including some kind of warehouse) and one of the closest neighbors is an enormous Urban Outfitters plant.

A piece of heaven

  • 5 of 5

A lovely home nestled in the PA countryside. Fresh, updated decor while maintaining the charm of the original farmhouse. Lovely wraparound porch with gorgeous views. Very comfortable accommodations for a family getaway, small reunion or ever a friend's weekend away.

"Our Best Vacation Ever!"

  • 5 of 5

I have just realized I never published my review for our July 2016 stay at the Brackbill House!

We wanted to take our 2 kids and their families on a vacation for a special ocasion and NOT at the beach for a change! My husband and I had been to the Lancaster area a few times in the past and knew that it had much to offer and made this our choice. Hmm...Pennsylvania?! For vacation? ( Polite smiles from the fam...)

Checking VRBO for a place to stay, I knew the Brackbill House would be perfect as soon as I saw it. We planned out the whole trip for we 3 couples and 3 grandchildren ages 6-13, centered around the house. We sent everyone the link and our 13 year old granddaughter was SO excited about the property that we encouraged her not to over-expect...that places usually look a lot better online than in "real life"! Well, this was the great exception! The website, wonderful as it is, simply does not do it justice! Ditto to all the other wonderful things everyone else is saying in other reviews, no need to repeat all that. I will just say that we have been to some awesome places, but in the months since that trip we have all agreed that this was the "best vacation ever!" Looking at pictures over Christmas, our granddaughter asked if we could go back there again, but this time "stay at the house more!"

Great girls weekend in the country

  • 4 of 5

The house is amazing!!! We had a fantastic and relaxing weekend. We usually go out to eat at least once but after arriving and a quick trip to the grocery store we opted to stay in the whole time. Everything was comfortable and modern. We lounged outside and watched with fascination as the neighboring Amish family worked their farm. We met the previous owner of the home as she lives nearby and after begging her to join us she graciously did and she showed us her photos of the house as she knew it for the previous 40 years. Yes we are that group that just pulls you right in! There were 8 of us and we were never crowded or uncomfortable. We had game night in the basement game room and sat at the large dining table in the kitchen for hours. The only thing we wished for was a heated pool. As we rented in May the pool was open but too cold to go in. We sat at the edge with our feet in the wading end as that was the only water warm enough to use. Thank you for a wonderful weekend.
