About Alice Martin

We were weekenders for many years, but finally decided to build our dream home on the property in 2008. Mark is a Washington University professor, and Alice is a substitute teacher in the local area. We love it here!

Alice Martin purchased this house in 1996

This property was purchased because of the natural beauty of the area. The area is covered with oaks, hickories and cedar trees, as well as many native wildflowers. The convenience of I-44 close by was an added benefit.

What makes this house unique

This home is secluded, private and very, very quiet. The natural environment is restful and restorative. You can be as isolated as you like, or you can choose to be a tourist and get out to numerous attractions, it is all up to you!

Stay for a while!

  • 5 of 5

Great little house on a good fishing hole. The house is just big enough for a family or two couples (if one couple will stay on the bunk bed!) and the common area is very comfy and roomy. Fishing is easy off the fishing dock and my angler father had a good time catching sunfish and a few tiny catfish using just worms. They had a canoe, 2 kayaks, and a sit-on-top kind of kayak.

The lake is larger than a pond, but not too large. It's an easy stroll around the parameter of the lake, and the owners have their hose on the other side- but it's completely obscured by trees so renters still have their privacy. There is a map to many trails which are well maintained and easy to find.

House was simple and very clean. No bugs inside! Kitchen had everything we needed. We stayed for the weekend, and it seemed like just a taste of a longer, more relaxing vacation. We will be booking for a few days next time so we can really settle into the relaxing woods.

The house was clean and well maintained. Alice was very nice and accommodating. The kayaks were also a plus and the whole family enjoyed them. Our dog also had a ton of fun looking for fish in the pond. Overall a very fun and relaxing trip!!

Awesome getaway house and lake!

  • 4 of 5

Love the property and all the amenities. We did bring our own tv for relaxing indoors. We built a bonfire on the lake and enjoyed cocktails in the evening. The house was very comfortable and the rooms were perfect for the 2 of us. The dishwasher didn't clean very well. There was too much moss in the lake to swim. And we soon found out we weren't alone. We saw people fishing on the lake and we were Sun bathing on the dock. There was also a tent on the back side on another property about 75 ft. Away. This was a good location as we went to Hermann, Mo. for a day at the winery town. We antique shopped and enjoyed lunch. We also went floating in Steelville 1 day and also had a picnic on the Bourbeuse river another day. All in all we enjoyed our stay and would recommend to others. Thanks

Owner's Response: Hi Jamie, I'm glad you enjoyed your stay at our guest house. We do occasionally have an issue with "seaweed" in the pond, but it is harmless. We have grass carp in the pond to control it, but the amount can vary during the summer and is beyond our control. My husband and I just walked the back side of our property to see what "tent" you were referring to. We do have several green tarps behind the guest house as well as a dark green pole barn, but we own more than a hundred yards surrounding the house in all directions. As for the fisherman, it was my husband. We live on the same property as the guest house. Our house is on the other side of the pond and is not visible from the guest house. We do occasionally fish or swim from the dock on our side of the pond, but we always stay on our side of the pond when we have guests. To our knowledge, there wasn't anyone else on the property except us, but I am sorry that my husband's presence disturbed your sunbathing. I'm glad you found some activities in the area. There are a lot of fun things to do around here, and I'm sure you enjoyed the Bourbeuse and the floating! Alice

Complete relaxation in a peaceful, beautiful setting

  • 5 of 5

We've stayed in many similar, secluded cabins or cottages, and this has been our favorite. The interior is comfortable and inviting, and has a gorgeous view of the lake and grounds. The lake is just big enough to explore by kayak...and there are multiple boats so the whole family can enjoy them. The grounds are lovely to walk, and the nearby towns are charming. We will return!

Great private vacation spot!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I spent 5 days here in July with our 2 dogs. It was the perfect spot for all of us. Our dogs loved swimming and chasing fish in the pond and exploring the trails on the property. It was really nice having kayaks to use and also a wide variety of books, games and puzzles in the house. We never got bored even when it was over 100 degrees out and too hot to be outside. We had an issue with the AC unit on our first day but everything was fixed immediately when I notified the owners. We would love to come back here again, though maybe when it is slightly cooler out!
