About Sue Cropper

Having traveled extensively ourselves, we've enjoyed (and in some cases not enjoyed!) a wide variety of accommodations. Quality construction and amenities, cleanliness, peace and quiet, the great outdoors and a comfortable feeling of home are what we look for in our travels and we really enjoy offering just that to our guests. Having stayed at some of the finest hotels and B&B's in the world, we know what it takes to make guests feel comfortable, welcome and at ease.

Sue Cropper purchased this apartment in 2007

Why Sue Cropper chose Black Mountain

True premium quality and location. At 3500' in the Blue Ridge Mountains, in a private gated community, with the 22,000 acres of fully protected watershed forest as our neighbor - one can't find a much nicer place to have it all - and be away from it all at the same time - and still be only 10 minutes from town! 'Why this property?' - because it's one of the nicest places on earth!

What makes this apartment unique

We fell in love with our land the moment we saw it! It is very rare to find land at 3500' on a mountainside that allows for one level living and a large, moderately sloped/flat driveway - serviced by Asheville's spectacular quality water. We did all the design work on the home prior to construction. From the initial site work through the design and construction of the home, we applied many years of experience to every detail. Very few rental homes have solid oak doors and trim... 11 foot ceilings... their own private entrance... private parking... private patio... washer and dryer... full kitchen, etc. etc. This apartment was designed to give the comfort and service of a fully decked out condominium (it's actually much larger - and way nicer - than most one bedroom condos!)

Guestbook comments from the owner

The apartment is gorgeous. (and huge!) It's more like a luxury, private condominium than an apartment! We really enjoyed our stay and will definitely be returning. It was great to be within ten minutes of Black Mountain and have the apartment to 'get back to nature.' Four thumbs up from us - thank you!

Very Clean Mountain Gem

  • 5 of 5

We were so pleased with this apartment. It was very clean, private and the views throughout Laurel Ridge are some of the best around. Jim and Sue were wonderful to work with and give great suggestions on food, travel, and sites/trails. A short, enjoyable drive to Asheville. We enjoyed your private mountain getaway...you will be very happy renting this property.

Luxury Mountain Retreat

  • 4 of 5

This was our first experience with VRBO...Driving from flat country on the Gulf Coast to this Black Mountain destination was an adventure. We arrived in the early evening chugging up the mountain in our four cylinder Toyota RAV 4 following Jim's carefully worded directions. There are roads named, North Fork, Right Fork and North Fork, Left Fork, confusing for me trying to drive, read and follow. Then, there are cut backs up steep grades with the motor coughing and begging for help. We arrived at the wrong house and a phone call quickly helped us find our destination. The arrival finally was well worth the effort, as Jm and Sue were waiting with key in hand. The apartment is exactly as described by previous reviews. One's imagination takes off as we could feel the presence of writers and poets and lovers… those seeking solitude and peace gracing this mountain retreat.

Wonderful surprises were found around every corner, a “deep” tub with beautiful grecian tile. The closets were abundant and well stocked with every need. We tend to 'over pack' and here… we found ample hangers, shelves and drawers to store our clothes properly. Thick genuine solid oak can be found everywhere with careful detail. The recessed lighting is generous and the dimmers provide just the right amount of light when needed. Large windows are found in both the living area and the bedroom providing lots of sunshine. The apartment is maintained at 72 degrees, but can be changed with a call. The stone fireplace is beautiful, although we found it peculiar that a $10.00 an hour charge is required to light the "gas" fireplace. We imagined it has something to do with gas availability? The apartment is immaculate ! The bed is a queen and very comfortable..we slept well, with the blackout drapes drawn at night, we slept late into the morning. Very quiet and peaceful.

TIPS… Try Ingles for food shopping with a bonus..they rent overnight DVD's for entertainment. The TV is small and far from the sitting area with few channels to select. A nice future addition would be a terraced entrance from the higher driveway parking. The stone walkway is on a steep grade from the parking/driveway to the apartment level.

Our review would surely be a FIVE if the apartment had more seating other than the sofa bed, a larger screen TV with more channel selection. The addition of more comfortable seating and attention to steep grade entrance. Also, a map using drawings with mileage would be great.

Peaceful, Mountain Retreat

  • 5 of 5

This beautiful little mountain apartment is the perfect weekend away. Close to black mountain (about 10 minutes) but far enough up the mountain to be quiet, private, and peaceful, this one bedroom apartment in a gated community looks out over the beautiful surrounding mountains. Absolutely beautiful apartment very comfortable, quiet and convenient with a full kitchen, w/d, and even a fireplace (optional.) Both Jim and Sue reside in the house above, but make coming and going from the property easy and safe. They were very helpful with providing great areas for breakfast, lunch and dinner, but most importantly I was honored to have a beatiful hike by the heliport with Jim and was very impressed with what a kind and humble individual he is. Both my wife and I needed to de-stress and I can assure we did. Both my wife and I look forward in near future to come back to this beautiful apartment, there is so much more we'd love to do. Thank you Jim and Sue, it was both a pleasure and a blessing.

23rd Anniversary trip, June 8th - 11th

  • 5 of 5

We chose Black mountain to go visit for we have not been there. It was our 23rd anniversary trip and we chose this BEAUTIFUL Apartment to stay in. Sue was very nice and very helpful with all our questions and needs. There was not nothing that we needed to bring but our cloths and personal items. It was nice and quiet and had everything we would need if we were at home! The only thing I was missing was my rocking, reclining chair. But outside of that it was all and then some of what we needed. I cannot forget our short walk to the Chapel on the mountain! What a BEAUTIFUL view and a must see! I recommend the coach house for dinner, which we had the seafood. The Wifi worked great as myself and my husband was hooked up to it and had no problems at all. All in all it was a great trip and will return in the future! Thank you again Jim & Sue Cooper for letting us stay in your Beautiful apartment!

Quiet, beautiful, comfortable mountain get away.

This beautiful little mountain apartment is the perfect weekend away. Close to black mountain (about 10 minutes) but far enough up the mountain to be quiet, private, and peaceful, this one bedroom apartment in a gated community looks out over the beautiful surrounding mountains. The apartment itself is comfortable, quiet and convenient with a full kitchen, w/d, and even a fireplace (optional.) The hosts reside in the house above, but make coming and going from the property easy and safe. (And seem quite delightful hosts with good restaurant suggestions and knowledge of fun things around the area.) We were looking for a little weekend away to snuggle and eat great food and found this to be a fantastic spot!
