About the property

Condo, 2 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 4)

Aloha, and welcome to the beautiful island of Kaua'i. Situated on an oceanfront bluff, the Poipu Makai A1 is a ground floor, oceanfront two bedroom, two bath condominium with stunning views of the blue Pacific. Both the living room and master bedroom sport their own private lanais that open to a grassy lawn that spills out to the sea. You can watch dolphins and whales(in season) while you dine on your own patio, or walk down a short trail to lava outcroppings and watch sea turtles playing in the waves.

Sunsets (and sunrises) are breathtaking from the Poipu Makai. Bring your camera and keep it'll use it here!

The tropical master bedroom hosts a California King bed and a flat panel television. Fall asleep to the sound of waves crashing on the rocks below.

The garden view 'surfin' safari' second bedroom has with two twin beds which can be joined via 'bed bridge' upon request. Each of the bedrooms is completely private with its own bath.

The kitchen is fully equipped with everything needed to prepare gourmet meals. Coffee maker, espresso maker, microwave,'s here for you. Washer and dryer provided as well. And if it's the beach you're heading for, feel free to use the boogieboards, snorkels, fins, chairs, umbrella, or ice chest. No need to waste valuable luggage space! Just bring your flip-flops and prepare to relax island-style.

And just in case you need it, we also offer high-speed internet, to send those pictures to all your relatives!

Situated on the southernmost tip of the island, there is even a glimpse of the mysterious 'forbidden' island of Nii'hau off in the distance. You can walk five minutes to two of Hawaii's best beaches, Shipwreck or Poipu. There are hiking trails within minutes, and it's just a short drive to the Spouting Horn blowhole, or the Tropical Botanical Gardens, a lovely way to get to know the beauty of Kaua'i.

About The Owner

We love to 'hang loose' in Kauai.

The Owner purchased this condo in 2004

Why The Owner chose South Shore

We have always loved Hawaii and dreamed of owning a place of our own. On an anniversary trip on Kauai, we both knew that this was the island we wanted to return to again and again.

What makes this condo unique

We love to explore the island and all the small, 'hole-in-the-wall' restaurants. Our location is prime for beach time and for hiking, and our personal favorite: just sitting on the lava rocks below the property and watching the sea turtles for hours.

Excellent View & Private feel despite crowded Poipu area

  • 4 of 5

The best thing about this unit is the ground level ocean view lanai where you can sit out in a mostly shaded area and enjoy the ocean and scenery. Most of the time it was very private and quiet because it is an end unit, but for a few days some really rowdy people were around. That's just the luck of the draw. A heritage trail goes east and you can walk for miles on a sea cliff trail right from the unit. The ocean was a bit too rough to snorkel right out in front while we were there. DO NOT depend on the stuff in the closet for your adventures. Maybe someone will leave something and you'll get lucky but the boogie board, snorkel stuff and cooler were all malfunctioning. We didn't try the chairs. We often walked to the beaches nearby. But there is plenty of parking at the beaches if you want to drive. This is a great unit, but there are several little things that need to be fixed so if you are OCD stay somewhere else. I was looking forward to an espresso machine and after a thorough search never found one. I think the unit itself could use less clunky furniture or could be re-arranged with a bit more flow. But the ocean views make up for most everything. The pool is super tiny but the water in it was nice. We came for the ocean not the pool! There is no air-conditioning, so if you are one of those people who need total luxury you might want to stay in a hotel instead of a condo. I have a king bed at home and this one was really a lot smaller, so maybe a pygmy king? I'm not going to mention bugs because it is a tropical place and if you want a bug free environment you'll have to go somewhere hermetically sealed. We absolutely loved the geckos and lizards. There were none inside the unit, but they are around the condo and my son was crazy for them. Right down at Brenneckes beach we snorkeled with about 15 sea turtles. Federal law says no touching or getting too close, but there are so many and they are friendly you feel as if you are one. We saw dolphins one morning and also a monk seal on Poipu beach. I looked at some of the other condos around and in comparison was happy I chose this one.

Just What We Were Looking For

  • 5 of 5

We spent a week at this condo, sharing with another couple, and it was just about perfect for our needs. The view is amazing (lots of whales and dolphins in the winter), as the condo is steps from a rocky cliff down to the ocean. It's a short walk to a couple of little beaches in Poipu and is very convenient to Koloa and the rest of Poipu by car.

The furnishings are very nice - not luxurious, but appropriate for a rental. Everything was very clean and well-maintained, with the exception of a broken appliance that was fixed right away. The bed in the master bedroom was uncomfortable, so if you have a bad back like me, use the second bedroom (which can be converted to a king bed). Bring earplugs - the waves crash loudly against the cliffs and the sound is not necessarily soothing at night!

Overall, an excellent choice for a budget stay on Kaua'i. We saved a lot of money by hitting the farmers' markets and cooking fresh fish for dinner instead of eating out.
