The kitchen has a full oven with stove top, dishwasher, microwave, and refrigerator with ice maker. There is a second refrigerator in the wet bar area with filtered water and ice dispenser in the door. The kitchen is stocked with place settings for 10-12 and includes a convection oven, blender, coffee maker, pots and pans, and kitchen linens.

The living area has a 42” HD TV with Dish Network programming. LG sound bar has blue-tooth capability.

No WiFi is intentional, please talk to each other!! If you have to check your email the cell service for Verizon and AT&T is good. We loose guest due to this but it is ok with us. We believe it needs to be this way someplace.

The wet bar room includes bar glassware and bar accessories. The refrigerator dispenses whole or crushed ice.

The outside back deck is 10’ x 65’ and is covered to provide shade. It has plenty of sitting for 10-12 people and a bar style area for outside eating that sits 8 people. The deck has a gas log fire pit for cool evenings and ceiling fans for the hot summer days to enjoy the outside. The back deck gets early morning sun, great for watching the sunrise, and is completely shaded for most of the day. The lower back deck has a picnic table for a place to get away and a porch swing that overlooks the lake. This area is covered as well and makes a great place to hide from the others!

Mermaid Cove is located a short 30 minute drive from I-65 and 3 miles by water from Smith Lake Dam in Spring Branch. All roads are paved to the property. Birmingham and Huntsville (1-1.5 hour drive) Jasper (1 hour drive) Nashville is 2.5 hour drive. The property is located in the back of the cove but just out in the main creek to provide the optimal location. During low water levels in the fall we have minimum of 40 feet of water under our boat house. Very low boat traffic provides a calm day on the water even at peak seasons. The covered boathouse has one 9’ X 20’ boat slip, one 10' X 20" boat slip with boat lift that fits V-bottom boats with 8.5' beam. Two covered PWC dry docks are connected to the boat house. The 16‘ X 28’ swim deck has all day sun for the “sun worshipers” but plenty of shade when needed. Lounge chairs, paddle-boat, kayaks, Stand up Paddle Board, water floats, swim noodles, Splash Island 18' x 6' and deck umbrella will be available for your use. Most life jacket sizes are available in the boathouse shed. Check with us if you need life jackets.

Electrical Safety awareness has been raised in the last couple of years on the lake due to electrical shock while swimming. Our boathouse has water and electricity running to it from the house. The electrical current is protected by a GFI breaker in case of a ground fault. This prevents the current from staying on if a shock occurs. This main line is also controlled from the main breaker box in the house and can be turned off if you prefer. This prevents accidents from occuring due to electrical shock.

A charcoal grill and a gas grill is available for your use on the patio. We provide propane but not the charcoal. A wood fire pit is built into the patio and firewood is provided for campfires. Our property has a gentle slope to the water and we have graded the walkway and added steps to make it very easy to access the boat house. This is not handicapped accessible.

Parking for vehicles and boat trailers is available on the property. We have a gravel drive through drive large enough to accommodate up to an F-2500 with a Sea Ray 260 with no problem. Can park approximately 5-7 vehicles and a couple of trailers.

Enjoy beautiful Lewis Smith Lake at Mermaid Cove year round. My wife and I fell in love with Mermaid Cove 15 years ago at first sight and now want to share our peaceful cove with you. Smith Lake is one of the best kept secrets in the country with its crystal clear water and plenty of hidden coves that will rival any getaway location we have visited. Mermaid Cove provides clear deep water with easy access to the boat dock providing a stress free and relaxing weekend getaway or week-long stay anytime of the year. Our goal is to provide you with clean and comfortable carefree lodging in our lake home and a place you will want to return to year after year.

Mermaid Cove will tranquilize you with beautiful views of the lake from the upper deck of the house or just sitting on the dock watching the day go by. As ole sailors told stories of sighting mermaids on their long voyages across the sea, Mermaid Cove will provide its own mysteries and experiences for you and your guest to share for many years. Come and visit to find your own “mermaids” at Smith Lake. BTY: some sightings of stripe bass on this lake resemble mermaids, just to be clear!

Mermaid Cove provides year round peace and relaxing with a warm fire on the gas logs on the deck on a cool fall evening or building a wood fire on the patio for so mores in the summer. There is never a bad time to enjoy the lake with plenty of year round activities within 30-45 miles of the house. Year round golf, guided fishing trips on the lake as well as fly fishing below the dam for trout, arts and crafts, bird watching, kayaking and boating. Seasonal activities include art/music festivals, water sports, hunting and fishing. The neighborhood has shaded paved roads that are excellent for walking or jogging with low traffic. More advanced walkers and runners will enjoy rolling hills and many straight-a-ways to challenge your abilities. There are walk/runs from 1-10 mile out and backs.

We hope you will come and visit us on Smith Lake and find your “mermaid” moment as we have. We look forward to seeing you on the lake.

About Pam and David Hartzog

Pam and David Hartzog live in Decatur, AL. We purchased this home 15 years ago and have enjoyed remodeling and updating it through the years. We have used the property privately during this time to enjoy our 2 children/spouses and 2 grandchildren along with many close friends. We will still enjoy 'Mermaid Cove' but want to share our place with you and your friends. We have worked diligently to make the accommodations warm and friendly for your stay. The outside areas are planned well to make the most of the views and experience the lake safely. Inside the home you will find modern conveniences with a lake/fishing cabin feel. We will strive to make your stay one that you will want to return to soon.

Pam and David Hartzog purchased this house in 2003

Why Pam and David Hartzog chose Crane Hill

Smith Lake is the cleanest, clearest lake in the state. The mainwater shed is out of the Bankhead National Forest. This lake has a lot of wooded property with no development so it stays clean and clear year round. It is controlled by Alabama Power and they generate hydroelectric power from the lake at the dam. The dam is the second largest earth dam in the country. It is worth a trip to see from the back side at 300 ft high. The lake has all types of fishing and very deep water in the southern parts of the lake where Mermaid Cove is located. Stripe fishing is a must on Smith Lake. We catch 9-15 lb stripe all the time. My son just caught his first 20 lb this year. Below the dam in the Warrior River you can now fish for rainbow trout. This is a year round sport now that they have regulated the flow to support the trout. There is no other place in Alabama you can fish for so many species within a 30 minute drive. It is also one of the best water sports lakes in Alabama for wake boarding, skiing, boating, paddle boards, and swimming. The water clarity is incredible and a must see. The sun rise and sunsets are one of the most romantic times of the day. The lake really glows when the sun hits it early and late. With 500 miles of shoreline you can spend all day out on the boat and not see half the lake. Being a deep lake there are very few snags so boating is very safe, even running at night. Mermaid Cove is located in the back of a large creek which limits boat traffic. One of the draws for us was it has deep water year round and low boat traffic. Smith Lake levels can vary 20 feet throughout the year so all boat houses float. Houses with boat docks on the main creeks have limited use of their boat docks during peak seasons due to boat traffic rocking the docks so much. This is not a problem with our location. Our dock is designed to withstand any waves with little rocking, if ever, and is easy to access at low or high water levels.

What makes this house unique

Mermaid Cove main feature is the house back upper deck over looking the water. I can sit here and just relax. There are three ceiling fans to keep you cool in the summer and a gas fire pit to keep you warm in the cooler evenings. I can't find a better place to just relax! You will not want to leave.

The outdoor patio overlooks the lake and has a fire pit for wood fires. This is a great late evening place to unwind with family and friends.

The boat dock has 2 jet ski dry docks and 1 boat slip and are all covered. There is plenty of room on our boat dock to just spend the day sitting on the dock and enjoying the water. We have very low boat traffic in our cove so not much rocking as with many places in the main creeks of the lake. Mermaid Cove has several places outside where you can find private time away from a larger group. The decks and patio is a great place to bird watch. There are many different varieties of birds from bluebirds, chickadees, woodpeckers, ducks and Canadian geese. We have a flock of Canadian geese that have taken our cove as their home. We see and hear them year round. Last year they had chicks and frequently paddled around our cove looking for food. Once in a while you may see an American Eagle, but it maybe a Turkey Buzzard so make sure! We have 3 kayaks, 1 Stand-up Paddle Board, and a 2 man paddle boat that are available for our guest to use. They are a great way to see the wildlife up close and get a little exercise. We just added a Splash Island 18' x 6' which the little ones will love and great for adults to just chill in the water.

Perfect get-a-way house

  • 5 of 5

The property was just as described---perhaps better. Loved, loved the long wide porch where we could sit and take in the lake view. And the dock--can't say enough about how great it was. My four and three year old grandchildren enjoyed catching small fish off the dock. We rented a pontoon boat from Duskin Marina and took several tours around parts of the lake. The owners were great to communicate with. I give the house my strong recommendation.

Owner's Response: We are glad you enjoyed the house and lake. The fall is our favorite time of the year at Mermaid Cove. The lake is so quiet and peaceful this time of the year and makes a great place to unwind. We spend a lot of time on the porch as well! We hope you will be able to come back again soon.

Great house, quiet spot on the lake

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful home with lots to do on the lake. We enjoyed the paddle board, paddle boat and splash island, especially our 5 year old daughter! The kitchen is well stocked as are towels and other necessities. It was a great place for a much needed break from our crazy schedule. We would definitely return. Also of note: we had to cancel our stay earloer in the year due to a family emergency and the owners were extremely understanding and helpful, allowing us to reschedule our trip for an alternate date. That was much appreciated!

Very Nice

  • 5 of 5

This was a great place to stay. We stayed for our anniversary and our kids and grand kids came up for the weekend. The place was very well stocked with towels and wash clothes. Normally we have to wash towels everyday when we go away, but not this time. We hope to return again soon. Thanks for the water toys. We all enjoyed our stay

This is our second year to make Mermaid Cove our family summer vacation spot and it was just as great as we remembered! Beautiful home where you can relax and enjoy family or time alone. So well furnished with nearly everything one needs! We especially appreciate being able to use the paddle boat and assorted floats and noodles -- plus, a well stocked kitchen with cookware and dishes... and more. The deck that spans the length of the house overlooking gorgeous Smith Lake is perfect for one or a crowd. Fun, whimsical decorations round out a lovely lake home.

Beautiful house and property. this made for the most relaxing vacation for my entire family.

  • 5 of 5

Mermaid cove was an amazing place to stay. We spent the majority of our time on the porch at the high top tables or floating in the lake. the amenities were top notch with all of the kayaks, paddle board, paddle boat, and floats. I really appreciated the extra large fridge in the bar area to hold all of the drinks as the other fridge got full from all of the food. we did not lack for anything and I would definitely return!!!

There is fly fishing below the dam for rainbow trout year round. It takes about 30 minutes to drive from the house to the dam. There are several festivals throughout the year in Cullman.
