About the property

Spacious 3 bedroom, 2 bath home in Poipu Kai Resort, a few steps from beaches

This private single-level home provides the Aloha spirit in the beautiful and flourishing tropical landscape within the Lanai Villas section of Poipu Kai Resort. The moment that you enter our home you know this spacious 3 bedroom, 2 bath Kauai vacation home is designed for Hawaiian living at its best.

Mele Hale (Home of Song) is beautifully and uniquely decorated with style, comfort and relaxation in mind. It is spacious enough to enjoy a gathering of friends and family (up to 7 people), yet cozy and private enough for a couple who are looking for a luxurious and quiet vacation retreat. Enjoy the tropical breeze flowing throughout the house. Vaulted ceilings with fans, and numerous windows, create a fresh, airy vacation residence that invites indoor-outdoor living.

After exploring the many Kauai farmer’s markets, enjoy cooking for your loved ones in the fully equipped and well stocked kitchen. Or take it outdoors and cook in your own private, tropical backyard; equipped with a large gas grill and outdoor seating for 8. The backyard is truly an oasis. Kick back in the chaise lounge chairs at night, and thanks to the near absence of city lights, marvel at the glorious, Hawaiian night skies.

What really makes this home special is stepping out of your backyard and having access to the Poipu Kai green belt.

- You can stroll east to the Grand Hyatt, Anara Spa, Shipwreck Beach and the Maha'ulepa Heratige Trail. A perfect area to stroll and hike. It also offers world class surfing.

- Walking west brings you to the Poipu Kai resort pool, hot tub, and tennis courts (tennis courts available for a nominal fee).

- Brennecke’s Beach, and Poipu Beach Park, are another 5 minute walk past the pool. (If you don’t feel like walking, load up the car with all of our beach toys, chairs and towels; there is ample free parking next to these beaches). Poipu Beach Park offers some of the safest swimming in Hawaii with a life guard on duty seven days a week. Brenneke’s Beach is known for it’s easy to catch body boarding and body surfing waves. It is a favorite for locals and visitors alike. There is a protected area for swimmers and snorkeling with surf breaks off shore for the experienced surfer.

Our home is in an unbeatable location suited for exploring all that the sunny south shore has to offer! We hope that you enjoy your vacation on the Garden Isle!

For you convenience and security, we accept payment by Credit Card, PayPal, and back transfers (ETF or Wire Transfer).

About Janelle Owens

The home is owned by husband and wife, Chris and Janelle, who live primarily in the State of Washington. We have visited Hawaii many times with our kids and relatives and decided in 2014 to also become part-time residents (and maybe full-time someday). We are very active and outdoors oriented, and have had many adventures in Kauai and the other islands with our kids. We are very tuned in to how to be active and get the most out of Kauai, but also how to find the personal and meditative side of Kauai. Our goal is for all of our guests to create lifelong memories during their stay at our home, and have a very smooth and problem-free stay.

Janelle Owens purchased this house in 2014

Why Janelle Owens chose South Shore

Our very first visit to Hawaii was to Kauai and the Poipu Kai area back in 1992. We walked our 1-year old son in his stroller along the Poipu Kai public walkway to go back and forth to the beach, and fell in love with Kauai on that trip. Now that the kids grown up, we couldn't help but return to our Kauai beginnings and acquire our home, which we had strolled past countless times during the our prior visits.

What makes this house unique

The quiet and seclusion of a private home in a single family neighborhood, but with the amenities of the Poipu Kai Resort (pools, tennis), and just a few steps from two beautiful beaches. Oh, and of course, we should mention that Poipu is sunny and dry, so it's the place to go for a weather bulletproof vacation year-round.

Fabulous home for a family vacation

  • 5 of 5

We had a fantastic week staying at this house. I'd definitely want to stay here again. We were so sad to have to leave. The house was well stocked with whatever utensils you might need to cook and it was nice and clean. We had 3 adults and 3 kids and all were very comfortable here. Really appreciated all the beach toys, chairs, mats, boogie boards, etc. that we could not have traveled with. We did not have a baby but the house has everything you might need. I highly recommend staying at a home rather than a hotel. so much more comfortable and less expensive. The washer and dryer were handy and really appreciated the extra fridge/freezer in the garage since we stocked up at Costco for our week of meals. The beach and pool are mere minutes away on the greenbelt right behind the house. the backyard is private and beautiful. Love all the natural light in the house. The owners have thought of everything. Highly recommend a nightly stroll to the beach. So beautiful.

Owner's Response: Thanks for the very nice review, Denise. We agree that renting a private home such as ours is a much more relaxed and economical way to go for a family vacation in Poipu. Glad you took advantage of the gear we provide - we take pride in providing the extras that families need to have fun, so they can skip the shopping trips. Come back and enjoy our home again, if you return to visit the Garden Isle. Mahalo, Janelle and Chris

Perfect house for families!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here march 18-25 with 4 adults, a 1 year old, and an almost 3 year old. It was perfect. The house is laid out very nicely with a sleeping side and a living side. My kids could nap/sleep in while the rest of us were in th living room visiting. There is a beach that is PERFECT for toddlers at the Poipu Beach park (about a .5 mile walk) we walked it daily and never had a problem. My 3 year old daughter loved the walk on the beautiful green pathway to the beach. We saw seals and sea turtles on the beach daily. It was amazing! We also tried out the boogies boards in shipwrecks beach (about a 5 minute walk in the opposite direction) One day we rented a DVD And couldn't get the DVD player to work. We made a call to the management company and it was fixed within hours. Excellent service! I will recommend this house to everyone I know. It is so nice to come to a place that has beach chairs, umpbrellas, and toys ready to go. The house did get hot in the middle of the day since there is no AC, but with open windows to let in the breeze and fans it was manageable. Thank you for a great stay on Kauai. The location of this house can't be beat!!

There are a few things you really need to know before committing to this property

  • 2 of 5

Overall the house was OK, most things worked, the beds were comfortable and the location was great (1/2 way between Shipwreck and Brennecke beachs). However when you are paying the equivalent of $10,000+ per month there are a number of things which hindered our enjoyment of the property. 1) The noise. Between the traffic, lawn mowing and edging, and the massive construction the daytime hours are noisy. 2) No help from the management company: we called for assistance and didn't even receive a call back. 3) Overall: things like a master bedroom dresser with drawers that don't work, to low quality cookware in the kitchen, holes in the screens, the house just wasn't isn't up to what we have had with other rentals. 4) Neighbors: For the most part they were good but you have people left and right as well as behind you that are close enough that you hear virtually everything.

Owner's Response: We take great pride in having our home serve as the foundation of great Kauai vacations for people all over the world. Over the 3 years that we have owned and rented our home, we have consistently had 5 star reviews; we have only received the highest praise for how well we maintain our home and property. We want to address your concerns. Noise: Our home is on a quiet street, and there is virtually no traffic noise. There is a two-lane road a mile away, and on occasion, there is a small amount of noise that one can hear from it; but that is only when it is still. Typically, all one hears are the palm trees rustling from the trade winds. Poipu Kai Association takes great pride in maintaining their grounds, so there may be noise from lawn mowers and leaf blowers. However, the hours they work are restricted to when most people are out enjoying the beaches or mountains. During your stay, a homeowner on our street was doing a small remodeling job on their house, perhaps you found that annoying. There is no massive construction going on anywhere near our home. Property management: Our property managers are on the island a short distance from our home. They are available 24/7 to our guest that might need assistance. We are sorry that they did not return your phone call. That is not at all typical of them, but mistakes do happen. We wish that you had called them a second time and are sure they would have addressed your issue. Maintenance: It is important that our guests have everything that they need to prepare meals to enjoy with their family and friends. We are always adding quality equipment and utensils to our kitchenware. We have consistently received positive reviews about this fact. We were in our home the week after your stay and did not see any holes in the screens. We always appreciate it when a guest mentions something that has been overlooked. We take pride in up keeping our home to the highest level. We will have our property managers check the screens and drawers in case there is something wrong that we did not notice. Neighbors: Our home is on a residential street in a quiet neighborhood. Our street does not typically attract the “party scene”; most renters are families. Sometimes you can hear other families enjoying their vacation in their yards; but you could hear that at any hotel, house, or condo on Kauai. We truly do hope that, overall, you had a wonderful vacation on Kauai. -Janelle and Chris

Beautiful well equipped property. Great location within walking distance to Brenneckes Beach & Hyatt

  • 5 of 5

We loved being able to walk to the beach in the mornings or the Hyatt for cocktails or nice dinner. A short drive to restaurants, shopping, etc. This was our first VRBO. We would definitely return. 5 adults and a two year old. They had a pack and play, stroller and high chair that made it very convenient. This is our 4th visit to Kauai and our favorite island🌴😊❤️.

Wonderful Mele Hale

  • 5 of 5

Stayed Dec 14-23 (nowhere near long enough) with three couples. We have been longtime visitors to Poipu area, always staying previously at the Kiahuna Plantation nearby. With three adult couples, three units at Kiahuna was expensive, so I started looking for options. Came across Mele Hale on VBRO, and am very happy with the entire experience. Everything about the location, home and property was as advertised. The home had everything that vacationers could want, from a fully equipped kitchen, beach towels and equipment, games, books, you name it. Brenekes and Poipu beaches were very walkable, though we occasionally drove take the beach chairs (also supplied by the house) with us. Kalipaki Joe's Sports Bar was a short walk away to watch the Seahawks on TV with other fans.

Because of this home and layout, we were able to enjoy a family style dinner prepared by my current and future sons in law, and enjoy each other's company in the comfort of the beautiful great room. With the bedroom wing separated from the living wing, it was easy for couples with different sleep schedules to coexist without disturbing each other. Perfect.

I could tell the home was well-cared for by the neatness of the maintenance shelves in the garage. The grounds were immaculate, as was the entire neighborhood of homes in the Poipu Kai Development. The only two minor things I would mention to management/maintenance was one of the portable fans in the bedroom was inoperable, and the front door needed to be rehung or adjusted, as it was difficult to close... minor little things in the big scheme of things. I am sure they will be taken care of in due course.

We look forward to our next visit to Kauai, and Mele Hale.

In short, we have found a new favorite location when we are traveling with at least one other couple. While we still love the closeness of the beach and grounds at Kiahuna, it is hard to beat Mele Hale for the combination of price, location, and accomodations.

Owner's Response: Thanks for the very thorough and supportive review, Kurt. We are thrilled that you had a great Kauai vacation and our home was part of that experience. We'll have our property manager replace the fan and take a look at adjusting the front door. We appreciate the heads-up on those items. We look forward to hosting you again in the future! Best regards, Chris and Janelle
