Spacious 3 BR, 2 BA home with A/C in Poipu Kai Resort, a few steps from beaches

This private single-level home provides the Aloha spirit in the beautiful and flourishing tropical landscape within the Lanai Villas section of Poipu Kai Resort. The moment that you enter our home you know this spacious 3 bedroom, 2 bath Kauai vacation home is designed for Hawaiian living at its best.

Mele Hale (Home of Song) is beautifully and uniquely decorated with style, comfort and relaxation in mind. It is spacious enough to enjoy a gathering of friends and family (up to 7 people), yet cozy and private enough for a couple who are looking for a luxurious and quiet vacation retreat. Enjoy the tropical breeze flowing throughout the house. Vaulted ceilings and numerous windows, create a fresh, airy vacation residence that invites indoor-outdoor living. For those warmer days, our home has guest controlled air conditioning in all bedrooms as well as the living, dining, and kitchen areas (starting in November 2017).

After exploring the many Kauai farmer’s markets, enjoy cooking for your loved ones in the fully equipped and well stocked kitchen. Or take it outdoors and cook in your own private, tropical backyard; equipped with a large gas grill and outdoor seating for 8. The backyard is truly an oasis. Kick back in the chaise lounge chairs at night, and thanks to the near absence of city lights, marvel at the glorious, Hawaiian night skies.

What really makes this home special is stepping out of your backyard and having access to the Poipu Kai green belt.

- You can stroll east to the Grand Hyatt, Anara Spa, Shipwreck Beach and the Maha'ulepa Heratige Trail. A perfect area to stroll and hike. It also offers world class surfing.

- Walking west brings you to the Poipu Kai resort pool, hot tub, and tennis courts (tennis courts available for a nominal fee).

- Brennecke’s Beach, and Poipu Beach Park, are another 5 minute walk past the pool. (If you don’t feel like walking, load up the car with all of our beach toys, chairs and towels; there is ample free parking next to these beaches). Poipu Beach Park offers some of the safest swimming in Hawaii with a life guard on duty seven days a week. Brenneke’s Beach is known for it’s easy to catch body boarding and body surfing waves. It is a favorite for locals and visitors alike. There is a protected area for swimmers and snorkeling with surf breaks off shore for the experienced surfer.

Our home is in an unbeatable location suited for exploring all that the sunny south shore has to offer! We hope that you enjoy your vacation on the Garden Isle!

About Janelle Owens

The home is owned by husband and wife, Chris and Janelle, who live primarily in the State of Washington. We have visited Hawaii many times with our kids and relatives and decided in 2014 to also become part-time residents (and maybe full-time someday). We are very active and outdoors oriented, and have had many adventures in Kauai and the other islands with our kids. We are very tuned in to how to be active and get the most out of Kauai, but also how to find the personal and meditative side of Kauai. Our goal is for all of our guests to create lifelong memories during their stay at our home, and have a very smooth and problem-free stay.

Janelle Owens purchased this house in 2014

Why Janelle Owens chose Poipu

Our very first visit to Hawaii was to Kauai and the Poipu Kai area back in 1992. We walked our 1-year old son in his stroller along the Poipu Kai public walkway to go back and forth to the beach, and fell in love with Kauai on that trip. Now that the kids grown up, we couldn't help but return to our Kauai beginnings and acquire our home, which we had strolled past countless times during the our prior visits.

What makes this house unique

The quiet and seclusion of a private home in a single family neighborhood, but with the amenities of the Poipu Kai Resort (pools, tennis), and just a few steps from two beautiful beaches. Oh, and of course, we should mention that Poipu is sunny and dry, so it's the place to go for a weather bulletproof vacation year-round.

Wonderful Mele Hale

  • 5 of 5

Stayed Dec 14-23 (nowhere near long enough) with three couples. We have been longtime visitors to Poipu area, always staying previously at the Kiahuna Plantation nearby. With three adult couples, three units at Kiahuna was expensive, so I started looking for options. Came across Mele Hale on VBRO, and am very happy with the entire experience. Everything about the location, home and property was as advertised. The home had everything that vacationers could want, from a fully equipped kitchen, beach towels and equipment, games, books, you name it. Brenekes and Poipu beaches were very walkable, though we occasionally drove take the beach chairs (also supplied by the house) with us. Kalipaki Joe's Sports Bar was a short walk away to watch the Seahawks on TV with other fans.

Because of this home and layout, we were able to enjoy a family style dinner prepared by my current and future sons in law, and enjoy each other's company in the comfort of the beautiful great room. With the bedroom wing separated from the living wing, it was easy for couples with different sleep schedules to coexist without disturbing each other. Perfect.

I could tell the home was well-cared for by the neatness of the maintenance shelves in the garage. The grounds were immaculate, as was the entire neighborhood of homes in the Poipu Kai Development. The only two minor things I would mention to management/maintenance was one of the portable fans in the bedroom was inoperable, and the front door needed to be rehung or adjusted, as it was difficult to close... minor little things in the big scheme of things. I am sure they will be taken care of in due course.

We look forward to our next visit to Kauai, and Mele Hale.

In short, we have found a new favorite location when we are traveling with at least one other couple. While we still love the closeness of the beach and grounds at Kiahuna, it is hard to beat Mele Hale for the combination of price, location, and accomodations.

Owner's Response: Thanks for the very thorough and supportive review, Kurt. We are thrilled that you had a great Kauai vacation and our home was part of that experience. We'll have our property manager replace the fan and take a look at adjusting the front door. We appreciate the heads-up on those items. We look forward to hosting you again in the future! Best regards, Chris and Janelle

Wonderful house with everything that you need

  • 5 of 5

My family (me, my husband, my parents, and my 2 daughters ages 1 and 3) stayed here for a week in September. The layout of the house was perfect for us, especially with the open kitchen/living area and the backyard. The house had everything that we needed -- sand toys, a portable crib, high chair, beach floaties, etc. We loved having the kiddie pool in the backyard for the girls to splash around in. The BBQ in the yard was really nice to have too. The location is great, with plenty of stores and restaurants a short drive away.

A few things that I wish I knew before hand: the pool and beach are walking distance if you don't have young kids. For us, it was just a little too far to walk with the kids and all the gear that we needed. But it was so easy to drive to the beach that it wasn't a big deal. Also, we were really HOT the whole week. There is a wonderful refreshing breeze in the backyard (and even better if you step outside the gate to the greenbelt!) but it doesn't seem to flow through the house that well, even though we had all the windows open and the fans going. We ended up spending a lot of time in the yard and on the greenbelt because it was so nice with the breeze.

Overall, we had a really enjoyable stay and would come back (especially if the house ever gets air conditioning installed!!). We celebrated my daughter's first birthday here so we have some really special memories of the house and the backyard!

Owner's Response: Mahalo nui for the nice review, Stephanie. We're thrilled that you had a memorable visit to Kauai and that our home was part of your successful stay. We do want our home to be a comfortable venue for families with children, and so we try to stock all the extras that will help with kids fun and comfort. In regards to the heat, we have heard feedback from you and others on that topic. In response, we have invested in air conditioning throughout our entire home. That installation took place in late October. We do hope we have the opportunity to host you and your family again in the future, and you'll be able to enjoy the A/C when you return. -Chris and Janelle

Great house, highly recommend!

  • 5 of 5

Just returned from Mele Hale this week. 4 adults, 2 kids in our group. We had a wonderful time, the house has a nice layout, super, super clean, and has everything you need. The property management is really prompt and brought us a couple things we needed right away. Yes, it gets warm, but we had extra fans to cool us. Hung out on the lanai every night as the backyard is beautiful. Didn't notice the neighbors at night. The neighborhood is gorgeous. Would come back in a minute!

Owner's Response: Thanks for the nice review, Kari! We're thrilled that you enjoyed your stay at our home. We love watching the stars in the evening from the lanai - they are amazing on most nights. We hope your vacation was memorable and that we can host you again in the future! -Janelle and Chris Update: Based on renter feedback, we've decided to invest in air conditioning for our home. It will be installed by November 1, 2017. It generally won't be needed from October through April, but will help with comfort on those hotter late spring and summer days.

Great vacation rental.

  • 5 of 5

This home was the perfect rental for our family. Spacious and inviting. Everything you need for the beach was easily located in the garage. The home provided all things required for a visiting toddler. They even had a baby pool. We enjoyed the convenient location and hiked the Greenbelt path daily to either Poi pu or Shipwreck Beach.

Owner's Response: Thanks for the kind review! We take pride in equipping out house to be family and child friendly. We know guests have much better things to do than lug kiddie gear on airplanes or shop for it while on vacation. We hope to have the honor of hosting you again on a future vacation. -Janelle and Chris

Nicely decorated. No privacy. Too hot!!! Needs air conditioning!

  • 1 of 5

Beautifully decorated condo, convenient to Poipu area, but a long walk to the pool and beaches. We stayed in the summer and the trade winds do not cool this place down! It was very uncomfortable to cook or shower. It was like an oven the entire trip even in the rainy days! There was no privacy in any of the bedrooms or bathrooms. I could hear everything the neighbors said and I'm sure they could hear everything too. Especially in the bathrooms! The vertical blinds were broken and made it hard to change without being seen from everywhere in the house or patio area. Otherwise we enjoyed our family and our time on Kauai but I highly recommend making some changes for the price.

Owner's Response: UPDATE: Based on renter feedback, we've decided to invest in air conditioning for our home. It will be installed by November 1, 2017. It generally won't be needed from October through April, but will help with comfort on those hotter late spring and summer days................................................................................. Aloha Marie Thanks for taking the time to submit a review. We take any review that is less than 5 stars very seriously; and we always address any issues and concerns that our valued guest might have had while staying in our home. Heat: Usually our guest find the summer temperature comfortable given the trade winds combined with our celling/floor fans. On Kauai, the average temperature for July is 84 degrees. This past July the average temperature was 86 degrees with one day reaching a maximum of 89. It was warmer than usual this summer and we understand that this affected your stay. We bought our house three years ago and it did not come with air conditioning, which is very common for most homes in the area. However, we are always striving to make improvements so that our guest have the most optimal experience, and we are exploring options on how we can provide a more comfortable and cool experience for our guest during the warmer months. Noise: Our home is in a residential neighborhood and many of the homes around us are rentals. It’s a family oriented neighborhood, so if there is sound from neighbors it’s typically low key conversations or children playing. It is noise that you would hear at any hotel or rental home in the area. Privacy: Our home is laid out so that each bedroom is very private; Additionally, the bedrooms are on a separate wing than the living area in the house. The landscaping around our home provides the home with an additional buffer and added privacy. I am so sorry that one of the vertical blinds was malfunctioning. We have a property manager on the island and they are available 24/7 to help with issues such as that. Distance to the beach: It is a ten-minute walk two of the loveliest beaches on Kauai. It might be a few minutes longer with younger children. It is also a very short drive to either of these beaches with ample public parking at Poipu State beach. We truly do apologizes that it was not a 5 star stay for you and your family, but we hope that you still had an enjoyable vacation. Mahalo, Janelle and Chris

Great location but just TOO HOT!

  • 3 of 5

First let me start by saying that we stayed here at the end of June 2017.

The house has a great layout with all of the rooms spread out nicely for privacy and the location is perfect. You can walk in two different directions and be at the beach within 10 mins or less, but there was ONE big downside for us.

The house was TOO HOT!

The house has a great front yard with a gate but because of all the greenery it blocked any cool breeze that you desperately need to help cool the house down. Also the sun hits the living room, master bedroom and courtyard all day heating up and keeping the house hot for the rest of the day and night.

So if you're traveling with little children who still require a good nap (which we were) beware this house makes it very uncomfortable to stay inside during that time (even with the extra house fans that are provided).

Another downside from the house being so hot is that you have to leave your windows open at night, but when the third bedroom backs up to two different backyards and both neighbors are enjoying themselves outside, it can make it very difficult for one to fall asleep.

So here's my final thought; if you don't have to be home during the day then this house would suffice but if you have to be home or just want to lounge around and you enjoy a cooler home, then I would say that this house wouldn't be for you.
