This private single-level home provides the Aloha spirit in the beautiful and flourishing tropical landscape within the Lanai Villas section of Poipu Kai Resort. The moment that you enter our home you know this spacious 3 bedroom, 2 bath Kauai vacation home is designed for Hawaiian living at its best.

Mele Hale (Home of Song) is beautifully and uniquely decorated with style, comfort and relaxation in mind. It is spacious enough to enjoy a gathering of friends and family (up to 7 people), yet cozy and private enough for a couple who are looking for a luxurious and quiet vacation retreat. Enjoy the tropical breeze flowing throughout the house. Vaulted ceilings with fans, and numerous windows, create a fresh, airy vacation residence that invites indoor-outdoor living.

After exploring the many Kauai farmer’s markets, enjoy cooking for your loved ones in the fully equipped and well stocked kitchen. Or take it outdoors and cook in your own private, tropical backyard; equipped with a large gas grill and outdoor seating for 8. The backyard is truly an oasis. Kick back in the chaise lounge chairs at night, and thanks to the near absence of city lights, marvel at the glorious, Hawaiian night skies.

What really makes this home special is stepping out of your backyard and having access to the Poipu Kai green belt.

- You can stroll east to the Grand Hyatt, Anara Spa, Shipwreck Beach and the Maha'ulepa Heratige Trail. A perfect area to stroll and hike. It also offers world class surfing.

- Walking west brings you to the Poipu Kai resort pool, hot tub, and tennis courts (tennis courts available for a nominal fee).

- Brennecke’s Beach, and Poipu Beach Park, are another 5 minute walk past the pool. (If you don’t feel like walking, load up the car with all of our beach toys, chairs and towels; there is ample free parking next to these beaches). Poipu Beach Park offers some of the safest swimming in Hawaii with a life guard on duty seven days a week. Brenneke’s Beach is known for it’s easy to catch body boarding and body surfing waves. It is a favorite for locals and visitors alike. There is a protected area for swimmers and snorkeling with surf breaks off shore for the experienced surfer.

About Janelle Owens

The home is owned by husband and wife, Chris and Janelle, who live primarily in the State of Washington. We have visited Hawaii many times with our kids and relatives and decided in 2014 to also become part-time residents (and maybe full-time someday). We are very active and outdoors oriented, and have had many adventures in Kauai and the other islands with our kids. We are very tuned in to how to be active and get the most out of Kauai, but also how to find the personal and meditative side of Kauai. Our goal is for all of our guests to create lifelong memories during their stay at our home, and have a very smooth and problem-free stay.

Why Janelle Owens chose South Shore

Our very first visit to Hawaii was to Kauai and the Poipu Kai area back in 1992. We walked our 1-year old son in his stroller along the Poipu Kai public walkway to go back and forth to the beach, and fell in love with Kauai on that trip. Now that the kids grown up, we couldn't help but return to our Kauai beginnings and acquire our home, which we had strolled past countless times during the our prior visits.

What makes this house unique

The quiet and seclusion of a private home in a single family neighborhood, but with the amenities of the Poipu Kai Resort (pools, tennis), and just a few steps from two beautiful beaches. Oh, and of course, we should mention that Poipu is sunny and dry, so it's the place to go for a weather bulletproof vacation year-round.

Wonderful Mele Hale

Stayed Dec 14-23 (nowhere near long enough) with three couples. We have been longtime visitors to Poipu area, always staying previously at the Kiahuna Plantation nearby. With three adult couples, three units at Kiahuna was expensive, so I started looking for options. Came across Mele Hale on VBRO, and am very happy with the entire experience. Everything about the location, home and property was as advertised. The home had everything that vacationers could want, from a fully equipped kitchen, beach towels and equipment, games, books, you name it. Brenekes and Poipu beaches were very walkable, though we occasionally drove take the beach chairs (also supplied by the house) with us. Kalipaki Joe's Sports Bar was a short walk away to watch the Seahawks on TV with other fans.

Because of this home and layout, we were able to enjoy a family style dinner prepared by my current and future sons in law, and enjoy each other's company in the comfort of the beautiful great room. With the bedroom wing separated from the living wing, it was easy for couples with different sleep schedules to coexist without disturbing each other. Perfect.

I could tell the home was well-cared for by the neatness of the maintenance shelves in the garage. The grounds were immaculate, as was the entire neighborhood of homes in the Poipu Kai Development. The only two minor things I would mention to management/maintenance was one of the portable fans in the bedroom was inoperable, and the front door needed to be rehung or adjusted, as it was difficult to close... minor little things in the big scheme of things. I am sure they will be taken care of in due course.

We look forward to our next visit to Kauai, and Mele Hale.

In short, we have found a new favorite location when we are traveling with at least one other couple. While we still love the closeness of the beach and grounds at Kiahuna, it is hard to beat Mele Hale for the combination of price, location, and accomodations.

Great vacation spot

I don't think we could have picked a better place and home. The area was great because of the easy walk to the beach and we were all were very happy with the gear available. The home itself was set up in an organized and relaxed way. There were 5 adults and two children and it was perfect for us. And the owners were great to work with. A marvelous time was had by all.

A great place! Just as advertised!

We had a wonderful time. The house and location were amazing. We did have some discomfort with humidity. But we expected that as there is no a/c. The queen bedroom is lovely but the slider in that bedroom did have to be closed at night for security, so there was not as much air flow as in the other bedrooms. Having a way to lock the front gate so the slider could be left open would be nice. But we adjusted and enjoyed. I would suggest getting brighter LED lights for the kitchen, after dark it was very dim in there. Otherwise everything a person needed was there. Even night lights, thank you! And the night skies were as promised!!! Full of Stars!!!

We have upgraded the lighting in the kitchen, with new under-cabinet LED lighting and pendant lights above the sink. That greatly brightens the kitchen up. And we've added a deadbolt on the courtyard gate, so that it can be locked, allowing guests to leave the courtyard sliding doors open in the evening. To further improve ventilation throughout the home, we've replaced the large picture windows in the back bedroom and the living room with louvered windows. Great house for our entire family

We rented this house for a week with our sons and their wives. First of all the location was perfect. The pathway was so convenient to use for our trips to the beach, the pool, watching the sunrise in front of the Grand Hyatt, the sunsets at Poipu Beach, happy hour at Kalapaki Joes and dinner at the Grand Hyatt. It was so nice having the beach chairs, mats and toys. Even though the surf was pretty rough at Brennecke's and Shipwreak we were able to find another beach to use the boogie boards.

The house was beautiful and the beds very comfortable. We enjoyed relaxing in the backyard (very private) and watching the stars at night.

It was pretty warm during our stay so were very glad there were so many windows and doors to open and keep the breezes blowing through the house.

We would definitely use this house again.

Being so close to be able to easily walk to several beaches is definitely a nice feature of our home. While Shipwreck Beach in front of the Grand Hyatt, while scenic, is often too rough for swimming, Poipu Beach a few minutes walk to the west is one of the safest on the island, with a protective breakwater and full-time lifeguard on duty. Even toddlers can wade there on a high surf day. August and September (when you stayed) are typically the two warmest months on the island. To make sure our home stays cool, we've just finished installing new louvered windows in the bedroom and living room, to allow the cooling trade winds to have full effect. Mele Hale

Wonderful property and great location and access to pool and beaches. Would have been more comfortable with A/C (especially while dressing for a wedding) but opening up windows and turning on fans helped quite a bit. Very clean home with everything we needed for a week. Really liked the walkway behind the house that led to Hyatt and beaches one direction and tennis courts, pools and beaches the other direction. Would definitely recommend to others.

Amazing Property with the BEST Location!

We thoroughly enjoyed our trip to Kauai and staying at this home was amazing. Great location to everything. Walking to the beaches right out the back gate was wonderful. My boys surfed at Poipu Beach and the Sheraton, went scuba diving every day just down the road and everything we needed or wanted to do was within a 5-10 minute walk or drive. The Grand Hyatt only being a quick walk away was a great way to stroll the beaches at night with all the beautiful serenity surrounding the grounds. Their Tidepools restaurant was amazing. Wherever our days took us, this location was the best. Very well maintained and taken care of with all of the amenities you would want to have in a home. It was so easy for us to book this VRBO and had no issues. I would recommend this home to all of our family and friends!

We will be back again!

We are in a single family home neighborhood, with the property abutting the convenient Poipu Kai public walkway which connect Poipu Beach and Shipwreck Beaches. It takes 7-10 minutes to walk to either of these beaches, with Shipwreck Beach adjacent to the Grand Hyatt Kauai.

OUTCLEANING CHARGES: As you will note below, outclean charges vary with the size of the unit. When you depart, a professional cleaning service comes to wash the balance of linens and towels and prepare for the next visitors. We expect the rental unit to be left in a “neat” condition. These charges are subject to change because of incremental price increases of the cleaning staff.

DEPOSITS: A security/damage deposit is required with 10 days of your reservation. If deposit is not received within 10 days, your reservation will automatically cancel. Refunds are after departure in most instances (there are some properties where we must wait up to 45 days for the phone bills to be verified) less extraordinary cleaning, missing items, long distance charges or any damages that exceed normal wear and tear. There is a $35 non-refundable processing fee due at the time of rent payment.

CANCELLATIONS: Notification of cancellation must be received at least 60 days prior to your planned arrival. (120 days notification from December 15 through January 15). All cancellations are subject to a $50 cancellation fee. A cancellation notification of less then 60 days (120 day holiday season) results in forfeiture of full rent. Guests are responsible for the entire time booked. No rentals refunds are given for early departure or late cancellation.

OCCUPANCY: Occupancy is limited to number of confirmed guests. Receptions, luau’s, and parties of any kind are strictly prohibited.

PAYMENT: All properties will require full payment 60-days prior to arrival (120-days during holiday season). Payment to be made by cash, personal, business, or travelers checks. WE DO NOT ACCEPT CREDIT CARDS. A service charge of $25 will be assessed on all checks returned from your financial institution. Our office is open from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm Monday-Friday.
