Serene vacation spot with picture perfect views

  • 5 of 5

I am someone that appreciates the little things in life... and it really was the little things that Kati offered in her home that made this trip. The views are unparalleled and the sunsets were something to marvel every evening. We have 4 little ones and were unexpectedly delighted to discover our very own aquarium to wade around in at the foot of the stairs. The tide pools delighted the kids and adults alike. Every morning and evening the kids would beg to go down so they could see what sea life had appeared or left (sea cucumbers, crabs, tiny fish, and plenty of gorgeous shells to collect).

The house itself was spacious and well equipped. A huge kitchen, washer and dryer, a gorgeous deck and a lower patio area with a grill. We took advantage of every inch of outdoor space. As other reviews have mentioned, the AC is only in the upstairs bedrooms. But did you really come to Hawaii to sit in an air conditioned house? When you needed to cool off or time for bed the AC in the rooms was powerful and quickly cooled the rooms.

On the days we went to the beach Kati offers a cooler, beach towels, water shoes, as well as assorted water toys. She even had sunscreen on hand in case you forgot yours or ran out!

Our family can't wait to go back. This was a once in a lifetime experience I hope to repeat often.

Love! Love! Love! Mermaid Manor!

  • 5 of 5

So sad to say we leave out tomorrow! This home (I say home because that's exactly how you feel while you're here) is stunningly gorgeous! Wonderful trade winds to keep you cool during the day (and when they were lacking we got in the water. I mean seriously, it's a tropical location). The A/C was divine when it came time to sleep at night, and yes it is only in the bedrooms as it says in the description of the house. (Some people need to learn how to read). Tide pools galore, sea cucumbers, mollusks, fish, crabs, hermit crabs all in the tide pools steps below the back lanai. Geckos seen multiple times. You might even occasionally see a certain fur baby. Don't be scared, he's rather sweet & soft. ;-) There are three balconies besides the huge lanai that has tiki torches and 2 BBQ grills, flower beds, chaise lounges. The middle lanai has to die for recliners that would make perfect beds for kids (who can survive without A/C, yes. Slight eye roll about that). We saw spinner dolphins in the bay. The waves crashing mere steps from you were astounding!!

The owner was the kindest, most accommodating person I've ever met. She went well above and beyond during our stay. I've never seen a host as genuine and helpful as she was.

The kitchen was amazing. Everything you need to prepare meals here, along with extras (spices, etc...). I'm not really sure where the people stayed that gave this house a poor review, because it couldn't have been this house. It was immaculately clean. I would recommend this property to anyone. And I'm rather particular when it comes to where I'm going to reside for extended periods of time. Hope to be back soon!!!!

Aloha & Mahalo from the Okies!

I would rather not

  • 2 of 5

The place has a magnificent view! I will not take that away from it. The bedrooms were beautiful. We rented for 15 nights in January. There were 3 couples, with 2 bedrooms. The owner of the home was kind enough to rent out her apartment, which was downstairs, so that did accommodate the 6 of us. The issues we had with this home was bugs, as in roaches. The owners apartment had the most, which was where I stayed. They were in the garbage compactor in the kitchen that did not work. When asked for pest control, someone did come out, but then I was told that if the pest control did not come out, we would not have seen any roaches.. BULL, I lived in florida and you always needed a pest control company. They were also in the bed, and at that point, I slept on the couch in the living room. She also had about 6 bottles of bug spray under her sink. Interesting. The owner was very nice, up until we had our problems. She then became nasty. ALSO, there was NO hot water due to the fact that the hot water heater was unplugged. I was told with attitude, that the hot water runs on solar. We did not have hot water for the dishwasher, or for hand washing the dishes. If someone showered in the evening, there was NO hot water for the morning showers. A plumber was called in and was baffled because he could not find the switch to turn the hot water on. He roamed the house for 1 hour. The second gentlemen came and once again after 1 hour he finally found the switch. It is in the laundry room, covered by a blank plate. So if you stay there make sure that, that plug is plugged in. So once again, the place is stunning, just beware of these issues. Sorry for this review, but it was very uncomfortable hoping that the roaches were not crawling on you at night time.

Owner's Response: Aloha, I do feel an obligation to respond to this malicious review. I did everything humanly possible to accommodate these guests. There were no cans of bug spray under the sink because, I had not had any complaints from prior guests concerning pests. I even contacted the guests that had checked out four days previously. No pests. I was on the mainland and after receiving multiple texts, I turned over the situation to my professional and reputable property manager. Nor had I had any complaints from guests concerning the hot water. The owner of the solar company found the electric back-up. Again, no other guests had mentioned lack of hot water so, there was no need. I, emphatically did not in any way get "nasty". In fact, I did not charge them for the first night because of their late arrival. I gave them a discount for their entire stay. And I also gave them a late check out. I encourage all future guests to not dwell on a negative review but to embrace the positive experiences from the majority of guests that have stayed at Mermaid Manor in the past. And to those of you who plan to visit in the future, I welcome you with enthusiasm and Aloha. So does my 14 year old dog, Dillon

AC is only in upstairs bedrooms

  • 3 of 5

This house is in fact right on the water and the view is stunning, but it does not have central air conditioning and it faces the direct sun most of the day, so the house gets very hot until after dark. You'll want to spend most of your time in the bedroom because that's the only location of the A/C unit. Opening the doors and windows for the ocean breeze (when there is one) also lets in the bugs and salt air that makes the tile floor in the kitchen very slippery. With the appropriate expectations, it's reasonable to love this house, but we found it uncomfortable. Still the owners were very nice and accommodating.

Perfect place to celebrate our wedding!

  • 5 of 5

We spent a week here celebrating our wedding and had an amazing time. Such an amazing place! It has everything we could have asked for. Great location, just a short walk to the main drag in Kailua. Spectacular waterfront with floor to ceiling views on every floor. There are steps down to a rock pool that was a very popular place to hang out. The facilities are amazing, the kitchen is huge and very well equipped. Tons of fridge space which came in very handy. Lots of space to entertain guests, the lower level has a beautiful bar, tiki torches, tons of seating and two bbq’s. The yard is immaculate with a fish pond, palm trees, and a lemon tree in the front yard (the lemons make amazing margaritas). We would go back in a heartbeat (I am pretty sure my wife is already packing!)

The Kona region of the Big Island goes beyond Hawaii's traditional offerings. Sure, there's ample sun, surf and sandy beaches, but the Kona coast features so much more. Step back in time and explore Kona's history, taste some of the world's richest coffee and view marine animals in the clear waters of the surrounding Pacific Ocean. These activities and more a wait along the Big Island's Kona coast.

Location: Kona is one of seven regions on Hawaii's Big Island, encompassing a 60-mile stretch of the western coast. The Big Island sits at the southeastern end of Hawaii's island chain, and is 4,038 square miles, double the combined size of Hawaii's other seven islands.

History: Kailua-Kona, also called Kailua-Kona Town, is a city in the Kona region and was, at one point, home to King Kamehameha in the early 1800s. The Historic Kailua Village in Kailua-Kona pays homage to Kamehameha and other Hawaiian royalty with tours of historic sites such as Hulihee Palace and Mokuaikaua Church. Also located on the Kona coast is Kealakekua Bay, where captain James Cook first landed on the Big Island and eventually was killed, in 1779.

Historical Parks: Kealakekua Bay State Historical Park has a monument to Captain James Cook. Near Kealakekua Bay is the 180-acre Puuhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park, which was once a sacred place of refuge. The Kaloko-Honokohau National Historic Park is a 1,160-acre park just north of Kailua-Kona that is home to historic temples and ancient petroglyphs.

Beach Activities: There are many white-sand beaches and ocean activities available on the Kona coast, from snorkeling and surfing to whale watching and dinner cruises. The waters along the Kona coast are calm and clear, providing perfect visibility of green sea turtles, fish and other marine life while snorkeling and scuba diving. There are surfing schools that offer individual and group lessons, sport fishing charters, dinner cruises and boat tours that will put you up close to whales, dolphins, manta rays and green sea turtles.

Things to Do: There's plenty to do in Kona aside from beach and ocean activities. Kona's small towns have many shops and galleries. Take a tour up to the 14,000-foot summit of nearby Mauna Kea, either during the daytime, to enjoy spectacular views, or at night, to take in some stargazing. Visit Kona in October to take in the annual Ironman World Championship, a long-distance triathlon that attracts some of the world's top athletes.

Kona Coffee: Kona has many excellent restaurants that offer dishes featuring fresh seafood from the Pacific Ocean, but the real treat on this part of the island is Kona coffee. There are many coffee farms in Kona, the only place where Kona coffee beans are grown to produce 100 percent pure Kona coffee. The conditions in Kona are just right for growing these rare beans--elevation, constant cloud cover and rich, volcanic soil. Aside from taking home some of this famous beverage, visitors can tour many of the area's coffee farms, and visit the Kona Coffee Living History Farm.
