Guestbook comments from the manager

I stayed at the Kaikea Hale in November of last year with two friends and we all thought it was a great place. It is located right on the water and we started and ended every day watching the surfers and occasional dolphins play off of our lanai. The home itself is clean and well maintained with a full kitchen and two baths. We had a problem with the alarm (our fault) when we first arrived and received immediate help from the property management company. The house is within easy walking distance of downtown Kailua right off the main highway - which can be noisy from time to time. Hawaii can get hot and humid (it's tropical!) but we found there were enough fans and windows to keep us comfortable. We enjoyed it so much we have booked it again for this September.

Shack on the beach

  • 1 of 5

The house is what it is. It sits on the beach. It's walking distance to Kona. It is grossly oversold in its description. First of all there is no AC. It doesn't say that there is; however, you need to know it's like a swamp. We were so hot it was nearly unbearable. There is a washer and dryer - but it's outside. As in take your laundry outside the house to the side yard. We were fortunate enough to have rain our last night so I had to do laundry in the rain. There were ants in the pantry. And kitchen. And bathrooms. And bedrooms. There were cockroaches on the patio. You have to leave the windows open because of the AC situation, but then more bugs come in. The shower in the master bath is so short that I'm 5'6" and could just barely fit under the shower head. There is a big gap under the front door between the bottom of the door and the floor. Lastly Honls beach 2 houses down is tiny. It's rocky. The sand is terrible. My kids hated it. We ended up having to drive to other beaches. So it is what it is. It's ocean front and a nice view and that is it.

Owner's Response: Aloha Tiffany, I am sorry to hear that you were unhappy with the accommodations. It is true, this home does not have air conditioning and is not advertised as having this amenity. There are ceiling fans in every room to help with the tropical weather, I am sorry this was not enough. Honl’s beach is a great spot to hang out and watch the surfers. Although it is sandy on the beach, it is rocky in the water and not an ideal swimming beach. Luckily there are a couple of swimming beaches nearby. The home does have regular pest control, unfortunately in the tropics there is always the possibility of insects, and if there is a problem a technician can be dispatched to perform an interim spray. I hope that you were still able to enjoy your Hawaiian vacation. There are quite a few items considered in pricing of a vacation home, I do hope that you were still able to find value in your rental.
