Photo: Howie Guja Interior designer Celerie Kemble Curry has been shuttling between the sleepy village of Bellport, about 60 miles from Manhattan, on Long Island’s South Shore, and her apartment in Manhattan since she first bought here a few years ago. “I was captured by the old houses, great summertime kid activities and lack of pretense,” the mother of three, 41, says. “Bellport is peaceful, cozy and not working too hard at being anything other than what it is.” Curry claims to be a homebody, though she’s grateful for nice neighbors, who “wave as they walk by, forgive/ignore an occasional skinny dip and let us steal from their veggie garden.” If she spent more time off the grounds of her estate, she’d likely run into other media friendlies who are making this newly rediscovered town a white-hot—though still low-key—summer spot. The appeal of Bellport is obvious. Mark Petheram, who grew up here and has run Old Purchase Properties for the past 32 years, has seen his town of about 1,100 homes and 3,000 residents stay pretty much the same since he was a kid. “What people say the most is that it’s really like it was a decade ago,” says the real estate agent, who has done most of the major deals in town. “There is almost no new construction.” Built in the 1800s as a deep-water port, Bellport became a summer retreat for Manhattanites around t
What makes this House unique
Why Everyone is Rushing Off to Bellport, NY This small East Coast village has smitten the likes of royals, Instagram heavyweights, and anyone looking for a picture-perfect getaway. Here's everything you need to know about the new 'it' location spot for summer—and every season. by LOGAN SYKES 4.9k Shares SHARE TWEET PIN E-MAIL Bellport, NY, lies on the South Shore of Long Island, and is the happy medium (both physically and figuratively) between Manhattan and the Hamptons. With its colonial feel and beachy surroundings, Bellport is everything a vacationer wants and needs. Family-friendly? Check. Sprawling views of the sunset and sunrise? Check. Free of that hectic Hamptons traffic? Check. And close enough to the city that you can make your way back without feeling light years away, but there's still a comfortable distance between you and the office? Check, and check. Bellport is many things, but most of all, it is a sanctuary for those who still treasure community and good old-fashioned relaxation. This is not the destination for those looking to wear platform designer wedges to the beach or dine with the 'who's who' of Whereverville. Bellport has somehow managed to remain preserved in a time where neighbors were, well, neighborly, free time actually existed (and was treasured), and there was nothing wrong with a little (or a lot of) peace and quiet. Glad you like your stay
Great stay at this lovely home!
This home has been lovely renovated and the owner was very responsive to any questions, fantastic location, easy walk to town too.
Great stay, well be back
Cute, cozy, comfortable and clean
Great little cottage with an enormous yard and pool. Too bad it was April and too early for swim season. I would highly recommend this place. Jean, the owner, was super helpful and on top of things which made for a stress-free trip. Great location and nice area for a walk after dinner or long day with family. Enjoyed Peter's on the Green just down the street for dinner one night and it looked like some great dining options in downtown Bellport. We would definitely stay here again, it was so much nicer than a hotel.
Our host was great, the house and town were lovely. Really perfect location for family with small kids or a quiet, relaxing get away without the Hamptons/Jersey Shore traffic. Two fantastic beaches close by and the pool was perfect. Nice selection of restaurants too.
