About Jared Leonard
I'm the Pitmaster/Chef/Owner of BBQ Supply Co. - a true southern smokehouse in Chicago. We built this property to allow folks from Chicago to enjoy cooking BBQ while getting some fresh air/relaxation out in the country, while staying within a reasonable driving distance from the city (2 hours). The Rock River BBQ Ranch is a BBQ Cooking destination, situated on the Rock River.
Jared Leonard purchased this House in 2014
Why Jared Leonard chose Beloit
This property provides outdoor cooking enthusiasts all of the necessary equipment to make a great BBQ experience! BBQ Smokers, Grills, Ovens, fire pits, cast iron, and all of the tools you'll need. While the meat is cooking - enjoy the river! We have a custom horseshoe dock with a waterfront patio to enjoy the country river setting.
What makes this House unique
This house is built for outdoor cooking enthusiasts. What better time to craft a beautiful meal from scratch, one that may have taken hours to create, then when you're on vacation? Only problem with that: most vacation rentals are more about the region & the house/bedrooms, and less about on-site cooking amenities. This house sleeps 8, and has been totally remodeled with reclaimed materials, wide-plank hardwood floors, leather sofas, stainless appliances, butcher block counters, and more - but the real amenities in this experience are outdoors. 4 outdoor smokers, wood-fired grills, a pizza oven, 2 fire pits, commercial-grade stainless steel prep tables, and all the utensils/equipment/smoking woods, etc. that you need to craft your dream BBQ meal for your guests.

Property has issues
We arrived to a notice posted by the city that the property was not to be occupied as a rental. We immediately contacted the property manager and were told to go ahead and move in. A while later we were told that if anyone asked we were to say we were relatives of the owner and were "staying" not "renting", I responded that I would not lie. We were later told that the issue was with the lawyers so we should not have a problem.
Be aware that one of the bedrooms can only be accessed by going through other bedrooms. Those sharing the house had better be family or very close friends.
The beds are VERY well used and were not comfortable.
Some dishes in the kitchen were sticky and required washing prior to use.
While we did not use them, the grills did not seem clean and some seemed in disrepair.
The listing says there is an outside shower but we could not locate it.
Cell phone service is awful, the area will drain your battery quickly.
We arrived in town a couple of hours early and were able to check in.
The caretaker was responsive to our report of a clogged drain in the shower and rectified it quickly.
Thank you for staying with us. PLEASE NOTE: THE TOWNSHIP OF BELOIT HAS ASKED US TO STOP RENTING OUR PRIVATELY OWNED HOME, WHICH IS A REQUEST THAT VIOLATES A STATE LAW. WE ARE WORKING THROUGH THE ISSUE AND SHOULD BE READY BY SUMMER 2019.
We (I and some cousins) stayed here while gathering for our Uncle's memorial. The home offered plenty of room. The only limitation was 1 full bathroom but we just scheduled showers on the day of the event and it worked fine. The kitchen (indoor and outdoor) facilities made meals easier since we were together for 2 full days. One of our cousins had a birthday so we had a birthday party with 17 family members outdoor. The setting and facility couldn't have been any better for that event. If we return, we will definitely stay here again.
B&B BBQ. What more do you need to say ?
Great if you want to relax by the fire and cook some smoked BBQ. Exactly what we were looking for !
Incredible Unique Propoerty.
My buddies and I stayed here for our guys weekend, and we were blown away. This placed checked all the boxes. Huge yard for wiffleball, horseshoes, etc. Fire pit for late night philosophy. Accessible dock for fishing. All the grilling, smoking, and wood fire pizza cooking you can shake a stick at. Fully accommodating and comfortable garage for late night drinking and poker. The whole place wired for music.
Couple all that with extremely comfortable living quarters, this place is the perfect get away for a group of friends or family. We're already planning a return visit.
Thanks again Jared!
Paradise in Beloit
This is the perfect quick getaway for anyone. We have an now-annual guy's weekend up at the Rock River BBQQ ranch. It's ideal for practicing your smoking or grilling, while preparing a feast, and idling away the day with bags or horseshoes or conversation on the comfortable deck and huge lawn, fading down into the sun-dappled river. It's an easy drive from Chicago, but you feel like you leave everything behind. It's a big comfortable house with ample bedding, and everything you need to share the finer things in life: friendship, family, and food. Highly recommend.
A fun weekend away for food-enthusiasts...except for the squirrels in the attic!
The Cons: There was a family of squirrels (or perhaps bats) living in the eaves between two of the bedrooms, and the squeaks and chirps were hard to get used to—although with the help of the noise from the window unit and fans, we blocked most of the sounds and everyone managed to get a good night's sleep. Both rooms smelled a bit like a hamster cage when we arrived, but the smell dissipated once we ran the A/C. When I texted Jared the next morning, he said he would take a look the Monday after we left to see what he could do. The local maintenance guy came by while we were there, and said that he'd known about this problem for a while (!) and that they planned to put a new roof on the house soon...so maybe it won't be an issue for the next visitors.
The outdoor furniture on the porch was still covered in tarps which had accumulated rainwater and spider webs (maybe we were the first visitors of the season?). We didn't take the tarps off, so we didn't wind up using the porch and instead spent most of our time on the patio. Some of the cooking equipment in the garage wasn't clean/usable. The house is also close to a noisy bridge over the river, and it's much closer to the neighboring properties than the photos make it seem.
The Pros: I rented the Rock River BBQ Ranch for a weekend away from Chicago with a big group of friends. We mostly wanted to try out the outdoor cooking equipment. We didn't wind up using either of the smokers, but the pizza oven was GREAT and the gas grill worked just fine. And the fire pit on the patio was perfect: we hung out around it every night, grilled, and even cooked some lamb overnight, buried in coals. The sound system worked great, and it was awesome to have music outside. We played all the outdoor games (including zip line!), and went fishing off the pier (although sadly, we mostly caught carp). Beloit is cute, and Jared had good recommendations for what to do in town (we'd recommend the Anthropology Department Museum at Beloit College). The house is roomy and didn't feel cramped, even with all the bedrooms in-use. However, there's only one shower, which can get a little tricky with a big group.
Overall, a really fun weekend—only marred by the squirrels/bats and the loud roadways. Otherwise, the only thing that would make it better would be if Beloit had a boat rental place!
Rock Country is full of rural northern Midwest charm - only 2 hours from Chicago!
