This lovely, historic house in the oldest, quaintest section of La Garde Freinet, built in 1850 and recently lovingly updated, will make your stay in this unique village very special.
The sunny main floor consists of a new open plan kitchen - where you can cook and socialize with your family or guests - a dining table which will seat 6 people, and a cozy sitting area with flat screen TV, French cable and Wifi for your comfort and entertainment. English speakers will enjoy the IPTV box with a vast array of English TV channels. The kitchen is fully equipped with new appliances: fridge, stove, electric stove top, dishwasher, microwave, and Nespresso coffee machine.
The second floor houses a large, airy master bedroom with king bed, armoire, dresser, mirrors and extra hanging rack. There is lots of room for stowing your bags and belongings. The iron and ironing board are kept here. There is also a sparkling clean, good sized bathroom on this level, with bathtub and shower, shiny new fittings, lots of towel racks and storage space. There is a hair dryer stowed under the sink, and linens and towels are provided. The washer and dryer are also here.
On the top floor, there is another bright bedroom with two windows for that lovely mountain breeze. You will sleep so well! This bedroom has a double bed and another single bed, which can also be used as a sofa for napping or reading.
From the second floor stairway window, there is a view of the ancient fort from which La Garde Freinet gets its name, and from the upstairs bedroom skylight windows, you can see La Croix (the cross that watches over our village from the crest above). And there are lovely views from the terrace across the rooftops to the mountains in the distance.
Just outside this bedroom door is the door to the rooftop terrace, or 'terrasse tropezienne.' This roomy terrace has a pretty vintage metal table with 6 chairs
for lunches or dinners, and there are chaise longues for your use for very private sun-tanning.
Back on the main floor now, outside the east-facing front door, which catches the warm morning sun, there is a little café table with chairs, where you can enjoy morning coffee and croissants amongst the potted geraniums and lauriers. You can plan your days of sightseeing or marketing in the neighboring villages, hiking the many very scenic trails around La Garde Freinet, or touring the glorious beaches of the Cote d'Azur just 20 to 30 minutes drive from your door.
This house has been furnished as a home as opposed to a rental unit, with all of the comforts and amenities the owner needs to feel at home here: including a well-equipped kitchen, and clean, new furnishings and creature comforts.
The history of the house and neighbourhood is an interesting one. Constructed in the mid 1800s, probably to cater to the men working in the cork industry that was booming then. It is said that the reason the tiny street and square attached were named Rue and Place de l'Amour is because the houses were bordellos servicing the cork workers.
This house may have been a 'house of love' at one time, but it was also home for many years to one of France's most decorated army generals.
The village of La Garde Freinet has a fascinating history - worth delving into - and now is home to an eclectic group of people living in and around it, who make it a very cool and fun place to be. Enjoy evenings of people watching as you dine outdoors on the cute, quaint main street - just steps from the house. Market days are Sundays and Wednesdays, always a festive vibe those mornings; join the locals having coffee at the Bar du Soleil after your browse through the stalls.
Be sure to hike up to the Roches Blanches, the glimmering quartz precipice above the village, overlooking the Golfe of St Tropez. You can see the Mediterranean shimmering in the distance, and the vast view of the plains that made the Saracens carve out their cave-like dwellings here, that gave the village its start a thousand years ago.
It's a 'merveilleux' place to rest and restore - fabulous food, great wine, exercise in the fresh mountain air, swim in the sea. What could be better?
Come and see for yourselves why the owner and many, many others are drawn to this special village and surrounding area. Come see!

About Judith Boyce
Hi! I'm an active professional woman, living and working in Bermuda. Canadian by birth, I'm grateful to be able to live in paradise, to be able to run, bike, swim and play golf all year around, and to enjoy the social aspects of life in a small, friendly country.
Judith Boyce purchased this House in 2014
Why Judith Boyce chose La Garde-Freinet
I fell in love with La Garde Freinet at my first visit there. The people, the food, the wine, the hiking and biking, the air, those sparkly rocks and peaks! The energy - it's amazing. The house has a special history - as does this neighbourhood of the old part of La Garde Freinet - I was drawn to it. What more can I say?
What makes this House unique
Quaint. Provençal. Recently renovated, cleaned, painted, updated - but many historic features have been preserved. Convenient - walk to restaurants, shops, or hike from the front door. Drive to St Tropez and the Mediterranean in 20 minutes. Quiet. Lovely neighbours - French, German, Swedish - so cosmopolitan - yet very private.

A PERFECT DREAM HOUSE IN A WONDERFUL VILLAGE!!
This village house exceeded our expectations. My only regret is that I wish we would have stayed longer. Needless to say, we will be back. Judy, your directions from Nice to La Garde Freinet were perfect. Your house was beautifully decorated, and the assistance from Becky was very much appreciated! The neighbors and people of La Garde Freinet were fabulous, food and markets outstanding and the location was very easy to drive to neighboring villages. I will definitely be back and friends are asking for information regarding your village house for future trips. Thank you so much!!!!
Thank you for your thoughtful review, Rhonda! I'm so happy you enjoyed the house and our wonderful village, and I'd be delighted to have you come and stay again. Happy travels! Judy
We enjoyed the house and location. Clean, comfy and homey! Plenty of pre-visit assistance and advice from the owner and property managers. Not too much to do in town at this time of year but we did enjoy the museum near the tourist office and visiting the local market, restaurant and patisserie. The weather was much cooler and wetter than we expected but this was February and, for the last ten days or so, we understand some of the worst winter weather in years! Plenty to see and do in the surrounding cities - Grimaud, Cogolin, St. Tropez, Nice, Grasse, Antibes, etc. We really enjoyed the hikes and trails in the area. May visit again sometime - but during warmer weather. The best thing about the winter visit time was avoiding the crowds.
Thank you, Skip! I enjoyed having you and so glad you made the best of the weather. At least you missed the heavy snow - very unusual - but short-lived. Yes, do come back. Spring in the Var is fabulous!
Charming little cottage in lovely location
Property was ideal for a couple. Great location to base yourself particularly in winter as La Garde Freinet is more or less closed.
Beautiful French Country Home
Beautiful home in quaint small village. Well appointed with shabby chic decor.. English speaking tv... great kitchen... full size washer and dryer... beautiful roof top terrace... owner has anticipated visitor needs .. highly recommend
Thank you Sara!
My aim was/is to anticipate visitor needs :-)
So glad you enjoyed your stay.
Come back soon!
We had a wonderful time in La Garde Freinet. The village house was beautiful and a very short walk from the village centre. There were shops and restaurants still open even though it was the second week of October. Everyone we encountered in the village was friendly and welcoming. The weather was sunny and warm so we began each day reading and drinking coffee on the roof terrace (lovely views). Then we would do a walk to the fort, the cross or drive to a quiet beach to snorkell. We visited St Tropez and the Monastry of La Verne as well as other villages. The whole holiday was enhanced by being able to take our dogs along (think we managed to wear them out...). All in all the little house and village more than lived up to expectations and we would love to return at some time.
New Town - Fabulous!
First time in LGF- we usually go to Ste Maxime, which we also did this time, but also wanted to see something new. Fell in love with the house online and decided to take a chance. Turned out to be a wonderful decision. The owner was a pleasure to deal with, the house looked even better in person and came with many amenities, such as spices, teabags, salt, sugar, a Nespresso machine, a great library of English books and a fabulous SkyTV box so we got all our Favorite Brit detective shows. The bed and linens were so comfortable and the rooftop terrace was great for an exciting game of cribbage. The surroundings were also interesting. A very small town but close to bigger towns. Loved the horse and donkey at the end of our lane. Great restaurants and bars. A fabulous shop, Le Comptoir with beautiful sweaters and scarves and jewellery. I even got my hair cut there. She did an amazing job. We hiked up to the Cross on the hill above the town for some fun rock climbing. Getting keys and leaving keys was very easy and done via a lock box. We met Becca and Philippa who are the property managers and they were lovely and helpful. We would definitely love to rent this house again and I would certainly recommend it . Loved it!
Bonjour! Wineries and wonderful hikes and walks are just minutes from La Garde Freinet! St Tropez and Pampelonne Beach are 21 km or about 20 min drive. There are wonderful markets and wineries all along the coast. Enjoy!
