Philadelphia is a bustling city overflowing with activity, history, and culture. The 'City of Brotherly Love' is a city where many come to learn about the history of America's roots by touring Independence Hall, viewing the Liberty Bell, and visiting the house where Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence. What many visitors forget is that Philadelphia's history was written not just in a house that stood at Seventh and Market streets, but also in the neighborhoods where Philadelphians still live today.

While much of Philadelphia has been modernized and updated, some structures remain the same as they were in the 18th century when John Adams and Thomas Jefferson strolled through the streets of Philadelphia during the American Revolution. One of the things that makes Philadelphia unique is its architecture and real estate. Just one example of unique real estate is the Trinity houses of Philadelphia. Below is some more information on this uniquely Philadelphia structure and how it has survived the test of time.

What is a Trinity house?

A Trinity house is a three-story house with each floor containing one room. The Trinity house is believed to have originated in Philadelphia as early as the year 1720, and nearly 300 years later, Trinity houses are still found across the city of Philadelphia. Sometimes called 'Father, Son, and Holy Ghost' houses or 'Bandbox' houses, Trinity houses are typically quite small with an estimated 400-700 square feet of living space (our home has 800 sqft).

The Chestnut Lofts ...HomeAway # 179041 (faces rear of building)

The Chestnut Lofts is located is located in Old City which although is steps away from the liberty bell and independence hall also has a very lively night time scene with cafes and restaurants and bars. The pros of this unit is that it is located on the top floor of a 5 story building and oriented facing south toward a parking garage not facing chestnut street so it's much much quieter. Drawbacks being there isn't a waterfront view as you have in the front unit, it doesn't have those huge 20 foot ceilings and the main bedroom is a platform style (the second bedroom is fully enclosed). Please see link here for full listing. https://www.vrbo.com/141917

The Chestnut Lofts ...VRBO # 477685 (faces front of building)

This unit does have a water view, has soaring 20 foot ceilings and gets great sunlight. The drawbacks being it's located on Chestnut St so noise can be an issue especially on a weekend night. Please see link for full listing. https://www.vrbo.com/477685

(Panama St )Cozy Home in Historic Washington Square ...HomeAway # 3165419

This home is located directly next to our other home listing #583380 (Townhouse in Washington Sq) on a quiet cobblestone walking street. Both homes are nearly identical although "Townhouse in Washington Sq" was recently remodeled with a new kitchen and new bathroom. On the upside it has a washer and dryer where the other does not. You can not be more centrally located than this, very easy walk to Rittenhouse Square, Washington Square, 13th and Sansom as well as Old City. The location is hard to beat. Drawback wise these places are small and they have very challenging stairs.

(Panama St) Townhouse in Washington Square ...VRBO # 583380

Please see above summary

Charming on Historic Street ... VRBO # 619713

My personal favorite of all our properties. This home is located 258 S. Quince street, if you google images of "Quince street Philadelphia" you will see it has been the subject of many a painting and photograph. The street with all it's cute little walking streets and off shoots is very European/ Old World. It's very tough to drive a car down, more of a cobblestone walking street, making it very quiet, almost an oasis in the middle of the busy city. It's still not too far from the historic sites but certainly not as close as The Chestnut Lofts are. It also has a private back patio with table and 4 chairs. Although it is a trinity, its much larger than the ones we have on Panama st. Drawback wise, Id say it has a lot of stairs and could be an issue for a toddler or someone that has any sort of mobility issue. Please see link for full listing. https://www.vrbo.com/619713

Cozy, comfortable and clean

  • 5 of 5

Fabulous location within easy walking distance of everything. It was unexpectedly hot during our stay and when contacted about the a/c the owner responded immediately. It would be terribly difficult to find fault with this house.

Owner's Response: Hi Ann, It was a pleasure having you. Im so glad you enjoyed your stay with us. For those of you reading this, we have central air through the entire home as well as window units in each bedroom for additional AC. This guest had an issue operating the thermostat, which we were were able to assist with immediately.

Quaint home on lovely street

  • 5 of 5

This home was perfect for us. We were in Philadelphia for my niece's graduation from Penn. We actually walked almost everywhere from this location. The house itself was very comfortable. The beds and bedding were great. It is very clean and has everything you need for a short stay. The stairs are steep leading up to the bedrooms so you need to be able to handle stairs. The kitchen is fully equipped. The tv and wifi worked well. The neighborhood has very good restaurants. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this house.

Delightful & convenient

  • 5 of 5

My first trip to Philadelphia was complimented with our stay in this charming & centrally located home. It was quiet, clean and comfortable. As it was 3 stories with steep stairways, it won't be appropriate for some, but we loved it & highly recommend to others. The owners were responsive to questions & made every effort to assure our stay was perfect.

Great location!

  • 4 of 5

As advertised it was a small house with a steep spiral staircase - tricky with luggage & beverages. I would not recommend this home to those with arthritis or the elderly. Kitchen was well stocked with Whole Foods about a 15 minute walk. Plenty of hot water despite the old plumbing. The beds are vety comfortable but invest in some pillows.

The noise is an issue despite the white noise. I think some new windows may be in order. The AC didn't work very well (we never complained about it) so we slept with windows open (not much louder than with them closed).

The location is great - most tourist attractions are within 20 minutes walking. Philadelphia is a great town - history, good food & very friendly for walkers. Josh was great with communication.

We will be back.

Owner's Response: Thank you for this feedback, I can look into some better windows, I never thought it to be very noisy so Im a bit surprised, but I guess living in a city you kind of become accustomed to the city noise. As for the AC I wish I had known, what I would have recommend is we have a magnetic cover in one on the drawers downstairs that goes over the vent on the 1st floor and forces more AC up into the upper floors. It really makes a difference. Regardless I appreciate the feedback. Thank you for staying with us, my apologies. Josh I just wanted to update my response to this my wife and I discussed and we are going to put in a window AC unit in the 2nd floor bedroom tomorrow. So if the central air isn't giving folks what they need the window unit should more than make up for it. There is already a window unit on the 3rd floor.

Easter Weekend Getaway 4/14-4/16

  • 5 of 5

My family of three and my dog had the pleasure of staying at this property over Easter weekend. The home is located on a beautiful, tree lined street within walking distance

to excellent restaurants, the Liberty Bell/ Independence Hall, great coffee shops and many other museums. We had a delicious prix fixe meal at Vetri , had good Mexican at Tequila's and had one of the best pizza's at Vetri's pizza. It was nice being on a narrow, cobblestone street. We only saw 3 cars drive down the street over the entire weekend. It was a great place to walk my dog. We ran into so many friendly neighbors.

The house has a very comfortable queen bed on the second floor. The kitchen is compact but it has all of the standard kitchen amenities which suited us just fine. This is a perfect rental for a small family with older aged kids. The location is excellent.
