........The most common refrain that we have heard is : "I want to live this way".
The soul of the house subtlety reveals itself on days that friends and family appear at the front door to receive what can only be described as a "hug" by the house before joining the festivities under way.
When you leave, no single element of the house will stand out in your memory; instead your experience will have been that of the finest symphony on it's finest night with no single instrument or piece standing out but all contributing to a magical experience that can only be described as the elusive pursuit of perfection.
We see ourselves as artists, with the creation of living spaces as the form of our art. When we finished building our home Architects and many others wanted to photograph it for magazines but we were not ready to share it with the world.
We wanted the land to create the building and the building to reflect, in its purest, simplest, and most understatedly elegant form, how we strive to live.
To stand the test of time the foundation and structure of the home needed to be exceptional.
Our home rests upon a foundation where the walls are 16 feet deep with 7 tons of rebar sitting upon 5' footings that were pinned to NH's granite. The entire hill can slide and the house will remain standing.
The structure is made of steel and when it was put up it looked, for a brief moment in time, like a sculpture of a house.
Look around and you will see individual components any one of which would stand out in a typical mountain house but here because each was paired with an equally extraordinary complimentary element none stand out but rather each contributes to an elevated experience.
Be it the kitchen, fireplace, dining table or any of a dozen other nooks and spaces the warm embrace of the space is but one of the ways that you will experience our home.
Our home is to other, traditionally stick built or post and beam homes as a Bentley is to a Volvo.
The history of the reclaimed material in the house is varied: some is historically significant; others rare; and some just plain interesting.
The time, the thought, the effort, the resources and the passion required to create a home that can be lived in for generations to come; that will stand the test of time; and that will provide extraordinary family experiences can be undertaken but once in the lifetime of an artist capable of translating feelings into spaces that both rise to the level of art and can be lived in.
We built our home to be large enough for family gathering while still feeling warm and cozy. As you walk around you will notice that our home was designed to bring the outdoors in with almost floor to ceiling window walls and light brought into the core of the house. You will also notice that we used steel instead of wood to reduce the mass of the structural members all while making the home feel warm and cozy.
You are in a space that while appearing to be simple is rather complicated. As you look around you will see reclaimed lumber, bricks and beams (from trees that started growing in the 1600's) alongside cutting edge building materials including sub-flooring that theoretically changes sound energy into heat energy.
We will always be thankful for the wonderful family memories that we created in our home and look forward to their warm glow accompanying us as we move on to the next stage of our life.
