About the property

2 Bedrooms, 1 Bathroom

Another amazing CASA de COSTA RICA property! Also contact us for our free LA FORTUNA VACATION PLANNER!

This 'best of the best' rental is located on the second floor. NOTE: This can make pricing a bit complicated, please contact us for a quote.

The Riverbank is situated on what is absolutely one of the best locations in all of La Fortuna. It is less than 50 feet from the River and the beautiful back yard garden is full of gorgeous flowers, perfume trees, iguanas, hummingbirds and the occasional sloth in the trees as well as countless songbirds and even the legendary toucans... all accompanied by the peaceful sound of the little river laughing over it's bed of small rocks. And yet it is only 100 feet from the liquor store, 200 from grocery stores and the park in the center of town!

Here are other key points which make The Riverbank unique:

• Designed and equipped using our years of experience providing rentals to tens of thousands of intelligent and selective vacationers, people just like you!

• Large and spacious, cathedral ceilings, large bedrooms with new, posteurpedic, pillow-top mattresses.

• Queen-sized bed and Full-sized bed with unique custom designed single bunk

• Huge windows, amazing volcano views. (All the pictures in the listing were taken personally by me with nothing more than a cheap hand held camera.)

• Powerful air conditioners with remote controls and timers, fans too.

• High speed, secure, wireless internet access plus Cable TV including English channels.

• LITERALLY a one minute walk to all of the amenities that you could want including several supermarkets, the liquor store, two churches, the central square/park, countless souvenir shops and an impressively wide array of restaurants, bars and nightclubs.

• Lovely balcony, see pictures for examples of the views. Guests have spent hours there every day, staring at the impressive bulk of the volcano and watching the birds and the people go by.

• Custom cabinetry and Italian tile.

• Fully equipped kitchens for those who want to cook.

• Ready access to the Friday Farmer's Market and other fruit/vegetable stands for fresh farm produce.

• Tranquil setting with lovely yard and garden full of tropical flowers, hummingbirds, toucans, iguanas, flowering vines and trees.

• Ideally located for pickups by tour/activity companies. We can book all of your tours at a discount including; horseback riding, zip lining, canyoning, hot springs, ATV’s, caving, butterfly gardens, hanging bridges, kayaking/cruising/fishing on Lake Arenal, the area’s innumerable hikes and even early morning hot air ballooning over Arenal.

Our first priority in designing The Riverbank was to make you comfortable and give you great value at a great price; you get a LOT more here than you would at a hotel room and for a lower price. Your comfort and the value of your experience come first!

Our second priority was to do all of this in accordance with sustainable tourism principles that give back to the community. For instance:

• Giving back to the local community. 10% of every rental fee collected is donated to the Hogarcito, the local child rescue centre. Opportunities to visit the Hogarcito and play with the kids are easily arranged and very enjoyable. We can also provide you with assistance should you wish to make your own donations.

• Dedicated to reducing impact on environment via recycling, reusing products, and reducing consumption in ways such as purchasing more expensive air conditioners which run on less electricity and have timers so that one doesn't need to run them all day in order to return to a cool place etc.

• Supporting local economy by hiring local artists, carpenters, furniture makers and other artisans.

• Building to last using local materials; there are no cheap, throwaway goods or furniture at The Riverbank! Instead you will find furniture designed by us and built from local woods by local artisenal craftsmen.

• Unique, original paintings crafted by local artists commissioned by us for your enjoyment.

• Participating in efforts to preserve local culture by supporting and promoting the local Indian culture. Contact us for details.

• Investing ourselves into the project. For instance our two-month project of building hand-made furniture using rare, reclaimed Black Laurel.

Staying at The Riverbank is the smart decision for comfortable, convenient and conscientious travel! Come have the best vacation of your life at a great price in complete comfort, knowing that just by being here you are supporting excellent, worthwhile efforts in sustainable tourism too! Welcome to your home away from home.

About William and Laura

I, William, grew up in the Congo as a missionary kid. While I enjoyed my former careers as a Fortune 500 business consultant, inventor and part time musician and always wanted to move back to the tropics. While here for vacation 4 years ago, I used my 20 years of business development expertise to help a friend who had lost her job save her vacation home here by marketing it as a rental property. She was ecstatic, then my phone started to ring with others who also had one-of-a-kind properties and wanted my help too! I suddenly had a vacation company. I now have the honour of working with some of the nicest people and some of the most unique properties in the country. Life was perfect when my beautiful Laura purchased a one way ticket and joined me after years apart. Our company has grown so much in the last year that we have added our long time friend Nohelia to our team. I love meeting my many guests, plus living and working here in paradise beats corporate office life hands down! Ask for our free, new, comprehensive vacation planning guide! We can help with everything, hope to see you soon!

"Our family of eight recently spent a few days enjoying William and Laura's hospitality. I would echo what all the other guests have said - the condos are well-appointed and super-clean. William and Laura are such responsive and engaging hosts. One very important thing that I hadn't fully realized before getting there was the location - the condos are right in 'downtown' Fortuna - you could walk a couple blocks to restaurants, grocery stores, tour company pickups etc. If we had stayed in one of the hotels/resorts, it would have been a $9 cab ride everytime you wanted to get a bite. While it is in downtown, we still had a great view of the volcano from our balconies and plenty of birds/iguanas visiting the gardens. I can't say enough good things about William and Laura's hospitality - which honestly makes all the difference."

Cute, well stocked apartment on a noisy street

  • 3 of 5

Really nicely stocked apartment walking distance to town. William, the owner, could not have been nicer. Very helpful suggesting things to do, places to eat, etc. However, since it is on a busy street, there is a lot of noise. Motorcycles, and big trucks go by all day and most of the night. Even with earplugs and the A/C (which struggled to keep it cool) , I could not drown out the road noise. We left for other accommodations after two sleepless nights. William was gracious and tried to help us find other accommodations. If you are a light sleeper, this is not the best place for you. If not, it will be great.

Owner's Response: There are very few things in the world more frustrating than people who don't do their research and then complain and place blame on others when things don't go their way. This poster is particularly frustrating given the fact that she was here with her boyfriend who had stayed here last year with his father and son. So this wasn't even a "blind" rental. The poster told us that she lives in Alaska on a farm with neighbors who are miles away, so there is absolutely NO noise at night. In which case she shouldn't have booked a condo in town, (regardless of where it was located,) and her partner should have told her as much. As for the air conditioning, they ran them so cold that condensation was dripping down the windows on the outside. But no, the machines couldn't make the inside of the condo as cold as her farm in Alaska; which begs the question of why she wanted to vacation in a location where the March temperatures are 80 degrees higher than they are at her farm. In short, while we very rarely respond critically toward any post by a guest, the criticism in this one is simply not warranted. She is correct in that I did spend nearly two hours listening to her when she checked in and shared an entire bottle of aged rum with them. Also that I drove them to look at other places to stay. We certainly always do our best to be helpful in whatever way we can. That said, we strongly disagree with her comments about the condo being too noisy and we suggest that the reader look at the more than 100 other reviews on The Riverbank to obtain a more accurate understanding of the property. We look forward to hosting you soon, Pura Vida! :-)

Fantastic apartment with access to all the activities and a sloth in the backyard!

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at the Riverbank was fantastic. The apartment was clean, spacious and in a great location. The best part of our booking was interacting with Nohelia, who can help you select and book different tours and activities in the La Fortuna area. The service she provided was fantastic. The owner, William, lives in the apartment next door and gave us a hearty welcome when we arrived. The backyard is beautiful and there is currently a sloth living in the backyard tree - which really made our trip! If you are looking for a place to stay in La Fortuna, do not hesitate to book. Or if you are considering where to go in Costa Rica in general, look no further. We only stayed half a week, but wish we stayed longer. We hope to visit again. PS We did drink the tap water here with no issues. We enjoyed: The morning sloth and toucan tour with Callidryas Tours, the Rainforest Chocolate tour, ziplining at Parque Arenal Mundo Aventura, hiking at Mirador del Silencio. So much to do here!

Clean, comfortable and close to everything in the center of Fortuna!

  • 5 of 5

Clean and well-appointed apartment located within two blocks of Fortuna's town square with many options for restaurants and groceries within walking distance. This was our first stop of three on our first Costa Rican vacation and allowed us to get a feel for the daily lives of the local residents who passed by below our balcony. Off-street/on-site parking was a great amenity in the center of this busy tourist-oriented town. Apartment is above businesses and across the street from a fire station, but we were never bothered by either. Neighboring condo property has an outdoor BBQ/billiards area, so although it's good advice for travel anywhere, be prepared to mitigate external noise if it bothers you. Laura was a great hostess and the property management company was easy to deal with.

A great introduction to Costa Rica

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 4 spent 2 nights at the condo prior to heading on to Arenal. William and Laura were wonderful hosts. They spent a bit of time in our condo after check-in so that we could get to know each other and they could give us an overview of the town and surrounding areas. The booking process was very easy. Their staff member, Nohelia, was extremely helpful in the weeks leading up to our visit. We didn't expect this service but Nohelia assisted us in scheduling shuttle transportation and a couple of excursions. Researching various companies, she was able to get the shuttle and 2 excursions for the same or lower prices than what was advertised directly through the vendors. We had a bit of a hiccup with one of the excursions but a call to Nohelia resulted in the situation being handled quickly and we were able to enjoy the day. The condo was clean and well stocked. It was only a couple of blocks from the local grocery stores and town center, so we walked everywhere. We would stay again.

Highly recommended!

My wife and I had a fantastic stay at The Riverbank! William and crew were very gracious, friendly, and knowledgeable hosts. The apartment was spacious and had all the necessities. Plus, the location couldn’t be better. A view of Arenal off our back porch and literally a 2-minute walk into the center of town. Iguanas in the trees in the mornings. We couldn’t have asked for more!

Car: not necessary

Transportation is easy. If you are on a short vacation, then look into flying to La Fortuna instead of driving; flight schedules are published by Sanza and Nature Air and a 20 minute flight is always better and easier than a drive after your international flight. If your international flight arrives too late for you to connect to a local one, then private vans with drivers are also available for almost the same price as a car rental by itself, so contact us for a quote. They make the start and finish of your trip much more relaxing and much SAFER with door to door service. Plus, cars are less expensive to rent here than they are in Liberia or San Jose.

If you do decide to drive here from San Jose or Liberia, then remember to review the traffic laws and signs before renting and to download updated Costa Rica maps for your GPS as there are few street signs here. In particular you need to know when to yield on one lane bridges.

Finally there are private shuttles such as Interbus and Grayline which offer air conditioned transfers in clean, modern vans for about $50/person or you can take the public bus for about $6. This is not reccommended as you will use up most of a day traveling and there is an increased risk of petty theft on the buses.
