About Ellen Jonker
I am a 4th generation Stony Lake resorter beginning with my great grandfather who rented one of the early cottages on the lake. The rest is history. As a child I enjoyed every summer, Memorial to Labor Day, at Stony Lake and knew this was where I wanted my family to grow up also. I was extremely fortunate to acquire this property in 1994.
Ellen Jonker purchased this Cottage in 1994
Why Ellen Jonker chose Shelby
This property is uniquely located within walking distance to Lake Michigan and is one of just a few cottages on a quiet gravel dead end road with limited traffic. It is just two cottages away from the cottage where I grew up and fortunately, I was able to purchase this property. Now my children and grandchildren come to Stony to enjoy good old fashioned fun and family environment. The 'Peanut' cottage is the guest house for the main property which was recently rebuilt in 2014.
What makes this Cottage unique
Listen to the waves lapping the water's edge while you enjoy beautiful views from the screened porch. This cottage is perfect for a couple seeking respite from a busy urban life or a young family to enjoy playing with their children in the beach sands of Stony or Lake Michigan. This is a historic cottage built at the turn of the century and has been updated periodically to preserve its integrity. It has wood floors throughout and has a quaint cottage feel the moment you walk thru the front door.
A Little Jewel on a Beautiful Lake
Peanut Guest House is a small cottage with a big view. However, because of the open space living area and (well stocked) galley kitchen, the cottage does not "feel" small, even though two small sofas and a few chairs provide more than ample seating. The space is filled with natural light, which adds to the open feeling. In addition, even though it rained during my stay, the cottage did not feel gloomy. Over all, the furniture is in very good to excellent condition. The mattress is very comfortable and there is a thoughtful offering of firm and soft pillows. The shower provides a strong stream of hot water. All in all, the cottage is not clean, it is immaculate, quite a feat for a cottage on a sandy beach. The screened-in front porch has chairs and a table and a wonderful view of Stony Lake. The owner offers the use of kayaks and while Stony Lake offers great paddling, there is also a channel to Lake Michigan! It's also an easy 10-minute walk to the big lake and we spent a great deal of time walking the shoreline. My friend fished for salmon in a nearby pool and fished on Stony Lake. We ate in the Stony Lake Bar Café and the food was excellent. (try the perch!!) and enjoyed the evening ritual of walking to the small neighborhood store for ice cream (try the mocha!!). To sum up, Peanut Cottage feels authentic and genuine, but well done, and, as a result, my stay at Stony Lake felt the same. I really do hope to return.
I’m so glad you were able to experience one of the best kept secrets in West Michigan, Stony Lake! Please come back and visit soon, it was a pleasure to have you!
Our stay at the Peanut Cottage was outstanding! My husband and I enjoyed fishing and kayaking on crystal clear Stony Lake, and. taking walks on the Lake Michigan shoreline to see spectacular sunsets. Sitting on the porch late at night you can view a million stars lighting up the night sky! The cottage is clean and very homey. Ellen, the host is very personable and accommodating ensuring a wonderful stay! We are looking forward to this relaxing retreat again next year!

We loved the location of the Peanut Cottage on the lake being within walking distance to the park, store and Lake Michigan. It was the perfect size for me and my daughter and was extremely comfortable and homey. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will definitely go back! Thank you again so much Ellen!
Recently my wife and I stayed at Stony Lake at 'Peanut' and it was a wonderfully calm and restful stay. Ellen, our host and proprietor, of 'Peanut', the name of the residential cabin we stayed, was a most comfortable visit we've experienced in a long time. Ellen is a wonderfully accommodating hostess and for anyone wanting to have an embracing reprieve I strongly recommend this stay.
