Conveniently located over the local Puako General Store, this one-bedroom, one-bath flat is perfect for a couple wanting the beach life on a budget. The flat has an oceanview from the covered lanai, the living room and the bedroom. The living area features a comfortable seating area (which can double as a second sleeping area) with TV and DVD Player (movies can be rented downstairs at the Puako Store). The full kitchen, has a four-burner electric stove, full-size fridge, microwave and all that you need to prepare your own meals using our Big Island fish and produce from nearby (20 minutes) farmer's markets. The oceanview bedroom features a new, comfy queen-size bed, ceiling fan, air conditioning, dresser, and large closet. Sunsets can be enjoyed from the lanai while BBQing on the electric George Foreman grill, or walk to Puako Bay (2 minutes) to enjoy sunset with your feet in the sand. The flat has beach chairs, beach towels and a cooler for beach days. For those who must work, or wish to communicate with family and friends; password protected, high-speed internet is available. Cleanness of the place I stay is always my priority, I was fully satisfied on this point with clean towels and dishes. The location is wonderful for beach lovers. There are variety of beaches in walking distance for watching turtles and whales, swimming, snorkeling and picking shells. The owner and her staff are very kind and helpful.

Clean and comfortable close to the beach

My husband and I enjoyed our stay at the 1-bedroom flat above the Puako General Store. The apartment decor was artful and the furnishings comfortable and of good quality. The kitchen was well furnished for a small space. We enjoyed sitting on the deck in the morning and evening, listening to the surf and enjoying the breeze. In the morning, we often saw whales off shore. We appreciated the beach chairs, mats, cooler and boogie boards that were provided. All in all- lovely.

Nice roomy apartment conveniently located above a general store

My wife and I stayed there for a week, and it was exactly what we needed. The apartment was roomier than we thought; there's a bedroom, living room with kitchenette, and bathroom. The place was super clean and nicely furnished. There were even nice Hawaiian drinks waiting for us in the fridge when we got there! The staff was super friendly and made us feel welcome.

The store below is nicely stocked with snacks and groceries, so you can cook meals if you want.

Note that Puako is pretty quiet and residential, so you'll want a car if you plan on going anywhere.

Great Big Island Find!

We stayed at 2 Papayas 1 bedroom condo in Puako above the Puako General Store and loved it!

Clean, well appointed, and a view of the ocean to boot.

Not to mention easy shopping for groceries right down stairs!

Puako is a quiet residential area that is perfect for those who want to avoid the big destination resorts along the Kohala coast of the Big Island.

Arrived late at night, woke up the next morning, went out to the balcony and was immediately treated to a family of whales flopping and spouting out in the ocean. A great location and Mary & crew are a delight.

Dating back to ancient times, Puako was a fishing village that, until the 1950s, was accessible only by boat or by the Ala Kaha Kai (the ancient “shoreline trail” that is now partially restored as a National Historic Trail). One of Hawaii’s largest petroglyph fields is nearby.

Still a small beach community—fewer than 200 homes along a single road just 2 ½ miles long—Puako is blessed with a consistently sunny and gentle climate. An eclectic mix of residents, snowbirds and vacationers, the kids you see on bikes and the surfers at Paniau probably live here. As you cross paths with them, stop and “talk story” at the General Store, an informal community center as well as a convenient resource for supplies. Life in Puako—year-round and short-term—is relaxed, very relaxed, but never boring.

Rimmed by a protected marine preserve, the Puako reef offers endless sights for snorkeling, SCUBA diving, kayaking, swimming and tide pool wading. Join the “honu” (protected sea turtles—please enjoy them at a safe distance) for a swim or follow their lead and bask in the sun nearby. You’ll have a great vantage point for watching the wintertime display of whales and their young during their calving time in our warm waters.

If all this isn’t exciting enough, you can walk to the Mauna Lani or Fairmont Orchid Hotels for a sunset beverage, or visit the nearby Shops at Mauna Lani or the King’s Shops and Queen’s Marketplace just down the highway for shopping and a variety of restaurants and galleries. On the way upcountry to Waimea, home of Parker Ranch and the “paniolos” (cowboys), a stop at Kawaihae Harbor offers additional restaurants, galleries, and a fish market. Golfers have numerous options, and adventurers may head for the summit of Mauna Kea, the active volcano Kilauea or a trip to the Zipline in Kapa’au.
