Charming stay, great hospitality!
My boyfriend and I came for a short 5 days stay after Thanksgiving. This unit is so conveniently located, away from the touristy Kona areas, but still very accessible to beaches, views and everything you wanted to do on the big island.
I was really impressed with Mary's hospitality, she owns and manages the store downstairs, it is super convenient. The unit is ultra clean, comfortable and well stocked with everything you could think of! We cooked two meals with fresh fish caught right at the boats, it was wonderful.
Access to the beach is steps away, a private one almost feels like, and within 1.2m walk, you get to experience two of the best beaches on the island. It really can't be beat! I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again. Thanks Mary!
We really loved the central location of this place, we loved being right across from the beach too! Great neighborhood. You can take guided snorkeling excursions right off the Puako Boat Launch. I also appreciated being away from the hustle and bustle of Kona. This area is super laid back. Be sure to eat a few meals at Kohola Burger & Taco... amazing burgers, fish tacos, orange dreams and dole pineapple whip!
Wonderful unit with perfect view and location.
We were so happy to stay in this comfortable place. The village itself is very interesting with a good beach which felt like a private one. As usually nobody was there just me and my husband.
Quiet and pleasant place to stay and relax . But most of all we liked the homely atmosphere in there and friendly personnel. Our special thanks to Mary Fox. We definitely will come back.

My stay at Puako at apartment located above General Store in Puako
It is a very nice vacation rental for one or two people. It was very clean and homey. Good vibrations from folks around, and one can hear the ocean waves at night. I especially liked the water filter pitcher provided in the fridge.
This location is perfect. Everything is here: excellent snorkeling across the street in the reefs of Puako, a grocery store which meets all needs right beneath you, a support staff who responds to every need with pleasure! And, you're beyond the hotel crowds and crowds of Kona, with the sea to mauka and Mauna Kea volcano to the makai. dining on the balcony for breakfast is the perfect way to begin a day in Puako. This place can't be beat!
Dating back to ancient times, Puako was a fishing village that, until the 1950s, was accessible only by boat or by the Ala Kaha Kai (the ancient “shoreline trail” that is now partially restored as a National Historic Trail). One of Hawaii’s largest petroglyph fields is nearby. Still a small beach community—fewer than 200 homes along a single road just 2 ½ miles long—Puako is blessed with a consistently sunny and gentle climate. An eclectic mix of residents, snowbirds and vacationers, the kids you see on bikes and the surfers at Paniau probably live here. As you cross paths with them, stop and “talk story” at the General Store, an informal community center as well as a convenient resource for supplies. Life in Puako—year-round and short-term—is relaxed, very relaxed, but never boring. Rimmed by a protected marine preserve, the Puako reef offers endless sights for snorkeling, SCUBA diving, kayaking, swimming and tide pool wading. Join the “honu” (protected sea turtles—please enjoy them at a safe distance) for a swim or follow their lead and bask in the sun nearby. You’ll have a great vantage point for watching the wintertime display of whales and their young during their calving time in our warm waters. If all this isn’t exciting enough, you can walk to the Mauna Lani or Fairmont Orchid Hotels for a sunset beverage, or visit the nearby Shops at Mauna Lani or the King’s Shops and Queen’s Marketplace just down the highway for shopping and a variety of restaurants and galleries. On the way upcountry to Waimea, home of Parker Ranch and the “paniolos” (cowboys), a stop at Kawaihae Harbor offers additional restaurants, galleries, and a fish market. Golfers have numerous options, and adventurers may head for the summit of Mauna Kea, the active volcano Kilauea or a trip to the Zipline in Kapa’au.
