Experience all that Costa Rica has to offer at this property

  • 5 of 5

This property is beautiful! You have the jungle in your backyard with so much jungle life all around you. And the path to the beach is a short and very wonderful walk. The beach is beautiful and goes for miles in both directions with so much privacy. We were traveling with 8 people (4 adults/4 kiddos aged 12, 13, 15, 16) and had plenty of space inside of out. Definitely bring flash lights and binoculars to explore this wonderous property.

What we liked about the property - everything!

-the privacy, the beauty, the jungle and the the beach

-within walking distance to restaurants and grocery

-within biking distance to shops and other beaches (many beaches to explore)

-the outdoor living space is amazing - like no other we have seen before - it is huge and very clean and very well covered. We were there during a tropical storm and nothing leaked. It was amazing to be able to be outside to hear and see the rain and experience the jungle. Can't imagine staying anywhere else - rain or shine this is where you want to be

-air condition in the bedrooms

-inside living space was very roomy as well as the bedrooms - very large

-sliding doors that open to outdoor living space

-2 foot showers and an outside shower

Please know the kitchen and dining area are all outside - the fridge, stove, cabinets, trash, tables, chairs, everything.

**If you like to cook (which we did for almost every meal) the outdoor kitchen can be challenging if you are used to a lot of amenities. You can not store any dry food outside unless it is sealed tight, as jungle creatures will find there way to the patio while you are sleeping. You have to be sure and clean/wash everything as soon as you are done cooking as the bugs/ants are quick to act on food that is out. The kitchen amenities are very basic due to this. Would recommend to bring a very sharp kitchen knife and there is no cutting board. Would also recommend bringing Ziploc bags as there is not much to store leftover food in. No complaint at all -we loved it - just informing since it is not really noted anywhere.

The caretakers on the property will accommodate any needs you have - you just have to let them know. Communication is key.

Amelie is wonderful, responsive and very informative. If you have any questions just ask her as she is very open and honest and gives wonderful recommendations to whatever you are interested in.

With a little TLC this place could be top notch

  • 4 of 5

All in all our party enjoyed the 6 days we spent in this villa. The property is absolutely incredible and the villa was well designed in many ways.

There were 12 of us and I wanted to mention a few things that could be improved on so that the owners can make the stay better for others.

1) Jacuzzi was pretty dirty with frogspawn in it, if there was more regular maintenance perhaps this would be better.

2) The rubbish / garbage situation - There should be a better solution than leaving out the left over foods in the bin. One night dogs came into the open air living area which is connected to the kitchen, obviously attracted by the smell. We had left shoes and toys and the dogs went havoc dragging everything outside the house. We had put the rubbish up high so they couldnt get this - thank goodness.

3) Kitchen is a little scarce with a few issues:

The fridge is small for the amount of people that this villa can host.

The taps on the sink are loose and not very easy to work

There is no oven and the grill that was left for us wasn`t very big so not more than 4 pieces of chicken could be cooked at any one time.

4) Some holes in the floor (large ones) in the back bedroom which we covered up but mossies and creatures have an easy access in.

Despite these points though the overall experience was positive. The area is great with so much to do and see. Thanks!!

Unique property and good house for our group

  • 4 of 5

Our group of 8 (two families with teenagers) stayed at this property for 6 days. Although it rained every single day, we enjoyed our stay at Playa Chiquita. We liked that the location was close to the grocery store and a few good restaurants - Pura Gula and Jungle Love (and Alice's ice cream!), however, the property is right off the main beach road so my friend who stayed in one of the rooms at the front would hear cars driving all day long and early in the morning. We wish the property was slightly set back from the road and closer to the beach for that reason. The beach was very private and while we were there and we saw a handful of people at most. The A/C worked great in all the rooms but we were having difficulty getting hot showers from a couple of the bathrooms. We did hear monkeys early in the mornings but only spotted them a couple of times high in the trees. We saw frogs and lizards, but not much other wildlife. It is definitely a unique setup with the kitchen and dining room outside and not enclosed, so it is a cool concept but not liked by those in our group who would get bitten while standing or sitting in that area. The kitchen was bare bones with cleaning supplies and no spices; and we had to ask for a sponge and dishwashing detergent. The cleaning lady came every other day, but on Sunday, she does not work so our place was cleaned only once. Also, when we checked in around 5, she was still cleaning up from the previous group and did not finish until almost 6. There is a room safe and the bedroom doors were given keys so we felt safe, especially with a caretaker located on the premises; however, one night we did see a few people walk right behind the kitchen in the backyard with flashlights, which seemed unusual (given the setup of the property from the roads and from the beach and access).

Wonderful Private Beach House Close to Everything

  • 5 of 5

This is a great property. Out the back, you have outdoor living, dining and kitchen that opens into your own private manicured jungle path to a private beach. Out front, you have town with various restaurants, grocery and activities nearby. We had monkeys and other wildlife all around. We had 5 kids under 7 years old and had a great time. Would be great for people of all ages.

Positive notes: A/C works well in bedrooms, hot showers, feels very remote but is plenty close. Beach chairs and outdoor showers are a plus. Also, there is a caretaker on site that gave us fresh towels, sheets, took care of trash, etc. as needed. We felt very safe and I don't think we ever locked our door or used the in room safes that were provided for our things. Also, we drove from San Jose. If you're nervous about that, get a transfer and rent a car closer to the house. We didn't have any problems driving ourselves too and from the airport and liked have a car. Bring binoculars; the trees are huge and the wildlife are up in them. The ocean 100 yards from the house though there was a gravel path and the jungle is maintained all the way to the beach.

Things to know: we were there in the rainy season so the ocean was rough. Bring life jackets for any kids wanting to play in the ocean during this time. The majority of the living spaces are outdoor. We loved this and there weren't bug there while we were there; however, had it been warmer and buggy, we would have had to wear bug spray. You are close to the road. We liked the easy access to town, but you will hear/see the occasional car from the house. Also, ask the caretaker for anything you need. We were reluctant to ask and there was a language barrier. His children speak English and were happy to translate and he and his wife were eager to help however they could.

One thing that could have been better was having more information upon reservation. We had never been to Costa Rica and may be too up tight, but some driving directions, notes about the home ahead of time from the property manager would have been much appreciated. We pretty much showed up in Costa Rica with the information from VRBO, a name and a cell phone number. We've rented all over and we were provided less info than ever before with this home. To be fair, we called the property manager, met her there and had ample info once we arrived. We didn't have any issues, everything was taken care of, but the lack of info made for a little unnecessary stress.

The house is located at the very entrance of Playa Chiquita.

The uncrowded Playa Chiquita is a favorite for those who want to relax on the fine sand and in the beautiful waters surrounded only by nature. It is really several small bays so you may be able to find your own small beach with no one else in sight. As well, there is no road to access to the beach so the short walk down one of several trails to the beach also provides privacy. The house has a private access to the beach.

Restaurants and services can be found along the main road including a gourmet supermarket.

Some of the best restaurants in the area are found in Playa Chiquita, w few minutes walk front he house: Jungle Love, Pura Gula, Playa Chiquita Cafe, La botanica Organica, La Biela…

Yoga classes are available nearby, at Tierra de Sueno or the Tree House.

There are also a wide variety of hotels and vacation homes. For supplies beyond groceries you'll need to head into Puerto Viejo. Transport options between Playa Chiquita and Puerto Viejo include the local bus (running hourly or less during daylight hours), bicycle (most hotels rent bicycles), taxi and private car (recommended).
