We are an RN/LCSW & College Professor/Pastor, who have traveled the world and lived in many other countries. Our love for Japan (home for 13 years) is reflected in the downstairs suite. Our grandparents bought this property in 1950 and we enjoyed many childhood days and high school courtship here. This Craftsman home was completed in 2011 as a family project/retreat, which we make available on a limited basis for other families and friends.
William and Danece Stapleton purchased this house in 1950
Our grandparents bought this property in 1950 and it was occupied by Uncle, a WWII Vet for 30 years after Grandmother King passed. The property sits on a cul-de-sac next to a protected preserve, (thus 'King's End') overlooking the Protected City landmark, the Portola Sycamore - where the Spanish explorer Gaspar de Portola originally met with the Chumash Indians in 1769 and named this place 'La Carpinteria,' (the spelling is Spanish and it means 'the carpenter's shop'), noting that the Indians were building a very sophisticated kind of canoe, which they called a 'tomol,' out of the trunks of the sycamores. Rather than hacking out the center of the logs and floating them like a dugout, they were actually sawing the logs into boards to build what we might call 'real boats.' So, because of its long-standing history that lot became a preserve, and you can see the memorial plaque if you walk down to the tree. Although public property, the preserve adds ambience and an airy quality to our property as well.
Our grandchildren's favorite's: The famous, Robitalle's Candy Shop, Foster's Freeze, Sushi Teri, Reyes' Market, Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf and Starbuck's all a short walk down town. The home reflects history and modern convenience. Comfortable, relaxed, close to town yet secluded.
The house was beautiful and we love Carpinteria. The house's grounds are amazingly well kept and the house was perfect for all our family's needs. We started each morning with coffee on the back porch and ended each night at the beach. I love all the books and the cozy spots for reading. This was not our first time to Carpinteria and each time it seems we find a new "favorite" spot. On this trip we discovered the used book shop run by the Library--hard back books for $1!
We had a wonderful stay at King's End Carpinteria. It's such a lovely and history-filled place with the Portola Sycamore right there and the beach so close. Lots of space for the kids to run and play, with a huge park right next door, and only a 5 minute walk to the shore. It's in a great, quiet neighborhood, with families all around who have lived there many years. Our car got lonesome in the driveway. We walked everywhere we wanted to go; to the beach; to town for shopping; to Senior Frog's for the greatest hamburgers ever; to the driving range for some golfing practice; to Reyes' Market for the very best Mexican food and, yes, to McDonald's once in a while, just because. But when we did get the car out we found Santa Barbara and Ventura equally close, and we enjoyed a trip to Solvang and the Santa Ynez wineries. The house itself is very comfortable and well-appointed with lots of space and a huge patio for outdoor meals. Mornings on the upstairs decks, just outside our bedrooms were glorious coffee times. It's, all-around, a most comfortable home away from home. We'll do it again.
We loved our stay at King's End in Carpinteria. The cost was more than reasonable and we were able to have family come at various times and vacation with us. The beach is so close you can hear it at night and the community is so wonderful. We really enjoyed the Saturday morning street shopping. We also fell in love with Sly's restaurant and the Blood Orange Martinis at Senor Frogs. We spent time in Ojai, Santa Barbara, and Solvang as all were within easy driving distance. I couldn't have asked for a better time or a better value for the time and freedom we were granted.
