About Deborah

Originally from the St. Louis area, I lived in Petersburg from 1998 to 2013. The first time I drove into town looking for a home to buy, the 'Old Petersburg Operahouse' was for sale. Having majored in music many years ago, the old building sent out a siren call for me to buy it! I've been buying and rehabbing in town ever since. In 2011 I opened The Cottage for vacationers. It was a very slow start, and I wondered if it had been the right decision. But soon the Creation Museum guests started arriving--I love my guests! What a joy to interact with these Christian families (many with lots of children :), who are kind and thoughtful...and take care of my home! It was obvious right away that a vacation home offers a much-needed alternative to hotel rooms...most of which cannot accommodate the larger families. Also, the ability to cook your own meals instead of eating out can save money. (And doing a little laundry during vacation can rescue you from a mountain of clothes when you get home...;-) I hope you enjoy the adventure of staying in this historic general store...

My youth group loved it!!!

  • 5 of 5

Very clean, beautifully decorated, spacious, and welcoming. We stayed here while visiting the Creation Museum and the Ark Encounter. When I asked some of the kids what was one of the things they like best about our trip- they said staying in the house (store). Would highly recommend. :)

We loved it and had a great time!

  • 5 of 5

We visited for 2 nights with our church group and had an excellent stay. There were 17 of us and we had plenty space and everything we needed. The kids loved getting out in the evenings and walking to the river or the playground just down the road.

Beautifully decorated

The house was much more than we ever even dreamed. It was a good place for a jumping off point for our other excursions in the area. It was so nice to come in at night and cook a meal and have the space to sit and talk about the day. We would definitely recommend this property to anyone going to visit in the area.

We are so grateful for the opportunity to stay at the General Store. This was our second visit but this time our older kids and grandkids joined us! Everyone fit comfortably and we made special memories together. What a blessing!

Big Family Getaway

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at the General Store was part of celebrating my mother's 70th birthday. There were 16 in our party, and with ages ranging from 14 months to 75 years, including six young children. We were looking for a place that was close to the Ark Encounter yet would have space to for us all to meet, relax and enjoy one another's company. We found that and more at Deborah's General Store. The kitchen and living room areas were so open that there was plenty of space for us all to share a meal, play games or just sit and talk. Petersburg is so quiet and quaint that the children could play right out front with skateboards and squirt guns. The short walk to the community center playground was ideal. We also enjoyed quiet walks down to the riverside. With a group this size having a kitchen that was stocked for cooking and serving big meals plus nice laundry facilities was a tremendous blessing.

The linens, rooms and bathrooms were very clean and comfortable. I never got that uneasy feeling you get in a hotel when little ones crawl around on the floor. It didn't feel like a rented room. It felt like home.

Thanks Deborah, Wanda and whole staff. We will come again!!
