Originally from the St. Louis area, I lived in Petersburg from 1998 to 2013. The first time I drove into town looking for a home to buy, the 'Old Petersburg Operahouse' was for sale. Having majored in music many years ago, the old building sent out a siren call for me to buy it! I've been buying and rehabbing in town ever since. In 2011 I opened The Cottage for vacationers. It was a very slow start, and I wondered if it had been the right decision. But soon the Creation Museum guests started arriving--I love my guests! What a joy to interact with these Christian families (many with lots of children :), who are kind and thoughtful...and take care of my home! It was obvious right away that a vacation home offers a much-needed alternative to hotel rooms...most of which cannot accommodate the larger families. Also, the ability to cook your own meals instead of eating out can save money. (And doing a little laundry during vacation can rescue you from a mountain of clothes when you get home...;-) I hope you enjoy the adventure of staying in this historic general store...

Great experience at the general store
The pictures don't lie the general store was amazing. We had five people in our group going to the Creation Museum and Ark Encounter. We had an amazing time in a small quaint town that's very close to everything. If we come back to visit again we would most definitely get the general store.
Our stay was perfect! Deborah was very helpful and prompt in communication before we arrived. Check in was easy and the house was clean and just as described. Absolutely loved our time and will definitely rent again the next time we return!
A great place to stay!
2 visits... the same!
We have had two visits to the general store with a two-year Gap in between them. Our expectations round two were met as it was exactly the same as the first time, felt like home! We had everything we could possibly need, and lots of room. Great stay, and would definitely consider coming back!
Such a Perfect Stay
Our church group of about four families had the most perfect stay at the General Store. We had both levels and particularly enjoyed that there were two full living rooms and kitchens. The kids hung out upstairs and could enjoy Netflix and games and the adults could talk down stairs. We often cooked breakfast in the upstairs kitchen so as not to wake the person sleeping on the downstairs day bed by the door.
There were so many perfect details, including plenty of hooks for everyone in the large bathrooms and all the towels and dishes we could think of needing. We made use of every bed and both coffee pots. We loved walking around Petersburg and down to the river and to the basketball courts and little playground in the middle of town. We came to visit the Creation Museum and the Ark, which were great, but it’d be a great place for a little ladies retreat or a comfortable stay for a family at a holiday. So thankful for this beautiful place!
This place was awesome!
We had a group of 21 friends and family that stayed at the General Store for 4 nights. There are 2 very well stocked kitchens, plenty of towels and washcloths and enough room for us to spread out to visit, watch movies or play games. The wifi worked great on both floors. There was plenty of parking for our 5 vehicles. I highly recommend staying here!
