About kerolayn cofsky
From Beacon Hill to Sugar Hill, we are two generations continuing our family's legacies in Harlem. We garden: nurturing the peonies brought from China as wedding gifts to our maternal great-great grandparents in 1880. We create: she is an art historian who restores old houses and fine art textiles and he creates everything from concept to product to the 'buzz' for the next new idea in the men's fashion industry. You'll stay in his top floor pied-à-terre since he is now often in Hong Kong, Boston or on the West coast. Yes, we love jazz: he specializes in early jump blues and the evolution of early Black rock n' roll. No, we don't cook but are very successful reservation and suggestion makers, having enjoyed the treasures of this city for the last 4 decades.

New York New York
Close to subway 2 minute walk. Clean apartment and quiet tenants. Love the old brownstone and history
Charming and spacious
We had a wonderful stay at Carolyn’s upper Harlem brownstone for 5 nights. Growing up in NYC I would not have thought of staying on the Harlem/Washington Heights border but times change and the neighborhood is now safe and beautiful. The brownstone is on a quiet block (for NYC) although there is some entertaining jockeying for spaces on alternate street parking mornings. Lots of families live in the neighborhood leading to lots of grocery/pharmacy, etc options for your needs during a longer stay. We got to explore new bagel shops (Bo Bagels) and new restaurants. The apartment itself is charming and comfortable. Lots of character and beautifully furnished. Carolyn is a responsive and charming hostess who lives at the property. Apartment looks like the photos. We recommend the apartment and the neighborhood.
Fantastic Place In NYC For Families
My family of 7 just returned from a week in New York where we stayed at Carolyn's place. It was absolutely perfect. There was plenty of space for all of us. The location is also perfect as it is a very short walk to the subway and it was only a 20 minute ride to Midtown. If we ever make it back to New York I would definitely stay here again.
Perfect in every way!
We spent 5 nights in Carolyn's Sugar Hill apartment on a family trip to New York for our daughter's graduation from Columbia Univ. This apartment has the charm and features that one would expect from a 100+ year old 3rd floor walk up. brownstone. The location is great and is right around the corner from the train station which we utilized every day. The family area is spacious with plenty of room for the 6 adults in our group. There is a beautiful large, square marble table for dining. The kitchen is fully equipped with everything we needed. We were concerned that one bathroom would be an issue but we made it work. The beds are adequate for a short stay. Carolyn is extremely attentive and easily accessible when needed and is always a text message away. She provided suggestions for sites to see in New York and recommendations for how to get around the city. Thank you Carolyn for your hospitality!
Wonderful Place to Stay
This was our first trip to New York and this was the perfect place to stay. Under 5 min walk to the subway station in a safe neighbourhood. Took 10-15 to get to mid Manhattan.
The beds were comfortable and the kitchen had all we needed. Great place to unwind after a busy day in the city.
We're happy you and your family were able to stretch out and relax after long days of exploring the City. We've tried to make it an easy place to just "be".
Sugar Hill Stay
Our time in Manhattan was wonderful! It was a first time for 3 of us and second visit for 2. The location of the Brownstone worked pretty well for us because there’s a subway station a block east from the apt. Leaving the brownstone in the morning was a cinch, returning in the evening was more challenging to find the train that would get us back to the West 155th station but there were other stations nearby within a 5-10 min walking distance. It was about 1/2 hour subway ride to South Central Park and never crowded in the morning.
The apartment was really cool, I wish the walls could talk. I can’t imagine the amount of people in and out of that place. Our host was kind, and very helpful. Had lots of information for us about where we were in regards to the subway station and restaurants.
We were happy to have a bed for each of us. The reason this is a four-star instead of five star review is specifically related to the beds. We have spent a lot of time finding a bed that is very comfortable for us, and the beds in this apartment we’re not comfortable. For some people that doesn’t matter, that was just an important thing for us. I should mention, the bedding in each room was high quality and new.
We can hardly wait to return to the Big Apple in the spring or fall!
You and I did have a conversation about the king bed and, listening to your remarks, I immediately realized the housekeeper had clearly forgotten to "smooth out" or redistributed the down layer covering the firm core mattress. It is similar to sleeping on an eiderdown which has to be shaken out occasionally to redistribute the feathers. We both agreed that beds were a very personal thing and are of a similar mind in having both given away a newly purchased, uncomfortable mattress once we found and bought a more comfortable one. Being an athlete, I can understand why it is especially important for you. We put a lot of time and money into the mattresses we purchased being very aware of how important they are to our guests' comfort. I can appreciate what you are saying since I know how that bed feels when it's not "groomed". This is only the second time that's happened. The housekeeper and I will be more attentive in the future!
The C & A metro station (155th & St. Nicholas) is around the corner. Connects with the B & D one stop away (7 walking blocks - 5 minute walk); the 1 train is 3 blocks distance (W 157th & Broadway). Excellent bus and subway transportation (A,B,C,D,1,9) to both east and west sides and to and from all three airports; Columbus Circle is 11 minutes away and midtown is 20 minutes away via the metro located around the corner. Via metro, JF Kennedy Airport is approx. one hour, Newark approx. 1.5 hours and LaGuardia 1 hour by city bus.
The apartment is located on the norther portion of Manhattan. Midtown is 20 minutes away, downtown and Soho about 30-40 minutes. The subway runs 24 hours and returning late in the evening is a comfortable and safe commute.
