Amazing Summer of Love era house, perched on a cliff overlooking Catskills Mountain range. 40' round great room with a central column bluestone fireplace and dramatic arched beam ceilings are flanked by two wings housing 3 bedrooms and 2 baths.
We are the second owners, and purchased the house from the couple that built it 40+ years ago. All of the wood and stone was milled from and on the property.
Enter this 2100sf ranch house directly into the enormous and dramatic circular Great Room, a yurt/Buckminster Fuller-esque domed space with a 5' diameter bluestone column fireplace at its center. With arched 25' ceilings, wraparound windows, and multiple living areas that flow onto the 950sf deck, the space can accommodate large groups without feeling cramped. Wings on either side house two 20' x 12' bedrooms with post and beam cathedral ceilings (one with king bed and one with queen), and a third 12'x10' bedroom that is set up as a den with flatscreen TV and a desk, and makes a great yoga room. The sofa in the den opens into a very comfortable king-size bed, or two twins. All bedrooms have windowed sliding doors that open onto the deck and provide dramatic mountain views from bed. There's a two-car garage in the basement, and an overhang with cords of hardwood for the fireplace.
The house is lovingly situated about 100 feet above Wittenberg Rd, directly across from Kenneth Wilson State Park. Aside from the one neighboring home, the house is totally secluded, with 1000s of wild acres behind it, and thousands of acres of parkland below it. You can walk to fishing and swimming ponds, nature trails, waterfalls, bike paths, and all other manner of outdoor activities in the summer. Cross-country skiing, ice fishing, hunting, leaf and bird watching and sitting around the fireplace round out the cooler months. Deer, geese, wild turkeys, beavers, bunny rabbits, and (gulp!) bears can all be viewed in their natural habitat safely from the large picture windows.
We have lightly renovated, but kept as much of the fun, funky, freaky details as possible including: white oak floors laid in a circular starburst pattern, original spanish kitchen with brick arch, solid oak cabinetry, and high-end appliances including a counter grill; master bathroom, with photomural wallpaper of the surrounding forests; second bath with 4 showerheads to spray you all over; central vacuum that makes cleaning up a breeze. While decorating is a work in progress (don't want to rush it), it's already a comfortable and inviting home with a chic vintage vibe. The deck is furnished with patio furniture and a small charcoal BBQ.
The property is situated at the farthest reaches of Woodstock, just at the outer-edge of the hamlet of Bearsville. It is 5 miles to the center of town, 2.5 miles to Sunfrost and The Cub markets, 7 miles to Phoenicia, and 20 miles to Bellayre ski resort. By car you can easily eat lunch in Saugerties, Kingston or Rhinebeck, be up in the Catskills for a hike before heading home to BBQ on the patio, and still catch the 8pm movie at Upstate theater in town
Kenneth Wilson Park has its official entrance 1/4 mile down the road for car access, but you can just walk across the street into the woods and be on the nature trails in under 5 minutes. There is a designated fishing pond a few hundred feet from the house, and a much larger boating lake near the main entrance where swimming is also tolerated. Dogs are welcome in the park.
Other landmarks right near the property are the Zen Mountain Monestary, which offers free meditation sessions on Sundays and Wednesdays, Mount Tremper Arts Center for classes and exhibitions, Innertubing down Esopus Creek in Phoencia and Big Deep--Woodstock's famous swimming hole. Great dining in Phoenecia, Woodstock, Saugerties and Kingston, plus hidden dining gems right down the road.
The house is situated up a steep dirt hill, so 4wd is recommended during wet or snowy weather. You will need to drive to do most errands, but the house is surprisingly walk-friendly for all of your outdoor entertainment needs. Biking to town is doable in a leisurely 30min.
We are well situated for grocery shopping, with Sunfrost and The Cub being a few minute drive away. There is also a man who smokes hand-caught fish, keeps beehives, and chickens for eggs, with a store-in-house, less than 2 min. away.
If you look beyond the tie-dye, Woodstock is one of the best towns in the area for everyday needs, with great hardware and drug stores, specialty food shops, tailors, bookstores, music venues, etc... There is a great public golf course and tennis center each 10 min or so from the house.
This was one of the most charming and warm homes that my friends and I have spend time at in the Catskills. The living room and fireplace are stunning; making this home truly unique and memorable. We also loved the choice of decor and furnishings; really creates a special environment . The house was very well stocked with a hotels worth of fresh towels, extra bedding, and fire wood; most owners it seems alway forget about the above. David was quick to answer the phone with any questions and went out of the way to return some personal items that we left by accident. I can't recommend this location enough!
The house was beautiful, just what you would expect of a house in the woods near Woodstock. While beautifully furnished for adults, the kids had lots of fun also. It rained most of our trip so we weren't able to enjoy the back porch, but it looked great! The beds were very comfortable and everything was clean. The kitchen was great and had everything necessary.
We recently stayed at this beautiful home and had a wonderful experience, David the owner was very helpful with tips of the area from shopping for groceries and restaurants to finding the perfect hiking trails. As for the house, could not have asked for more. It is hand made, you could say a collectible of the Catskills, it is very well designed with the two main bedrooms very private and at opposite wings of the house for privacy as well as each having their own bathroom. No matter where you are in the house, inside or on the deck, in the summer time all you see is a canopy of green, really wonderful. I should add that there is a brand new top of the line grill. Will definitely stay here again.
A truly special and unique home and a perfect weekend getaway from NYC. My GF and I spent a weekend at David's home with our small dog and it exceeded already high expectations - the location is perfect (close enough to town that an iced coffee and great breakfast isn't a burden, but removed enough to offer the seclusion we were looking for); the house itself is beautifully appointed and so thoughtfully cared for; and David was the perfect host, attentive and helpful for anything we needed, often even before we asked. Oh and its across the street from a beautiful state park for hiking, swimming, etc! We'll be back again, often and soon.
The house was as pictured, although the deck was really much better than it appeared in the photos. Everything in the house worked well. David was quick to respond to our questions and was very helpful. In true Woodstock fashion, the house was set up for recycling and composting. The one neighbor was friendly. 10 minute walk to Kenneth Wilson for boating and trail hikes. 15 minute drive to Woodstock or Phoenica. We would go back again.
The house work out perfectly for our 2+ week 3-generatio (plus dog) family vacation. It's in the woods up a private driveway off a local road but just a 10-15 minute drive to Woodstock NY, just down the road from a state campground that has some nice hiking and walking trails and a small lake. Woodstock has some great food places (Sunfrost Market and Cafe and Oriole 9 were our favorites, but there are lots of choices for vegetarians, vegans, and omnivores), shopping (small stores, no chains except a CVS and a bank), and concert venues. The layout of the air-conditioned house was perfect for us: a great room surrounding a huge fireplace, a full-equipped kitchen and laundry room, and 2 wings (one with a bedroom and bathroom, the other with two bedrooms and a bathroom), offering lots of space and privacy. The gated deck runs the entire length of the rear of the house, is accessible from the great room and all the bedrooms, and has a gas grill and lots of places to sit, relax, and eat. Because it's gated, our toddler and dog could play without fear of them wandering away from the house. The owner was in contact by text and e-mail (cell phone service was not available, but the house has a landline) and was very helpful in resolving the few minor issues that surfaced. Highly recommended if you're looking for a whole-house rental in the Woodstock area (although Phoenicia and Bellayre are very close by, as are Kingston, Beacon, and other Hudson River locations)!
