Danny and Sherry Rhoten are the proud owners of 2 vacation rentals in Camp Nelson. Danny retired in 1996 from Southern California Edison (SCE) after 30 years of service. A few years later, he started his own company 'Rhoten Technical Services' and has been doing consulting work for the engineering department for SCE almost continually from 1999 until the present. Sherry presently is and has been a Special Education teacher for the Porterville Unified School District for many years. She is the head of a program for pre-school autistic children where she uses her masters degree in Special Education and is a Board Certified Behavioral Analyst. We have 5 grown children and 13 grandchildren. Years ago, when our children were in elementary and high school we hosted over the years 19 foreign exchange students.
When Sherry was 9 years old, she and her family moved from Bakersfield to Camp Nelson where her father, being a building contractor, was hired to build the additions to the Camp Nelson Lodge and build the motel. They liked it so much that they built a new house in Camp Nelson for themselves and stayed on. Sherry grew up here and only left when she left for college.
We moved back to Camp Nelson in 2003 and are very happy to live here permanently.
Cheri L. Vos purchased this cabin in 1999
In the summer, take some relief from the valley floor heat by staying at the newly remodeled 3 bedroom, 2 bath mountain retreat at approximately the 5000' level. Usually about 20 degrees cooler than the valley floor. The bedrooms consist of a Queen sized bed upstairs, a King sized bed in one of the down stairs bedrooms and a bunk bed in the other downstairs bedroom plus 2 futon couches that make into 2 Queen sized very comfortable beds in the living room. Sleeps 10. The downstairs bath room has an old antique claw foot bathtub with a shower. There is also a washer and dryer.
From the 2 spacious decks, enjoy the beautiful view of Slate Mountain. The deck off the living room overlooks the actual Soda Springs. Have a taste. The soda water makes great biscuits, pancakes or waffles or for the adventurous, use the soda water to make Kool-Aid. When the temperature starts to get a little cool, heat is supplied by a wall furnace and for that mountain feeling, a wood burning stove. Relax with your flat screen TV and DVD player after your day of hiking, biking, snowmobiling, boating or sightseeing. Trail of 100 Giants is only a few miles away. The living room deck has a picnic table which seats 8 or 10 with 2 additional chairs at the ends of the table. The deck also has a charcoal BBQ for those great tasting mountain steaks or hamburgers. The dining room has a large dining table and just off the kitchen is a built-in breakfast nook.
Just wanted to let you know that we had an amazing time on our mini vacation! The cabin was perfect and well stocked. We were expecting to get a little snow but not 18 inches. We were all so excited. Our kids and our nieces and nephew have never seen it snow before! The family time and the memories we made are priceless. Please tell the owners thank you for us! He stopped by the first night we were there to drop off the DVD player, which was very kind. Also, Ken the neighbor was very helpful. The first night we borrowed matches and used there phone. Monday morning the kids were out playing in the snow early and Ken and his wife came out and talked for a little bit and let the kids borrow their 2 seated sleds. Later that morning he used his snow blower to clear a path for us to get out which was sooooo very helpful. I would like to send a card to them but i didn't get their address. If you have that could you email it to me? Again, thanks for everything! We will definitely contact you again (hopefully this summer) to rent again.
Camp Nelson is a special place in the Southern Sierra's. Great hiking and sweet little store, bar & cafe. This cabin has such a homey feel! Beds were comfortable, kitchen easy to work in, wonderful outdoor space. Thanks Cheri, we will come back.
