About Susan & Garry Russell. Also see us at sugar-inc.com
We got tired of the Las Vegas scene after 30 years and started taking scuba trips to places all over the world. We discovered that the Big Island, Hawaii had everything we could possibly want in a place to live and to enjoy the ocean. Some of our favorite places to get in the water are right down the street or not too far away. Living in Papa Bay has given us all the privacy we could ever want. Everyone in this location has at least 3 acres of beautiful Hawaiian landscape.

Why Susan & Garry Russell. Also see us at sugar-inc.com chose Milolii
When we have guests, they have all the privacy that we enjoy living here. If our guests are divers or just want to snorkel, I can meet with them in the mornings and take off for different places to explore the ocean. The Volcano National Park is only 63 miles away and one can see how different the landscape is as you travel in any direction. This truly is one of the great areas to visit, away from the usual tourist situations. It's the real Hawaii.
What makes this House unique
We are unique in that we take the time to show you the beautiful water at our area of the Big Island. If you are a scuba diver we know the best places for shore diving. Not only are our tours free, we also supply air and weights at no charge. If you just want to snorkel, we will take you out to many of the same places on snorkel tours. Maybe you would want to come back as a scuba diver!

Great weekend stay
This cute little house is surrounded by wildlife in a rural area. Perfect for a couple divers staying the weekend. Gary was a great host and took us on a 2 tank dive during our stay. It was a little loud at night with the bugs and frogs, but being in the forest we enjoyed it. The only amenity missing was an iron that could have been helpful, but it didn’t take away from the house one bit.
very clean and neat cottage, with super great host and super great dives
Cozy country retreat
Sugar cottage is not the place for everyone, but turned out to be a decent retreat for us. I only say that because it is an approximate 1 hour drive from Kona. However if your goal is to explore the islands this place can make a good home base. It’s only an hour from Kilauea and about 2 hours from Hilo. We were able to see most of the island in 4 days. In addition Garry was very kind and accommodating to give us a great dive to a local shore dive we would have had difficulty finding on our own. The cottage itself is clean. It’s private, and the laundry room was a plus. Cellphone reception is poor, and I would say that’s probably better for a retreat. There are a lot of mosquitoes in this elevation as it is tucked in the rainforest, so bring plenty of Deep Off woods repellent. Overall, I would say this is a good place for adventurous people.
Cannot beat scuba diving with the dolphins.
We love staying at the Sugar Cottage. Gary and Susan are fantastic host, and we have come back many many times. We will come back again next time we are in Hawaii.
Before booking, this place looked too good to be true. A nice, private, clean, spacious house with a guide, tanks, and weights included? It was all true, plus more. We had a great time at the Sugar cottage, went on fabulous shore dives, and totally enjoyed the company of Garry and Susan. Their place is off the tourist track, in a jungle-like residential area. Garry loves what he does, and is a relaxed and experienced diver who ensures that his guests are happy and comfortable. You really could not ask for more if you want to experience nature of the Big island, above and below the sea. We will be back!
Garry is the nicest host. We chose this place because what we really wanted was to explore the waters. I couldn't believe it when I read he offered "Free Scuba and Snorkel Tours." We really wanted to do those things the first time we went to Hawaii three years ago, but only dabbled. Garry will take you diving but you have to be certified already. He recommended a dive instructor for my son to learn from on the island. During our six night stay, Garry took me snorkeling individually (too early for the rest of my family), then he spent a day going out with my 16 year old son and my son's diving instructor Chad (divingbellscuba) to a place Chad was unfamiliar with. After my son was certified (took 3 days) as a PADI diver, Garry took Luke out again for a couple of dives. Luke loved it. There is no way we could have afforded this without Garry's generosity. Where he took us collectively we saw dolphins, turtles, a spotted eagle ray, a big eel and tons of beautiful fish. So fun to be introduced to this rich, peaceful, underwater world.
The house itself was just perfect for the four of us. If when you see five stars you are thinking it will be really "quaint or fancy with fruit or flowers upon arrival", you might be disappointed. I gave 5 stars because of Garry and his gifts. Not only did he take us out, he had boogie boards, chairs, and umbrella and snorkel gear! The cottage is very clean, easy to get to, has everything you need- including a very handy laundry room with loads of towels, and a nice well-screened outdoor room off the bedroom for dining, playing cards, hanging out. We loved the relaxing sound of the frogs at night, (and even recorded it to bring home). You can hear Garry softly practicing his instrument in the distance, which we also loved, being musicians. When my husband got bloody from unexpected coral (we were out on our own that day) Garry came through with hydrogen peroxide, neosporin and bandaids. What I mean to convey is that, whatever came up, he was readily accessible and helpful, and has a very soothing voice/accent. Go! I'm still reeling with relaxation, and hope we can return again: )
