Beautiful apartment building on charming street!

  • 5 of 5

After a long & tiring drive, this apartment was nice to "come home" to. Barbara was prompt, friendly and helpful in making suggestions, answering questions, etc. My husband and I had everything we needed. The bed was comfortable and the apartment was clean and tidy. Barbara left helpful notes around as well, not only to indicate where we could find things in the apartment, but with suggestions for nearby restaurants, things to do, etc. in Coos Bay. She even had fresh eggs and a few other breakfast goodies waiting for us in the fridge! I would definitely opt to stay here again during a visit to Coos Bay. Thank you for your warm hospitality, Barbara!

Perfect cozy place for a weekend getaway!

  • 5 of 5

I came to Coos Bay for a long weekend with my kids. Barbara's one bedroom apartment is clean, charming, and surprisingly more roomy than you would expect an 860-ish square feet of space to be. If you're wanting modern, this may not be a place you are looking for. But if, like me, you love old homes, this apartment is located in a historic building in a great location and will have everything you need for your stay. Barbara also is a very gracious and welcoming host, who leaves sweet touches like fresh baked cookies and farm fresh eggs, as well as little notes throughout her place. She will also check in periodically to make sure you are enjoying your stay. Next time I'm staying in Coos Bay I'll definitely be checking if this place is available to stay at!

Met our expectations!

  • 5 of 5

Barb's little apartment was perfect for our trip! She accommodated our check-in time with our arrival schedule. It was easy to find, was neat and clean, and had everything that we needed. She was quick to respond to emails, and we exchanged phone numbers to facilitate our arrival. Quiet, safe neighborhood. Fresh eggs from her son's ducks and chickens, along with a plate of cookies were especially nice touches. We would definitely stay there again!

Just Right for the Price

  • 5 of 5

The suite was clean and well taken care of. The kitchen was nicely supplied and had everything I could think of in the way of cooking supplies. It is in an older heritage building so if you are looking for "modern" it wouldn't be a fit.. But if you don't mind being in an older building the price is right and the location was perfect. We were able to walk to local restaurants and the grocery store if we wanted to.

Barbara the host was great and responded to my questions through email quickly. I will be returning to the area again in the fall and would gladly rent this suite again.

Just what we needed

  • 4 of 5

This apartment was a perfect location for us, serving as an annex for our group in the Coos Bay Manor B&B. Just a short walk to the State Basketball Tournament at Marshfield and a few doors from our family at the B&B. Owner was very accommodating, available, and prompt in communicating. The apartment was adequate for our group with plenty of room in the kitchen, dining, and patio. Look forward to booking again next year!

Barbara is a great owner; her property, not so much

  • 1 of 5

This is a very old property within walking distance of downtown. Travelers should pass on it if you have issues with:

1. Pet odor and urine stench. Barbara was very nice to have the place fumigated after we arrived.

2. Mold and mildew. Thick green coatings over the window sills. Barbara and Molly tried to paint over them with some success.

3. Lack of ventilation. All the windows except two have been painted shut. The two open about 25%, so there is essentially no fresh air. Tip: prop up a box fan in one of the partial openings. You'll need an extension cord and a pedestal for the fan.

4. No cooking vent. If you cook, don't create vapors which will both smell and set off the fire alarm.

5. The toilet plugs. Barbara has provided a plunger so make sure you know how to use it.

6. Extremely dated/soiled furnishings. The posted pictures are accurate, but reality is very different. Tip: we placed a blanket over the couch and put the greasy armchair in the rear area. The other side tables etc really look like they belong in a yard sale. Barbara has smartly put a placard over one of the chairs warning guests it is unsafe.

7. Spider infestation. Cobwebs are present over most of the rear windows in the house.

On the plus side, the bed was satisfactory and all the appliances functioned and Barbara and her housekeeper were very nice people. We would not book this property again and would not recommend it to anyone else.

Owner's Response: This review is unfair, incorrect and unjustified. Yes, the house was built in 1912--but it has been very well maintained, as have the other homes on the historic street. The guests stayed for 1-1/2 months. To address the concerns presented: 1) The apartment has high quality stain resistant carpet in the living room and bedroom. Although the housekeeper and myself could not smell the pet odor referred to, I immediately scheduled a professional carpet cleaner who used an enzyme treatment to eliminate any residue of pet odor. After that the guests told me the carpets were fine and they didn't smell any more odors. 2. What the guests refer to as thick green mold and mildew on the window seals is not accurate. Through the years the old caulking used the set the historic windows has grown dark. Nonetheless, I went in with the housekeeper Molly and we stripped down the windowsills and painted them. The guests said it was fine after that. 3. The guests should have said two windows are painted shut, now all windows except two. I don't understand it. Both dining room windows open up all the way, which means the lower window covers the upper one. For one of those windows, during the summer months I open it and place a screen in the opening. The bedroom as two windows that open and the living room has one long window that opens. In addition, I keep a standup pedestal fan and extension cords for guest use. We're on the Oregon Coast where a day in the 70s in considered hot, and it always cools down at night. 4. The building is not configured for a cooking vent but there is plenty of air space in the kitchen and previous guests have not had a problem. 5. I was not aware that they had problems with the toilet plugging. Previous guests and guests since have not had this problem that I know of. I keep plungers in all my units. 6. The apartment is furnished in an antique theme. I did not get any of the furniture from a yard sale. The couch is Ethan Allen, and there is not a greasy armchair. The needlepoint antique chair in the bedroom is fragile for sitting on (not unsafe) and I ask guests to use it only for placing things. 7. I have a regular pest control service and the place is not infested with spiders. I jumped to respond on the two things the guests told me about and they said they were happy after that. I can't fix something if I don't know about it. The guests greatly exaggerated and were very unfair and inaccurate in their comments.
