About Brenda Cole

Pratt & Brenda Cole have been married for over 40 years. They live in Salt Lake City, but have had a lifetime of adventure, traveling the world, racing cars, crossing oceans on sailboats, scuba diving, and living life to the fullest. She loves people, gourmet cooking, and entertaining. He is an adrenalin junkie who thrives on fast cars, challenging adventures, and problem solving. We are looking forward to meeting you!

Brenda Cole purchased this house in 2014

Why Brenda Cole chose Puntarenas

When we decided to take our life on the seas and transform them into a land based adventure, we considered all the places we had visited while living on our boats, and while traveling through Mexico and South America. What we loved the first time we, (by chance), drove into Esterillos Oeste, was the quiet & the quaintness of this little fishing/surfing village. It reminded us of what we had always loved in the non-touristy towns we had encountered in our travels. There was a genuineness, and friendliness in the people we encountered. Then when we visited Villa Sirena, and experienced the view, the sounds of the ocean, the everchanging coastline, and the tranquility of the property, we knew our search was over. We had come home.

What makes this house unique

When we had decided Costa Rica would be our home, we spent several weeks pouring over real estate listings and visiting properties from the northern part of the Nicoya Peninsula to the Southern towns of Dominical & Ojochal. There were several homes of interest, but when we began to honestly evaluate the properties, Mermaid View Villas stood out from all the rest for several reasons. (1)The quaintness of the village. (2)The proximity to Jaco and it's prevalence of good restaurants, nightlife, and shopping. (3)The ever-present cool ocean breezes that flow through the house. (4) The closeness to Manuel Antonio, the most visited National Park in Costa Rica. (5) The absolutely spectacular beach within easy walking distance. Walk one direction on the beach and you have beautiful, breaking waves with a steady stream of surfers. Walk the other direction, you have 7 miles of protected coastline where turtles nest, monkeys are in the trees, and brilliant macaws are your walking companions. (6) Delightful, on property, care takers, Desirae & Kealy, who are there to answer questions, solve problems, and make suggestions about where to go and what to see to make your vacation absolutely memorable. (7) Walking through the front door, you are met by the most fantastic view on the planet...the beach, the waves, the tidepools, the statue of La Sirena, and the coastline, all the way to Manuel Antonio!

Spectacular house in an amazing location! I would go back in a minute.

  • 5 of 5

We loved the location because it was close to Jaco but in a smaller village. The setting, design and details of the house are amazing. It is very helpful having the property manager on site so that you can make inquiries about activities, restaurants, etc and the manager can assist with any repairs. We also rented the smaller house for the overflow and this worked well with our group.

Beautiful with many limiting factors

  • 3 of 5

The cottage is cozy and the setting tranquil. However, it is located at the top of a steep hill that makes walking to the beach with any chair, umbrella, cooler, or boogie board impossible. The town is stratified, with the rich gringos living on top of the hills and the locals down on the bottom. There is little mixing. Eating out is limited to one place in town.

The beach is beautiful, and there are tide pools to explore. Forget about swimming or frolicking in the waves. Way too rough and dangerous.

Water in the cottage is a problem. No hot water in the kitchen and bathroom sinks. The shower is either scalding or cold. The drains are sluggish at best.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your feedback. It was a pleasure having both of you stay at Villa Cielo. I had a great time getting to know you and hope that you will be able to find your perfect retirement home here in Costa Rica. I’d like to address that Esterillos Oeste is a beautiful little fishing and surfing village that is quiet and peaceful with a good mix of expatriates and locals. I am sorry you felt that our town was stratified, however, I’ve never seen anything but integration and as a gringa have never felt more at home and welcomed by my friends (Costa Ricans and gringos). Mermaid View Villas is located at the top of a hill about a 5 minute walk to the beach and into town. Having a vehicle is not necessary but it is recommended. It is somewhat of a workout to walk up and down the hill hauling beach things but I wouldn’t say impossible. It is the height of the low season now and sadly there are not as many open businesses as there are throughout the year, however, most prices are much lower for things during these two months. (Right now we have five bar/restaurants open that serve food and beverage all within walking distance to the villa). It is so unfortunate that you did not get to enjoy swimming or frolicking in the waves as it’s one of my favorite things to do here, this is dependent on swell and tide. I sincerely apologize the water in the villa was temperamental during your stay. Sometimes it does take a little while for the water to get hot as it works with an on demand water heating system. Rest assured we have replaced the unit with a brand new one.

Kick Back Comfort

  • 4 of 5

We loved our stay at Villa Cielo. Keeley & Des were delightful & always ready for a

suggestion or chat. We were delighted to meet Brenda & Pratt. they made us feel like part

of the family. Our bungalow was nice and suited the beach vibe of the whole town. Very glad we stayed here.

Thanks for the delightful stay.

Perfect Charming Cottage

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for 3 days, and could not have been happier. The cottage is charming and quaint as is the seaside town. Good security, plumbing, air conditioning and wifi are provided. The cottage is accurately depicted..everything is adorable about it, even the postage stamp sized pool, the owners and caretakers are very friendly and helpful, and our teenage girls were thrilled when the little yorkies visited daily. We rented a car, so we drove to the beach and all over the area. At low tide you can hike out to the mermaid, and if you walk to the right of the mermaid (as Brenda recommended to us) you will encounter completely undeveloped beach, and lots of nature. Although we did not spot any monkeys there, we went to Manuel Antonio one day and there are LOADS of monkeys there on the beach. We highly recommend Karen's restaurant (ask Kealy the name)...we ate there 2 nights and still think it was our favorite restaurant of our trip. There is also a place called Rainmaker where you can hike through the rainforest and across suspension bridges to a waterfall...it's well worth checking out. We will definitely be back and hopefully can bring friends and get the big house! Thank you Kealy and Brenda!

Beautiful place to stay

  • 4 of 5

Overall experience was good, friendly caretakers on property who were more than willing to help out and offer suggestions of places to go and so forth. Home was very comfortable and roomy

My only suggestion to owners would be to update the old TV , remote and DVD player was in a huge pile of a mess in cabinet underneath TV too, not sure if they even worked. Plus no dryer , which is hard to wash clothes, only hang dry

Our One Week Escape!

  • 4 of 5

We really enjoyed our one week stay here; close to a secluded beach, local shop and restaurant. The hosts in the yellow house were amazing and friendly and very accommodating to some of the shortfalls of our stay (which is the only reason why we couldn't 5 star our visit.) The guests who stayed in the blue house immediately before us, really left the home in poor condition and left way behind schedule without any time for the hosts to do a proper review to see all of the items missing and/or damaged (like the hammock they broke.) However, everything worked in regards to super cold AC, electronics, WiFi, plumbing, nice shower, etc. Plenty of room for 3 of us to stay comfortably. Nice to have a super private little pool and a dining table outside where we ate breakfast and listened to the birds.
