About the property

Waterfront 5 BR home With Stunning Water Views with 240 Foot Private Beach

A beautiful open floor plan with magnificent water views from the entire great room; this house is your vacation paradise. It has five bedrooms (comfortably sleeps 12), as well as two full bathrooms and an outdoor shower. The house is located on Shelter Island, a three hour drive from Manhattan, and a short ferry ride from the east end of Long Island.

This unique waterfront home features 240 feet of private beach and stunning sunset views. During the day your private beach is perfect for (and comes with) minnow netting, kayaking (3 provided), sailing (sunfish provided), or just relaxing with a book and watching the boats go by. The bay is tranquil and safe for children, with easy launching of kayaks and the sunfish.

At night the beach is the perfect place to have a bonfire with some friends, or to lie on the beach stargazing. Shelter Island is far enough from the city and light pollution that you can see the Milky Way.

Just a five minute walk down the beach is Town Beach (a public beach with a lifeguard on duty). Ten minutes further is the local clam flats where you can catch yourself some lunch, kayak on smooth water or just enjoy the beautiful aquatic life.

There is a large yard between the house and beach that provides ample space for recreation. For it is suitable for pickup football or soccer and yard games are provided as well (bocce, croquet).

A large deck wraps around two sides of the great room, with a charcoal grill, a table and chairs, as well as lounge chairs for sunbathing. It’s a great place to sit with a cup of coffee in the morning watching the wildlife, or to enjoy the stunning sunsets with a glass of wine in the evening. The deck also has an electric retractable awning providing sun protection during the hottest part of the day.

Entering the house through the 8’ sliding glass doors that line the deck you walk into the great room, with two open areas separated by a dining area with a table that seats 12. One of the common areas includes a large flat screen TV that comes with Apple TV, a DVD player, and the modem (WIFI included). There is also a working brick fireplace (wood supplied) for cooler evenings. The other common area directly faces the water and has an indoor swing, as well as a table that can be used for arts and crafts or board games.

The fully equipped kitchen anchors the great hall and is a great place to cook while enjoying friends, family, and the gorgeous view.

The bedroom wing of the house has a homey charm. It was built in the 1960’s when the grandparents of the family made it their summer retreat. Three of the bedrooms have queen-sized beds, one has a double bed and one has two twin beds (can be set up as bunk beds) as well as a queen-sized bed. A washer, dryer, and dishwasher make cleanup easy, but a cleaning service is available on request.

Between the last week in June and Labor Day the property rents by the week, Saturday to Saturday. The house is professionally cleaned on Saturday, between 10 AM and 3PM, so checkin/checkout are after and before those times. The cost of cleaning varies depending upon how the house is left, and is deducted from the security deposit (generally $175).

The house is located five minutes from the South Ferry from which it is another five to the South Shore of Long Island. Historic Sag Harbor is 25 minutes away, East Hampton’s boutiques 40 minutes away, and ocean beaches to catch some bigger waves are 40 minutes to 1 hours away. You can go to Montauk Point in an hour as well to hike around the park or do some chartered fishing or horseback riding.

On the island itself, you are fifteen minutes away from Shelter Island Heights with its delicious restaurants, charming coffee shops, and quaint stores. On the way you can stop at the organic farm and education center at Sylvester Manor, the original 17th century manor house of the island.

You’re also a ten minute drive from two of the best restaurants in the region (18 Bay and Vine Street Cafe) and a ten minute drive from a reasonably priced 2,500 yard public golf course ($27 for 18 holes). Tennis courts on the Island can be rented by the hour. For the kids, it’s a scenic bike ride (or ten minute drive) to mini golf or one of two ice cream shops.

If you like hiking, then Shelter Island is the place for you. One third of the island is a preserve known as Mashomack Preserve. Owned by the Nature Conservancy, the 2,100 acres shelter a large population of breeding ospreys as well as nesting populations of the endangered piping plover and least tern, as well as a number of rare plants.

Moving north, the North Ferry is a 15 minute drive from your front door. Step off the ferry and wander through Greenport. Do some window shopping, grab a bite to eat, see a movie, and enjoy the delightful North Fork town, a historic center of 19th century whaling. If you’re so inclined, you can head inland and check out the award winning North Fork wine country, specializing in some fine Merlot’s.

All of these delights and more await you in your stunning vacation rental. We’ll be waiting for you on the beach!

About David Nicklin

My parents bought this house in 1956 and it has been a beloved part of our family ever since.

My siblings and I grew up spending every summer at this house, and as we grew up and had families the trend continued on a larger scale.

In 1956 the house needed space for 5 occupants. Half a century later, there nearly thirty children, grandchildren, and spouses who spend time at the house every year.

David Nicklin purchased this house in 1956

Why David Nicklin chose Shorewood

Who wouldn't want a large private beach and huge yard?

In 1956 it was a chance for my parents to buy a house that let them escape the busy city life they led.

This property, between being in a quiet part of the island, and being waterfront, has the benefit of being simultaneously removed from everything, and extremely close to it.

It has the dual benefit of being both private, so you can enjoy time to truly unwind, and also very close to shopping, restaurants, and public beaches so you can enjoy your vacation with family and friends.

What makes this house unique

A large private beach to fish, minnow net, boat, kayak, and generally relax on. Bonfires are recommended.

Beautiful ocean views thanks to the vaulted ceiling of the main hall.

A large wrap-around deck so you can enjoy breakfast (lunch, dinner, and after dinner drinks) outside looking at the gorgeous water views.

Huge yard for recreation (or laying on a blanket outside).

Very private location but also no more than ten minutes away from anything.

The house is lovely, roomy and comfortable in a stunning location. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay!

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our family reunion with our grown children and 3 grandchildren - 2 yr old twins and 6 month old . The great room and huge deck were perfect for our needs. We were fortunate to have a week of spectacular weather and we made full use of the kyaks and Sunfish. The location with the private beach and easy access to Wades Beach was perfect. The Nicklin family were thoughtful in their attention to detail to make our stay so pleasant. We would definitely love to return!

We absolutely loved our time at 9 Heron Lane. We were a group of seven fortysomethings and the house was just perfect for us - we could easily have included a few more. The views are amazing - a gorgeous sunset every night - and we loved having our own private beach and being literally steps away from one of the main public beaches. The house itself is perfect - it feels like an old fashioned vacation home, but with all the modern luxury touches. We loved the big front yard that led to the beach and there's plenty of seating both inside and outside. We loved how small and easy to navigate the island was - nothing was more than a 10 minute drive and it has everything you need. It was perfect for us and we look forward to returning next year!

Wonderful Vacation

  • 5 of 5

We had an exceptional time at this waterfront home. We loved the view from the deck and ate all of our meals there.the new kitchen was easy to use and very spacious. the main room of the house had the views plus plenty of comfy seating for a number of people. The owners could not have been more helpful, as was the house manager. The big lawn was perfect for games and children loved running down to the beach. the house has plenty of space for a large family, but cozy enough for two. We would love to return! Super location

Shelter Island Paradise

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 6 adults - grand-parents and parents of 4 young children-spent 1 week in that beautiful house. Because of the nice weather we were lucky to get, we spent most of the time outside on the very large deck, lawn and private beach.

The house by itself was convenient, the only small minus would be the number of bathroom (2), but because of the outside nice and large shower it has never been a problem.

The owners have been responsive every time we asked them a question and we did not encounter any problem once there.

I would highly recommend that property for families or group of friends.

We might return !

A Great Rental!!!

  • 5 of 5

A wonderful charming home with charm, personality, and beautiful sunsets. Plenty of room, clean, great amenities, great location. Nice open lawn, deck with large table made it easy to have wonderful mini-feasts under the stars. The private beach (with kayaks) were outstanding. The owners were very accommodating and easy to work with. Loved the house, and Shelter Island.

Wonderful Home & Property

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at this wonderful Shelter Island home over the 4th of July with some family and friends and had an incredible time. The massive property over-looking the water is very special, so nice to have such a big lawn and then a private beach, the pictures don't do it justice. Being able to come up off the beach and watch the sunset from the deck is magical. The home is unique, old school cabin charm and the new kitchen renovation beautiful. David and his family were so nice and accommodating before and after our stay. We will return!
