Has promise but several things working against it

  • 3 of 5

The owner has worked hard to update several parts of this house (e.g one of the bathrooms, black out curtains), but other parts show their age (e.g. We didn't use the rusty dishwasher). The house also has plenty of space and the sauna was unique. The larger con in our mind was the smell in the house. I couldn't quite place it, but I think it is just the smell of an old house. Some people may not mind it, but we wouldn't return.

Great place, great value

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here one Thanksgiving. Was perfect for a family. Large enough to be comfortable, plus the upstairs is nicely separated from the downstairs, thereby allowing the adults some quality conversation time downstairs while the kids played upstairs. The kitchen opens to the dining room table, which is good for entertaining. We had three families there for Thanksgiving dinner and it was really enjoyable. There are some nice Alaska flairs to the decor throughout the place.

Place is located on quiet side street in a strictly residential area - no condos or businesses, which was nice. .

Okay, definitely not great

  • 2 of 5

We rented this house because it was close to the Crow Creek Mine where our daughter was having her wedding. It was great on location in regards to the proximity to the mine. It was clean and well stocked. We had looked at other places to fit our group size, but struggled with having people commit, so when we finally had the number of people we had to accommodate there were very few houses available to rent, so we scrambled to lock in a place. July is the height of travel season which presented few options besides staying at the very expensive Alyeska Resort. Quickly looking over the available homes we scanned pictures and tried to make what was available work. I really should have compared the written description against the pictures in the listing because one of the bedrooms is pictured twice with a different comforter on the bed. After we arrived I kept walking around trying to find the other bedroom that was pictured. I felt a bit deceived. There were 2 roll aways that we put together in the living room for my brother and sister in law. We made it work, but after telling them they would have a room of their own it was unfortunate that they didn't. Also, not really being familiar with the weather at this time of year, I looked on the internet to see what the avg. temperatures were. Coming from the East coast the temps looked good, not to hot and not to cool. Upon arrival it was quickly discovered that it was a good deal warmer outside than expected and the house didn't have Central Air. Which is survivable, not the end of the world. So we started opening windows because there was a really nice breeze outside, except there were no screens in almost all of the windows. two very little windows on the top floor had screens and one window by the kitchen sink. We of course opened those, but neither of the sliding doors had screen doors either. After about 5 minutes it became very clear that the windows could not remain open, so many bugs were flying in it was crazy. I started looking around for some fans, i didn't remember seeing any while I was hunting or the other bedroom, so I didn't hold out much hope. I txt Erika and she said there was a fan behind where the TV was located. Wasn't there. On my 2nd time looking around I found it in a closet down stairs and it was the smallest fan I've ever seen. We bought fans while we were in Anchorage, otherwise the bedroom upstairs would have been unbearable to sleep in. We were disappointed with the house.

Owner's Response: Hi Kelly, I am really very sorry that the house disappointed. I will review my VRBO page to make sure that the house is clearly advertised as it is: a 3 bedroom house. I really appreciate your constructive criticism and will make sure that we have more fans available for future guests. This is a great idea from you and an oversight on my part. We don't usually have such warm weather and those south facing widows do let in a lot of sun!

Great time in Girdwood!

  • 4 of 5

This house was clean, comfortable and in an awesome location! Easy walk to Jack Sprat, the Sitzmark or Chair 5 and to the Virgin Creek Trail. Kitchen is huge and great for cooking a big family style meal. Dishwasher was a bonus. Owner communicated clearly and was in good contact ahead of our visit.

Absolutely recommend this place.

A delightful time

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in late July 2015 and had a great time. The property was great- clean, spacious, and suited our family of 5 well. There are two decks on the place and the front deck had a good view of the mountains. The chateau itself is in a quiet residential neighborhood fairly close to the ski resort (5-10 minute drive easily). The beds were very comfortable, and we even made popcorn and played cards upstairs. Erika was very helpful and responsive.

Hiking the alyeska glacier was awesome, and Girdwoods wildlife center is definitely worth visiting.
