About Larry and Kathy Christensen

My wife, Kathy, is from Moab and we always planned to return to this area when we retired. We lived in the Provo Utah area for 20 years, and while living there purchased our property in La Sal in May of 2005 for cabin property. After spending several years retreating from the city to this beautiful quiet place, we decided to retire in La Sal, rather than in Moab. When we purchased the property, the purchase also included a 3 bedroom mobile home. We spent several months fixing it up, furnishing it, and stocking it with everything we could think of to accommodate us when we came to stay. We used it for our cabin for 7 years, and actually lived in it when we sold our home in Provo area, and was in the process of building our home that we now live in next door to the trailer. After moving into our home here, we have had many people tell us we should rent our trailer out to vacationers, that it was the perfect get-away from the city, and with all the furnishings, was the perfect cabin setting. Thus, we found out about VRBO, and listed it a couple months ago.

I am an artist with an MFA, have taught at BYU and UVSU, and have taught private lessons as well. I currently am part of a Gallery in Moab that is operated by 20 local artists, and I sell my work there and out of our home. My wife, Kathy, retired from a long career with the Forest Serviced, starting on the Manti-La Sal N.F. in Moab, and retiring as a Budget Analyst on the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache N.F. located in the Provo/Salt Lake area in March 2013. I am retired from teaching at Universities, but continue to paint and market my art. Kathy and I dreamed of moving here, and every time we drive home from a few days in the city shopping and visiting family, we feel excited all over again to be able to live in this area and LOVE coming home!

Larry and Kathy Christensen purchased this mobile home in 2005

Why Larry and Kathy Christensen chose La Sal

We purchased this property because it was close to my wife's home town of Moab, and we loved that it was close enough to Moab to drive in for restaurants, shopping, and local events, yet far enough away to be peaceful. After using it for cabin property for so many years, we fell in love with it, and decided to build our home next door to the mobile home we used as our cabin. The property is located at the base of the La Sal Mountains, neighbors are at least 1 acre apart, and most places more than that. We are surrounded by the Manti La Sal N.F., which offers hiking, biking, hunting, fishing, 4-wheeling, snowmobiling, camping, and site seeing and relaxing. It also offers the beauty of the desert settings in all directions, some of which include Arches National Park, Canyonlands NP, and several others. Being an artist, and with Kathy having worked for the Forest Service, we are delighted with such diverse beauty, all within a reasonable one day drive. Right out the front door of the mobile home, you can be on a mountain road heading to one of the many lakes, or just to site see. Yet the mobile home provides all the comforts of home, including fully stocked kitchen, 3 bedrooms and a washer and dryer. You're in the mountains, but when you are wanting to rest and kick back, you have all the comforts of home. Also, it's only 35 miles southeast of Moab, so it's close enough to drive in and enjoy all that Moab offers, but far enough out to enjoy the peaceful mountain setting. We have loved it here for 9 years, and are excited to be living here full time now! We are here to help our visitors get familiar with the area and recreation options, and are excited to share and area we have fallen in love with!!!

What makes this mobile home unique

We are located at the base of the La Sal Mountains 35 miles SE of Moab Utah. What is so amazingly unique about this whole area is that you can be in the desert in the morning, and in the mountains 15 minutes later. In the winter months, a person can cross ski in the La Sal Mountains, and drive into Moab the same day and Golf at the beautiful 18 hole golf course there, shop, have dinner, or participate in the any one of the year round events hosted there. From this area, you can see multiple National Parks and National Forest lands. The recreational opportunities are so diverse, people of all ages can enjoy the area, from Extreme Sports Activities to just relaxing and site seeing. Another unique benefit is the archeological findings that include multiple ruins and petroglyphs, and more. Another activity people come from all over the world to participate in is the river rafting. There are multiple companies in Moab that guide raft trips down the Colorado River. This area is so diverse, the recreational opportunities are endless!!!

Our property is located at the base of the La Sal Mountains, 35 miles SE of Moab. We used this as our family cabin for 7 years, while we lived in the SLC/Provo area. We came here as often as we possibly could because it provided a peace we didn't experience in the city. The rural setting, clean air, and diverse recreation opportunities are wonderful! Being so close to Moab, you can take advantage of any variety of year round events there, and when you're done for the day, retreat to this serene peaceful setting. Cozy retreat

  • 5 of 5

This was our second stay at Rustic Get-Away & it was as cozy & welcoming as we remembered. We love how quiet it is & the 2 year old in our group was enchanted by the deer that ambled through the yard every day we were there. Kathy & Larry continue to anticipate every need from popcorn to accompany the large collection of movies to a highchair & toys for the baby. They are the best hosts we have ever encountered & we are already planning next year's trip!

Great Location

  • 4 of 5

Rustic Getaway is in the LaSal Mountains perfectly located between Arches NP and the southern entry to Canyonlands NP. The La Sal Mountains are beautiful as well. If you want to explore this part of Utah then this place is for you. It's not a 4 star hotel but it is a clean cozy place to rest your head between adventures.

Peaceful and relaxing

  • 5 of 5

After traveling and hiking the southwest for 2 weeks, my three daughters were exhausted and homesick. This rustic get away was exactly what we needed before beginning our journey home. We spent our 2 days reading on the screened in porch looking at the gorgeous mountain views, playing card games, and teaching the girls checkers. The kitchen had everything we needed to cook breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Everything was clean, well stocked, and perfectly peaceful. We all consider it one of the best parts of our trip.

Great little place

  • 5 of 5

Larry and Kathy were extremely hospitable. The place was clean, warm and lit upon arrival (it was after dark and ~9*F when we arrived - December/January timeframe daytime highs about 35*F and lows around 10*F). There was a wonderful plate of lemon cake on the table which we consumed almost immediately. This is a 3 bedroom 1 bathroom single wide mobile that has everything you think you'd need. We were planning on roughing it, but that was not necessary. The interior is decorated with many of Larry's wonderful original paintings and many other knick knacks. There was a fully stocked wood pile on the porch ready to keep the place warm as well as electric heaters inside to take off the edge prior to establishing a well burning fire. There's plates, pots, pans, bowls, flatware, crock pots, huge pots, meat loaf pans, coffee maker, kettle, soap, towels, linens, pillows....everything you might use and some. We spent most of our days exploring the snow covered hills around the property.....and what a gorgeous area it is. Larry and Kathy checked in occasionally (maybe 2x via phone in 7days) to ensure all was well, but for the most part left us to ourselves (which says a lot being they live right next door). When we thought we may need a snow machine to get into a really remote area, Larry even made some calls for us to aid in renting one as well as offered up some additional wilderness type hiking areas to check out in the area. If we're lucky enough to make it back we'll definitely be looking up this great couple. The La Sal store in town was a beautiful little store, but didn't open until 11am (so be prepared prior to arrival for that). There is very affordable gas (no diesel) there as well, but only available when the store is open. We had a great time and were very comfortable. I almost fell asleep on the couches with the roar of the fire and a movie playing on the TV more than once after long days of hiking the hills. Thanks again Larry and Kathy. All the best wishes to you and hopefully we can be in touch in the near the future.
